To think farrow and ball isn't the best paint? What's the best

I have used them for years but recently feel that their paints haven't had a truly through through pigment
I use their more hard wearing paint but haven't been amazed

I want a dusty old fashioned pink bedroom and want to paint it

Any tips?

Or is farrow and ball the best?

Another vote for Little Greene Paint. We invested in LG for our living room and F&B for our bedroom. The living room is perfect, colour has beautiful depth and it doesn't chip, mark etc. We had a lot of damage when a log burner was fitted and it patched up beautifully and was great to paint with. The F&B chipped on day 1 and was a nightmare to work with. I love their colours but I wouldn't bother again.

This makes me laugh when I think of farrow and ball

F&B lovely colours but awful paint. Takes way too many coats IMO. Treated myself because love the shades but was horrified by the quality. Will never use it again. Earthborn clay paint all the time for us now. Easy to use. No horrid smell. Lovely finish.

Buttybach that’s hilarious Grin

Msmcc1212 · 15/05/2020 08:05

Forgot to say that Earthborn changes colour in the light too. 😁

MrsEvil · 15/05/2020 08:08

Johnstone's paint will match the colour of f and b and it's amazing quality, my dad is as professional decorator and uses it in place of f and b all the time. They mixed up elephants breath for me and I have it in my living room, bedroom and ensuite it looks beautiful and has not marked or faded.

Danglingmod · 15/05/2020 08:14

If anyone is wanting to go with own brands and wants to know which is the best quality, Wickes is hands down a million times better than B & Q (and infinitely better than Valspar). Really smooth application and coverage.

We have some rooms in F & B. Some in Wickes own range. Some in F & B copied by Leyland trade. Some in Dulux. The real F & B rooms are the only ones with all the pigment/changes of colour throughout the day.

MummaGiles · 15/05/2020 08:14

Agree with PP recommending Little Grene

lemontarty · 15/05/2020 08:26

I've used Valspar to paint 2 full houses now, love it, wouldn't use anything else.

EstellaHanclay · 15/05/2020 08:28

I've just used Leyland trade in a dark colour that I stole from f&b. They mixed it up in 5 minutes and 5l was £29.99
Fantastic colour and it only needed two coats so I'm happy. Can't really say how it will last yet though.

NiteFlights · 15/05/2020 08:36

F&B paint is thin - I’ve got used to it now, but there’s no doubt it takes longer because you have to do extra coats. This is probably the main reason professionals don’t like it.

A tip I think I saw on here was to get ordinary emulsion mixed in the same or similar colour and use that as an undercoat for F&B, which works quite well.

ITonyah · 15/05/2020 08:38

Does little Greene do that changing in the light thing? I'm addicted to that now having used F and B.

MrsKoala · 15/05/2020 08:44

My decorator friends say Johnstone’s is best for application. I wouldn’t recommend Valspar. We had our whole house painted in Valspar superior colours 4 years ago and while the colour/tone/finish was lovely it took £2k in paint as it required so many coats and within 6 months every room had substantial chips (from just leaning the corner of picture frames against it etc). Also not one mark wiped off, despite it supposedly being washable. Such a disappointment.

SnaccidentsHappen · 15/05/2020 08:49

The painter and decorator we use always uses Johnston's

ghostyslovesheets · 15/05/2020 08:50

Yes I’ve used Valspar for years with no issues - occasionally used Dulux or Crown and not noticed a difference 🤷‍♀️

CaptainButtock · 15/05/2020 09:09

@Rebelwithallthecause

Where is this please?

AnotherEmma · 15/05/2020 09:26

Earthborn and Little Greene.

Little Greene have a huge range of colours, not just the ready-made ones - you can look through the catalogue and choose the shade you want, then they'll mix it up for you with their machine. It's not a colour matching service exactly but there are so many colours that you can effectively find exactly what you want. We wanted to match the colour with some fabric and managed it.

CottonSock · 15/05/2020 09:30

My decorator has advised colour match johnstones washable acrylic Matt. They colour match to the f&b number.

Rebelwithallthecause · 15/05/2020 09:31

@CaptainButtock the Paint shop in Amersham that I mentioned ?

Rebelwithallthecause · 15/05/2020 09:39

If so it’s Jack & Artticus

They sell Earthborn clay paint (which I am using right now)
Also chalk paints and lime paints from a few other brands
The shop is open 10-2 at the moment. Possibly the most helpful shop owner and staff I’ve ever met.

ITonyah Earthborn does. Our living room looks very different in evening light. It’s really good coverage too. Two coats usually does it. We renovated our whole house with it and love it. I looked the other day and they are selling straight from website now too so can be ordered now.

buzzswole · 15/05/2020 09:56

Hellebore is very rich. Very red. Not as dusky as it looks on screen.

tiptoe22 · 15/05/2020 10:35

I've used Valspar and love it. I have renovated 2 houses, every room in the house painted Valspar and it's been fantastic. I have 2 pre-schoolers and it's still doing well! Would definitely recommend it.

We've colour matched various paints over the years.

OP have you tried F&B Sulking Room? It's beautiful, dark dusky pink warm tones. We colour matched and used Johnsons recently.

lidoshuffle · 15/05/2020 10:54

ITonyah, yes, Little Green changes colour depending on the light. It's also much stronger than you think it's going to be from the swatch.
