It should make us hopeful !! Lockdown will definitely be eased and life could go back a bit to normal !

Oh, I can believe much reduced or significantly lower and definitely moving in the right direction. What I can't believe is eliminated in London by the end of the month. Little old Bedford had 31 new confirmed cases in 24 hours announced on Monday and a hell of a lot of people from there commute into London.

StCharlotte · 15/05/2020 10:09

Sure. See also "the cheque is in the post", "I'm from Head Office, I'm here to help you" and "we are going to get great free trade deals".

You forgot "I promise I won't come in your mouth".

Quartz2208 · 15/05/2020 10:11

I have to say I think it is easy to assume that Daily Mail etc can give headlines which are over exaggerated but having looked into it and it comes from the Medical Research Council and is data that SAGE are looking at why everyone seems to think of it as untrue.

Commuting into London is the problem they are going to have to sort but the spread of the virus does show it is very much slowing and London is ready for contact tracing

chomalungma · 15/05/2020 10:11

Some people on here don’t seem to understand how herd immunity works

Oh, I do. It depends on how many people have had it - as you have pointed out. Thanks for scienceplaining though...

Herd immunity works well at much higher levels of previous infection though. 25% infection rates isn't that high.

I would be concerned about too much easing of restrictions - London is a place that is very crowded and is an easy place for a flare up to rise again.

Bleepbloopblarp · 15/05/2020 10:31

Thanks for scienceplaining though...

You’re welcome!

sonjadog · 15/05/2020 10:35

I can believe it for London. Follows the pattern in other countries. I don't think an easing of lockdown will necessarily mean the virus gets out of control either. Again, in other countries this hasn't happened. There are small areas of outbreak, but not the mass of infections that some posters seem to think inevitable.

frazzledasarock · 15/05/2020 10:36

Sure I’ll beleive that if the politicians go back to sit in parliament.

So far it’s only the plebs in over crowded tubes and buses, the congestion charge in London has been reintroduced at a higher rate and parking restrictions and road restrictions are in place so people can’t drive into London even if they wanted to.

Meanwhile in China there’s a second wave starting.

woodlandwalker · 15/05/2020 10:40

Every day I look at the BBC number of cases for my borough and neighbouring boroughs in London. The figures are huge and still rising. Now more people are returning to work and crowding onto public transport it will get much worse. How can London be virus free in a month?

LangClegsInSpace · 15/05/2020 10:40

Meanwhile in China there’s a second wave starting.

No there's not. There are small isolated outbreaks but they have highly effective containment strategies in place so they don't take off.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 15/05/2020 10:45

God, I read some amount of bullshit on here!! 🤪😀😀😀😀😀

jaguar67 · 15/05/2020 10:50

What a lot of unnecessarily snarky comments on here!

OP isn't repeating Karen off Facebook, this is based on a study from University of Manchester and features in a number of broadsheets today. Personally I think we'll be living with this virus for a long, long time to come, but if it's managed to a point where we can resume more normal lives (and continuing to protect the vulnerable of course), what's not to feel some relief about?

I get your post completely OP, it's about recognising there's a glimmer of light at the end of a very dark tunnel. I like your spirit x

Frazzled2207 · 15/05/2020 10:51

If we’re lucky it might get down to very low levels of transmission but I honestly don’t think virus free is going to be possible for a very long time.

frazzledasarock · 15/05/2020 10:53

Two cities in China have gone back into lockdown.

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/05/2020 10:55

You know what? You’re right. We’re all doomed. Let’s stop trying to see any positives in any situation and just concentrate on the bad stuff that’s going to happen to us.

AlternativePerspective · 15/05/2020 10:56

Well, low levels are enough, surely?

Reality is that we’re never likely to be virus free, just as much as flu, the common cold, norrovirus etc are always around, but we have to hope that we return to a point where the world isn’t in permanent lockdown because that just isn’t sustainable.

And people keep mentioning second waves but actually those are small outbreaks, but obviously because of how things spiralled last time there is always the anxiety over a second wave. I believe Germany is the only country which has more concerns as their R level is back above 1,as is Spain IIRC, but only time will tell.

Oaktree55 · 15/05/2020 10:59

How can people believe this when countries like Singapore who had it virtually under control have big flare ups again leading to lock down there. It is just wishful thinking and misleading leading people to relax behaviour. It is simple biology and maths as to how this virus spreads and spread fast it will again given half a chance which in the UK we seem to be doing!

itsaweddingone · 15/05/2020 11:01

@Oaktree55 then what do we do?

Stay at locked down until there is (or might never be) a vaccine?

Or just accept it will spread.

Bollss · 15/05/2020 11:01

oaktree you do realise this was an actual study and not just hearsay? Or do you know better than them?

viques · 15/05/2020 11:07

People flying in?

Last few morning I have been woken by planes flying over (London) at 5.00 in the morning. Haven't had that for about six weeks so I reckon the airports will be back in business pretty soon. Shame, I've got used to clear skies with no vapour trail, today's sky is amazing, clear blue, teeny tiny fluffy clouds and no cross cross.

oldiewelshie · 15/05/2020 11:08

Maybe we can all be just a little bit cautiously hopeful that things are starting to improve. Sorry you are getting such a bashing OP.

oldiewelshie · 15/05/2020 11:09

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe what is bullshit?

Selfsettling3 · 15/05/2020 11:11

No because I live in the North East and our R number is much higher. I think we need to be in lock down for longer.

thenightsky · 15/05/2020 11:15

You know what? You’re right. We’re all doomed. Let’s stop trying to see any positives in any situation and just concentrate on the bad stuff that’s going to happen to us.

It certainly feels as though some people would prefer that Sad

Oaktree55 · 15/05/2020 11:15

What we are meant to do as other countries have done is follow World Health Organization guidelines ie have track and trace set up before easing lockdown. We have not done this. Crucial error.

Bollss · 15/05/2020 11:15

@selfsettling3 it's 0.8 isn't it? Still below 1.
