Death by M&S Ready Meals

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

They have so many healthy options and balanced meals I think you've bought super indulgent items! As a one off fine you're not going to eat this every day

DamnYankee · 13/05/2020 21:10

Shouldn’t food standards be modified in light of the fact that we have enough to contend with

No. Who on earth would enforce it? It'd be a bureaucratic nightmare. You goofed. Either eat w/ veg as an early dinner - no bedtime snacks - or don't eat it!

Get well soon!

PickAChew · 13/05/2020 21:10

The Lasagna and fish pie are both delicious, btw. I have them with lots of veg. Not very often though but only because I'm lactose intolerant and have to open a window afterwards.

Laiste · 13/05/2020 21:10

Last time i eat in a restaurant i ordered a chocolate fondue for pud.

When it arrived i was horrified! It was FULL of fat and sugar!

''Do people really eat these three times a day?'' I asked the waiter.

He just looked at me as if i was a bit strange ...

Pixie2015 · 13/05/2020 21:12

Don’t look what’s in just go off the picture it’s best way and make sure no one reads calories out loud

Booboodisney · 13/05/2020 21:13

What the fuck ? You can’t get Coronavirus from eating a ready meal, hth.

slipperywhensparticus · 13/05/2020 21:13

If your going to be picky learn to fucking cook yourself it's really not difficult even my sister stopped giving herself food poisoning in the end 🙄

Thisismytimetoshine · 13/05/2020 21:13

Look what happened when Jamie Fecking Oliver stuck his snout in. You can't buy full sugar anything anymore. And he's still as fat as fuck.

justasking111 · 13/05/2020 21:14

Guess the OP has never made pastry. Maybe marinade the box in rice wine vinegar and eat that Grin

Drivingdownthe101 · 13/05/2020 21:17

God I love a good orthorexia thread. It's been ages! Glad to see some normality returning

That’s exactly what I thought! Normal Mumsnet madness instead of coronavirus madness, it’s refreshing!

Stuckfornow · 13/05/2020 21:17

I’ve just demolished half a pack of their Mac and Cheese bites, the only bit of the packaging I read was the cooking instructions...😊

Booboodisney · 13/05/2020 21:22

@Thisismytimetoshine 😂😂 That’s what annoys me. Jamie feckin Oliver telling me what I can and can’t eat, and he’s a lazy chubby slob !

superram · 13/05/2020 21:24

I’m not sure what you expected ordering a pie? It won’t make you ill-have fish and veg tomorrow. Very little is bad for you in moderation and mixed with generally healthy food.

FreakStar · 13/05/2020 21:24

Well, this pie won't be any higher in salt and fat that if you had made it yourself or eaten it in a pub etc. The daily recommendations for salt, fat etc. are based on an average. Having a pie like this on one day in a week will be balanced out by other days when you eat a lot less than the recommended amount. It's about balance.

If we were to follow the daily recommendations on every day no-one would ever eat a pizza, or have take-away fish and chips, or get drunk, or eat a bag of sweets etc etc.

1forsorrow · 13/05/2020 21:25

I rarely have salt in anything, DH moans as I "should" use it in rice, potatoes etc. I suppose there is some in bread but I might have one slice toasted in a day but not a big bread eater. So the salt wouldn't worry me as I'm pretty sure I'd still be well under my daily allowance.

One was very high in fat but as long as you aren't overdoing it every day it isn't that big a deal.

I had chips tonight but they were with a fresh piece of cod baked and some carrots, peas and sweet corn. So low in salt sugar and but the chips might be a bit naughty but the balance is OK. I think it depends how it fits into the overall picture.

Booboodisney · 13/05/2020 21:27

Can’t stand when people cook without salt. It’s in recipes for a reason.

XxrosesxX · 13/05/2020 21:28

They won't harm you this time. Perhaps just have a small portion of the pie and add lots of veg.

I tend to not buy ready meals. I do use jarred sauce once or twice a week though.

Like I said I haven’t had the energy to cook. I normally cook from scratch and never add any salt but that’s just me.

Jesus....that steak pie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen nutritional info as shocking as that

It's. A. pie. WTF do you expect?

Don't whatever you do look at the nutritional content of pizza, it'll give you a heart attack

Mintychoc1 · 13/05/2020 21:31

Tell me about the mock exams, how does that work?

Lynda07 · 13/05/2020 21:32

I've had some nice ready meals from M&S, a steak pie wouldn't interest me but spag bol, carbonara, pizza and the like are lovely. I doubt their ready meals are any higher in salt and fat than any others, most aren't too bad. Anyway it isn't going to kill you if you only have it occasionally.

1forsorrow · 13/05/2020 21:32

Can’t stand when people cook without salt. It’s in recipes for a reason. I don't like salt so shoot me. I think salt spoils the natural taste of things, I always have salt free butter for example. Maybe that is why my blood pressure is low? Generally gives doctors a scare when they take it.

It all balances anyway as DH eats more than he should so my lack of salt doesn't have any effect on the universal salt intake.

grumpyorange · 13/05/2020 21:33

@BluSky5 I'm still confused. Why do you think they will make you ill again. It's literally 3 meals out of hundreds you will have over your lifetime.

Unless you were serious about eating it 3x a day?

1forsorrow · 13/05/2020 21:34

I normally cook from scratch and never add any salt but that’s just me. No it's me as well [big grin] You obviously have a low salt intake so I don't 3 days will hurt.

roarfeckingroar · 13/05/2020 21:36

That fish pie is brilliant though OP
