To think farrow and ball isn't the best paint? What's the best

I have used them for years but recently feel that their paints haven't had a truly through through pigment
I use their more hard wearing paint but haven't been amazed

I want a dusty old fashioned pink bedroom and want to paint it

Any tips?

Or is farrow and ball the best?

I mainly used Albany from Brewer's, the store mix up the colours required for each paint anyway so can do a colour match. It covered really well & the store assistants are fantastic for advice. www.brewers.co.uk/products/paints/paint-for-walls-ceilings

I love Little Greene paint. Have a very beautiful dark blue (Hicks Blue) in our living room, and it was very easy to apply.

I switched from F&B due to a decorator recommending LG and won’t go back.

LakieLady · 14/05/2020 12:17

Johnstone’s do a hard wearing wall paint, scrubbable and match the F&B colours exactly. It’s brilliant

Every decorator I know swears by Johnstones and their colour matching, as does my builder/property developer BIL. I saw a refurb he was doing for a client and the Stiffkey Blue colour matched was indistinguishable from F&B. I happened to have an F&B colour chart in the car, and checked!

Much cheaper than F&B, too.

EdwardBulmer does some beautiful heritage shades of dusty pink. Completely free of VOCs

Little greene peach blossom might be a good one to look at

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 14/05/2020 12:26

Colour matching is not the same. We use F&B colour matched paints at work - they are nice, but they don’t change with the light in the same way, as pp said. You can tell the difference.

This is what I wanted to say. Matching is not the same.

em90792 · 14/05/2020 12:27

Bunny says avoid farrow and ball, its shocking and overpriced! (He does maintenance/painting/building etc) he raves about johnstones. Xx

em90792 · 14/05/2020 12:27

*hubby not bunny 😂🙈

AnnaNimmity · 14/05/2020 12:29

I like the depth of colour of F&B too. really big range and I like how it changes colour depending on the light. I have found 2 coats (plus undercoat) to be enough in my house.

I haven't tried Little Greene though.

OP, I have F&B sulking room pink in my bedroom and love it.

TeaAndHobnob · 14/05/2020 12:39

I have a really bright blue (a bit like the deep Mumsnet colour on the app) painted on 3 walls over white and it only needed one coat!

I have the same colour I think - ultrablue? Painted my bedroom with it. It looks fantastic.

We've used Little Greene paint a couple of times now and the finish is lovely.

Lndnmummy · 14/05/2020 12:41

Little green

BetteDavisWeLuvU · 14/05/2020 12:42

Shit name, but Lakeland Feng Sui paint, hands down amazing - they have pretty much all the F&B and Little green colours on file as well.

Pythone · 14/05/2020 12:42

Little Greene is good, but recently I've used a couple of colours (Bleu Paon and Jaune Calisson) from Liberon's casein-based Velours de Peinture range and the paint is fantastic - great pigmentation and goes on like a dream. I'm not sure how easy it is to get in the UK (I'm in France at the moment) but if it is available, I would recommend it. Seriously considering stocking up on some for when I return to the UK... I wonder if paint goes off?

Lndnmummy · 14/05/2020 12:43

We decorated 3 years ago and now have a toddler. The amount of times I have scrubbed our little green paint is way more than I could count. Looks brand new still. The farrow and ball by comparison has needed a repaint. I’d never use them again

MogHog · 14/05/2020 12:47

I swear by Johnstones trade paint. As said before the colour matches are second to non in fact they made up a Dulux colour better than a Dulux mix station did (have to say when I pointed this out to Dulux on twitter they send me a voucher for 2x massive tins of their trade Diamond matt in whatever colour I wanted )
I use the paint centres all the time now, the paint is hard wearing and goes on lovely.

QueenOfToast · 14/05/2020 12:48

I used this F&B colour to paint my sitting room last summer. It definitely needed 2 coats to get it looking good but I am very happy with it. DH and I did the decorating ourselves and he didn't moan about the paint quality or ease of application which is something I have heard professional decorators moan about in the past.

Earthborn claypaint is absolutely wonderful to work with. Covers beautifully in one coat and is breathable and good for the planet. Not the cheapest but far superior to F&B. They do a nice pink called Rosie Posie. F&B do have nice colours but their coverage is pants, so not worth the money in my opinion.

Winterwoollies · 14/05/2020 12:51

Dulux will colour match F&B. It’s hard-wearing, substantial and doesn’t need 42 coats.

ITonyah · 14/05/2020 12:53

QueenOfToast we used that in kids bathroom. Gorgeous colour

catwithflowers · 14/05/2020 12:54

We always go to our local independent paint shop and the guy there can mix any of the expensive paints from Little Green, Farrow and Ball etc He uses Johnstone’s Trade and we have always had excellent results. All our family do the same now. Less than half the price and better to paint with (I have tried genuine F&B and didn’t rate it at all even though I love their colour palette)

Peonyinbloom · 14/05/2020 12:55

We use an interior designer for any house updates as I have zero ability to decide and know what to use.
He always uses Zoffany, and it is lovely. The painter/decorator said it was the nicest paint they had ever used, they were very impressed.

Tellmetruth4 · 14/05/2020 12:57

Little Green

HappenstanceMarmite · 14/05/2020 12:58

I was a F&B fan. Now a Frenchic convert. You want Dusky Blush in the Alfresco range. Can use it on any surface with no need for a primer. Goes on a dream. Here is a shelf and patio chairs done in Dusky Blush

How am I the only person who doesn't like Little Greene? It is the worst paint I have ever used!

I've done one room in it and am considering covering it up and starting again.

Ii was impossible to paint with - streaks left everywhere, can see where I cut in with brush vs. used a roller. Very poor coverage, took three coats vs. one/two with other brands, and could still do with another coat - but I'm not splashing out for yet another tin. Couple of places that needed a touch up (bashed ladder into wall) - the cover up sticks out like a sore thumb, whereas all other brands has been invisible.

Hate it!

Found F&B quite nice to work with and lovely shades - pigmentation very high, at least in the shades I've used. Favourite is Zoffany though - like painting with velvet.

bravotango · 14/05/2020 13:16

Ooh I want to place a vote for ColourCourage! We LOVE it - much better coverage and durability than any others. Cheap to boot!

Marsh Mellow is our dusky pink choice for our spare room.
