To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

Unbelievable

Nimmykins · 14/05/2020 10:52

I also live in a seaside town where 100 per cent of the fines issued for lack of coronavirus social distancing etc. have come from people WHO DO NOT LIVE IN THIS COUNTY!

Don't go. It's not going to disappear.

Mittens030869 · 14/05/2020 10:55

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr That's very true. The Upgang beach was always very quiet, as I recall.

Mittens030869 · 14/05/2020 11:08

Although it's also a residential area, so on second thought, don't go there. The car parks on the way to Sandsend would be a possibility, although i suspect the car parts themselves will be closed.

I do think you should stay away, though, for now.

XingMing · 14/05/2020 11:32

Ferret, we agree that the management of the crisis has left much to be desired, but my point was that I am not convinced any government of any political party would have done better.

Another current thread is praising NZ's handling of the crisis (while questioning the temporary curtailment of civil liberties). Many of the posters are canonising Jacinta Ardern, but missing the point that the population of New Zealand is under 5m in an isolated land mass about the same size as the UK mainland. London alone has a larger population and within the M25 we also have one of the world's busiest airports. There's no comparison.

YouTheCat · 14/05/2020 11:56

So what about Japan then? Fewer than 1000 deaths and a higher population density than the UK.

XingMing · 14/05/2020 12:05

Some countries have managed it much better. Taiwan and S Korea also. In general, Asian countries have recent experience in corona-type viruses as there have been several outbreaks in the last 20 years.

Mittens030869 · 14/05/2020 12:10

Asian people also tend to be more prepared than we are to observe rules compared to people in this country, definitely judging by comments on Mumsnet threads.

How do you know?

And - that's all very well but are you going to then tell me that you live on a border so it's not very surprising? For example it would not be strange to meet people who live in Hampshire in Bournemouth, or from Devon in Lyme Regis.

Car parks are gradually reopening.

I don't even know how many fines have been issued in my town, I know how many the force have issued but not where.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/05/2020 13:20

So what about Japan then? Fewer than 1000 deaths and a higher population density than the UK.

More awareness in most Far Eastern countries because of SARS; habitual attention to hygiene and not infecting other people - masks on public transport are normal, and its very bad form to do things like blowing your nose in public.

People in Europe and the US - not just the U.K. - generally didn't take the threat of a pandemic affecting us seriously until after it was already quite widespread. The signs were all clearly there that this could take off in January and certainly by February- the blame for not heeding them can be shared between governments and individuals not taking responsibility for themselves.

LakieLady · 14/05/2020 14:04

Got another Bank Holiday coming up. We all know what's going to happen don't we

With a bit of luck it'll piss down with rain. That'll help keep people away from rural and coastal areas.

Ginfordinner · 14/05/2020 14:09

"the blame for not heeding them can be shared between governments and individuals not taking responsibility for themselves."

I agree, especially with the AND INDIVIDUALS bit. People are too ready to blame someone else when it all goes pear shaped. We all need to unclench, behave responsibly and be considerate towards each other.

We live 25 minutes from a massive beach but wouldn't go as that's where the locals need to exercise. It's just not necessary
.......
I'd consider a beach 25 minutes away to be local.

Ferret27 · 14/05/2020 14:25

XingMing, I honestly believe other parties would have listened to the science and not gone down the herd immunity route that Cummings convinced Boris to follow... This was a decision made purely because it meant business as usual.... This is the reason the number of deaths are only second to that of the US.
Do you honestly believe that any other party would not have followed the key steps taken by countries like Greece and NZ or Singapore!
Only this government would have the arrogance to come on TV every day and say we had no PPE issues... for weeks ... in direct contradiction to doctors, nurses and care workers... Only this government would send thousands back onto the tube without looking at the issues it would pose for those forced back to work by fear/ necessity or in some cases ...employers who have not put in safety measures to protect their workers ...

Ferret27 · 14/05/2020 14:29

Xiong Ming ..Please ask yourself why Boris said he consulted with Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland ... in direct contradiction to the elected leaders there!
Do you really think any other party would be brazen (arrogant)enough to lie time and time again to us...?

justasking111 · 14/05/2020 14:33

Well England has said to crack on, drive, enjoy, beaches, hills, lakes, we just have to take it on the chin as locals and take what precautions we can. We are not in Japan, Korea so have to live by our governments advice.

Ginfordinner · 14/05/2020 15:28

And everyone should use some common sense. In my case common sense dictates that I don't get in the car and drive somewhere that I can't park, can't visit the loo and can't distance myself from other people.

Ferret27 · 14/05/2020 16:05

justasking111 ... so you can follow the advice which is don’t travel unnecessarily... as that is still the message ...do you even give a shit about health workers, care homes ! If you do you won’t go to the beach if it’s not nearby...

JamieLeeCurtains · 14/05/2020 16:19

I'm still genuinely wondering where all these people driving to beaches, open spaces etc are going to go to the toilet?

Are they going to piss en masse (and the rest) in sand dunes and hedges? Or crowd into supermarkets?

There are NO public loos open in my tourist town by the sea. No pubs, no tea rooms.

BubblyBarbara · 14/05/2020 16:25

I'm still genuinely wondering where all these people driving to beaches, open spaces etc are going to go to the toilet?

People don't need to use the toilet all of the time. What about people who queue up for shop openings or new mobile phones 24 hours in advance? Or climb Ben Nevis? Or get stuck at the front of the crowd at Glastonbury? People can go several hours without the toilet.

OP posts:
MarieQueenofScots · 14/05/2020 16:45

That’s funny BubblyBarbara, you mentioned on another thread about being “of a certain age” and making contingency plans for a loo...

In any event, it’s reasonable to ask given Hancock has given amongst the reasons one can’t see family in one’s garden as “what if someone needs the loo”. It’s therefore a pertinent question to consider!

BubblyBarbara · 14/05/2020 17:12

Well yes, this is why I said "people" not me. It is clear that most people hold themselves for hours most of the time so all these endless comments about toilets seem pointless. I take care of myself as I need to toilet or no toilet, but I am not at Glastonbury or queuing for a phone am I, just suggesting going to the beach for an hour.

OP posts:
YouTheCat · 14/05/2020 17:13

I need to use the toilet a lot. I wouldn't even plan a walk longer than an hour.

justasking111 · 14/05/2020 17:14

Our local farmer has found human excrement complete with loo roll on his land, seems some folk cannot wait to get home.
