Thank you for this thread, I’m using it as a movie recommendation list. Think I’m going to watch Good Will Hunting first!

Also I think I need it rewatch shawshank because I never made it to the end, I found it boring and gave up. Thinking I need to try again - or maybe I’m just an uncultured swine!

Don’t think I have anything new to recommend but that’s hasn’t been already but love the Pursuit of Happyness - really tugged at the heartstrings!

pandarific · 14/05/2020 18:12

Recent one which I don't think got enough attention 'A Monster Calls' - would be a fabulous watch for 12s up.

pandarific · 14/05/2020 18:13

And YES @wizzbangfizz, that opening? A gentleman was passing by... shivers

roedear · 14/05/2020 18:22

Grave of the Fireflies - I swore to never watch after the first time as it affected me so much, rewatched recently after having children and will never definitely never watch it again, it is heart breaking on another level. No other film has ever affected me like this one did!

Actually the end is the worst bit of a rubbish film.

[ahem... SPOILER ahead!]

That final scene on the beach is totally unnecessary.

For Sama

Trainspotting 2 was like a punch to the guts for me. I think it’s the way it conveys the feeling of wasted years. I saw it and then went again with a different friend, she was left speechless afterwards.
I know it wasn’t a very well-received film and although I thought the first one was good I wasn’t a massive fan or anything. But all the parallels between the two and the sense that so much yet so little has changed... ugh... amazing film!!

DreamTheMoors · 14/05/2020 18:41

I had a quick look through and I may have missed it, but has anyone see Paradise Road? It's about a group of women in a Japanese camp in Sumatra during WW2. I can't forget it, and first saw it about 1998 or so.

Aglet · 14/05/2020 18:45

Yes! Like Tenko but better. I hope not have it on VHS (one of only a handful I kept), but no player now.

It must be nearly 20 years since I’ve seen that. I’m off to hunt for a DVD version now, thanks.
