To think farrow and ball isn't the best paint? What's the best

cultkid · 14/05/2020 10:35

I have used them for years but recently feel that their paints haven't had a truly through through pigment
I use their more hard wearing paint but haven't been amazed

I want a dusty old fashioned pink bedroom and want to paint it

Any tips?

Or is farrow and ball the best?

A vote for little Greene here. We only use this now as it is so hard wearing

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/05/2020 11:57

I have only painted with F&B once and it was truly awful.

It was like painting with milk.

I was told if you want the F&B finish but don’t want to spend a fortune.
Get a colour match. Paint the room then paint a coat of F&B over the top.

Mostly I use Matt white dulux trade everywhere.

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 15/05/2020 12:08

I use Crown Trade or Johnstones Trade paint now. Have used all sorts over the years- F&B, Little Greene, Fired Earth. I prefer the Crown Trade for the range of colours and for woodwork. It was a decorator who told me to stop wasting my money. He wasn't wrong.

Mmc224 · 15/05/2020 12:12

Johnstone trade paint rather than off the shelf. The stuff in bnq from dulux and Johnstone is retail paint, not the same quality or price as the stuff decorators use. We normally go to the trade outlet to buy and coverage and colour is much better with the trade paint.

@Rebelwithallthecause

Lovely thanks. I didn't realise they did paint (guess I'll have to wait to check it out though..Sad)

Rebelwithallthecause · 15/05/2020 12:49

They are open. You can choose colours on their website and order samples too if needed.

It’s a nice shop to go to when open (not too sure if they are only open for paint or not) as they have a bit of a treasure trove of unusual items for sale

mooching · 15/05/2020 14:17

Paint library is good

justonecottonpickingminute · 15/05/2020 16:56

I love working with F&B personally.

tilder · 15/05/2020 19:08

Another vote for Earthborn. Beautiful paint. Thick, creamy and absolutely no paint smell. Covers everything. Washes. Ultra matt. Plus completely breathable so perfect for an old house. Been really pleased even 5 years on. Still renovating and still using it!

F&B were useless when I asked if their paints were breathable. Plus more expensive than the clay paint.

TheSheepofWallSt · 15/05/2020 19:16

Just started decorating the house I’ve been in for 3 years Blush and bought Earthborn for rooms I’m actually “doing” and a cheapy for the hallways that I just want to freshen until they can be done properly later in the year.
The Earthborn paint is amazing; even my shit decorating capacity is improved by it.

doorbellringer · 15/05/2020 19:24

Another vote for Johnstone’s trade paint. Always vinyl silk. Bombproof. I have a beautiful dusky rose in my bedroom. Makes me happy every time I walk in there.

LakieLady · 15/05/2020 21:48

Crown's unfortunately named "Period Collection" does that thing of changing colour with the light. We've got Flagon (soft green that looks greyish in direct sun) in our hall and it has worn really well.

ITonyah · 16/05/2020 13:47

So if i have damp round my windows would the clay based paint be better??

uniquehornsonly · 16/05/2020 16:15

ITonyah It depends on the source of damp. If it's the kind of damp you get in old properties with in insulated walls, then yes - clay paint is great if painted directly onto plaster so the wall can "breathe". Don't paint it on top of old vinyl paint because then it can't breathe. Some blurb here: earthbornpaints.co.uk/paint-for-damp-walls-and-ceilings/

But if it's damp from a leaky gutter or poor ventilation in a modern build, then the paint won't help that much the problem would still need fixing before painting.

uniquehornsonly · 16/05/2020 16:15

*uninsulated walls

ITonyah · 16/05/2020 17:18

Its an old house. Sounds good!

Shortfeet · 17/05/2020 09:38

I love a mumsnet paint thread . Everyone has such strong opinions.

I love valspar and converted the local professional painter when I provided some for a room he did in my house.

MrsKoala · 17/05/2020 22:11

Those of you who rate Valspar are your colours quite light shades? Did you paint it straight onto freshly plastered walls?

artyandtarty · 18/05/2020 07:38

I used a mid grey throughout all of my house. We had walls plastered, I sealed those with an emulsion & water mixture before putting 2 coats of Valspar on.

artyandtarty · 18/05/2020 07:40

The Valspar paint I used does that nice light reflection when the sun shines on it.... it's kind of like a soft light reflection that looks very pretty.

crispysausagerolls · 18/05/2020 07:50

Agree with everyone saying Johnstone’s. Impossible to tell the difference

FoolsAssassin · 18/05/2020 07:55

Johnstone’s here but have used Benjamin Moore Aura on woodwork which has gone very well.

bellsbuss · 18/05/2020 08:04

Another one for Little Greene.

Glitterbubbles · 18/05/2020 08:18

Our entire house is painted in Valspar ranging from pastels to very dark and we've been really happy with it.

CherryStoneTree · 18/05/2020 08:38

Little greene all the way here
