To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

Ok @ MarieQueenofScots I was just trying to be constructive with regard to tourist locations in being proactive in the , now, inevitable onslaught of visitors ... like other places.
Clearly you don’t want visitors . That’s fine, but Boris Johnson has said that there’s no limit to the distance that people can take on their journeys.
So you either petition your local council or just put up with tourist litter and fouling.
It sounds to me like you clearly don’t like outsiders to your area full stop as you’ve said that tourists provide “ no benefit.”

Seriously it should be up to us to stop people littering or fouling? Shouldn’t people be reasonable human beings?

Not at all, I’ve said repeatedly on the thread ordinarily we have no issue. The fact they bring no benefit to the area is fact, there are no shops to spend in, pubs to drink in Etc.

@MarieQueenofScots
Yes.. you should be complaining to your council about littering and fouling... your council were voted in by your community and you pay Council Tax.
And just because your area has no pubs to drink in or no shops to spend money in shouldn’t be an excuse to not have people visit your neck of the woods.
Like I said, Boris Johnson has now said that if people want to travel to exercise, take in the scenery, play with their children or walk their dogs, then so be it.
My family are staying firmly in our home. We have no plans to travel anywhere.
However, people have now been given the green light to travel .
If you are lucky enough to live in a beauty spot then people will come.

What Boris said was without the say so of parliament or his cabinet and he shouldn't have said it. We are still at level 4 out of 5. 5 is when the NHS is overwhelmed. 4 means the NHS is just coping. It is too soon.

It is clear from this thread that many people are unable to use common sense.

1Morewineplease · 14/05/2020 20:57

Exactly @YouTheCat... people will only hear what Boris said.
So if people feel that they are allowed to travel, because Boris said, they will. It doesn’t mean that it’s right.

YouTheCat · 14/05/2020 21:21

Sometimes I just despair of people. I think I shall take your user name as a sign and have some wine probably more than 1More though .

We’re not exactly going to get new loos to cover the excess numbers during a pandemic but bless your heart Grin

Anyway as I said the situation has been resolved with no angst and hopefully by the time the roadworks are done people will have calmed down a little. You might think people should flock to an area where people cannot in places social distance, I think people should have slightly more sense. Maybe my mistake is thinking that of the british public!

On street parking in Whitby will be closed as will foreshore roads in Scarborough

Gothicashoker · 15/05/2020 07:18

15 mins is local, I'm talking about people driving over an hour!

Jeffersona · 15/05/2020 07:52

Just stay home and stop being selfish. Go to the park for exercise.
