To think farrow and ball isn't the best paint? What's the best

cultkid · 14/05/2020 10:35

I have used them for years but recently feel that their paints haven't had a truly through through pigment
I use their more hard wearing paint but haven't been amazed

I want a dusty old fashioned pink bedroom and want to paint it

Any tips?

Or is farrow and ball the best?

I love Farrow and Ball. Peignoir and Elephants Breath my very favourite colours. Will definitely look at the other recommendations here too. Benjamin Moore is great also.

Casino218 · 14/05/2020 15:23

My elands is one of the high end paints. I get that when I can afford it.

MaggieAndHopey · 14/05/2020 15:33

Little Greene all the way. Goes on beautifully, doesn't smell, is very pigmented so a little goes a long way, and the type I bought (intelligent matt I think it's called) is wipe clean. I'm on a budget but when we moved house and I wanted to redecorate, I splurged on LG for all the rooms and I am so glad I did.

lakeswimmer · 14/05/2020 15:52

Hi OP - I see you've already ordered - I hope it works out!

I came on this thread to say Little Greene or Mylands too - both are excellent. I'm re-painting my bedroom at the weekend with LG and the quality of Mylands marble matt emulsion is fantastic.

Rebelwithallthecause · 14/05/2020 16:09

Way to go @cultkid must come back and update once the painting is done

SorryImNotCreative · 14/05/2020 16:14

We always get our local Johnstone’s to colour match any paint we want. They were recommended by our decorator and their paint is very good quality.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 14/05/2020 16:16

Agree with the F&B fans. My whole house is painted in F&B dead flat emulsion/eggshell woodwork paint. I did it myself, and my experience is that it needs 2-3 coats. I've also had it colour-matched for rental properties, and while it looks almost like the real thing, it doesn't change colour in the light in the same way that the real stuff does.

I used some B&Q white emulsion in a rental property on a ceiling. It took about 25 coats, and still looked patchy. And that was just painting over an existing white ceiling. I commented to a B&Q staff member that it hadn't been very good (when I went in to buy something else), and she said: "yes, it's crap".

junecat · 14/05/2020 17:13

I always go to Johnstone's and get it mixed there

averythinline · 14/05/2020 21:52

I prefer f&b colour matched at Johnson paint shop and it doesn't have the depth... but was much more practical.. although wouldn't do it again that was cooking apple..
Liked Valspar eggshell but the emulsion was dreadful...

Little greene can do tones think they have a good pink Dorchester???

CaliforniaMountainSnake · 14/05/2020 21:56

My decorator uses the farrow and ball colours but has that mix up in trade quality dulux.

NotMeNoNo · 14/05/2020 22:01

I really like Dulux Trade paints ( in various colour ranges) not as thick and jelly like as DIY range. I also like Little Greene, haven't used F&B for ages but we did a whole house in it once. I dont like Valspar or own brands. I would recommend trade suppliers like Brewers, they have the decent brands and all the nice brushes etc too.

Suze1621 · 14/05/2020 22:51

Another vote for Johnstones, their colour matching is excellent and very pleased with the quality and price of the paint. Recommended to me after disappointing results with F&B

smileyfacestar · 14/05/2020 22:57

Colour courage is great. We've used it in most of the house.

RosesandIris · 14/05/2020 23:04

Decorators hate it and say it’s poor quality. We had an existing paint colour matched and it was just as good.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 14/05/2020 23:06

You’d bought it already! However...

I agree that for real subtlety you have to use f and b and suck up the disadvantages. Came on here to say I’m a fan of Little Greene.

Athenajm80 · 14/05/2020 23:37

I've just decorated a room with Craig & Rose paint. It's not far off F&B price but it went on well and looks amazing. Like people have said about F&B, the colour changes when the light does. This is the second room I've used Craig and Rose paint and it is very hard wearing.
I did buy it mainly cause I fell in love with their French Turquoise and couldn't find anyone else doing the same colour (similar ones but not quite). Also they were the only ones I could get delivered.

Edwardbear1 · 14/05/2020 23:45

Decoratingcentreonline.co.uk

They colour match anything in leyland trade, which is amazing quality paint in lots of finishes.

I’ve used F&B, little greene etcetc
Really recommend DConline. Also very helpful family run business :)

Calamine and calling are both lovely.

SecondaryBurnzzz · 15/05/2020 00:00

I have a huge selection of paint cards as want to paint our 1910 house too. The Mylands colour card arrived today and I really like them. Some lovely soft dusky pinks. The Hellebore you linked to is gorgeous.

We have recently moved in so painted everything white, Dulux matt and rollers. So many coats! Then I bought some paint pads, and they were amazing! you get a really good thick coverage and it they are precise too. No splattering. Not expensive so have go and see what you think.

dibble15 · 15/05/2020 06:12

@marylou2 I was going to ask about Benjamin Moore as they have some great colours.

My house is LG & Mylands.

ZaraW · 15/05/2020 06:20

Which? tested paints last year as far as I remember F&B were at the bottom of the rankings.

Toomanycats99 · 15/05/2020 06:35

I use little greene eggshell first woodwork.

Pricey but lovely to paint with. I recently had some work done and the guy doing painting was also really impressed with it.

itchyfinger · 15/05/2020 06:36

Mylands, its amazing. Really thick (unlike crappy F&B)

ferretface · 15/05/2020 07:30

Little Greene is amazing paint! Fab coverage, low VOC, hard-wearing, can even be cleaned without damaging the matte finish or leaving stains :)

DifficultLemonDifficult · 15/05/2020 07:33

Mylands, hands down. Beautiful colours with a high pigment content. Very durable too.
