To go to Whitby beach tomorrow

BubblyBarbara · 12/05/2020 18:31

I’ve gone to Whitby every year for the past decade or so and I’m missing it dearly. I’ve read Boris’s PDF and it says you are allowed to drive any distance to “open space” from tomorrow so my plan is to go to Whitby and spend the day on the beach - social distancing of course.

But I did a search on Facebook about car parks etc (it’s ok the parking inspectors are furloughed so I can park anywhere I like) and found lots of angry posts on local groups about how the people of Whitby don’t want people coming into their town yet Confused

It’s legal for me to go tomorrow but the locals don’t want us to go.. who is BU here? I say the law is more important than what the locals say.

Agree glitter cheeks my in laws live in Kent would love to drive to see them and go to the cliffs but would never dream of it ! I knew people would have theses thoughts as soon as drive some where was mentioned it’s not fair on the locals

SueStan · 13/05/2020 19:21

Car parks and toilets closed but probably lots of visitors from further north possibly carrying the virus? Middlesbrough in particular has a very high infection rate I think. Narrow streets/steps to make physical distancing difficult.. I wouldn’t risk it for myself or my kids, or the locals.. but legally I guess you can..

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/05/2020 19:22

Why are you even bothering to ask? It's quite obvious that you fully intend to go and that you don't care a jot about anyone other than yourself.

Badouchka1 · 13/05/2020 19:23

You’ve no idea what you could be taking with you or bringing home! I just wouldn’t yet. I love Whitby, out of respect for it’s residents, I’m staying away and staying local for now.

jakkijax · 13/05/2020 19:25

So imagine that you stop for petrol on the way, you may pick covid up and swan around whitby dabbing it all over... someone else will pick it up and off we go again. You wont know until 5 days later of you start with symptoms... please please. Use common sense stay home or close to home.

Flyingskunk · 13/05/2020 19:26

Youre not going there to stay so how are you putting pressure on local services. I would def check the travel beforehand, leave early with all supplies and make an early exit and I don’t think I’d fancy it on a weekend. But it’s not up to the locals, tell them to stop coming into town to do their shopping because they’re making the shops busy.
We can all go where we like and if you’re not making a long journey I don’t see the problem.
My parents live in a village it has a small nature reserve it’s not that popular and usually quiet. It doesn’t have parking. Since lockdown it has been packed every weekend and cars parked everywhere including in the private rd up to it. That is out of order when people were told specifically they were not too drive and it has meant it’s become a no go for locals.

cupoftea84 · 13/05/2020 19:26

Referring to the locals as ruff raff and saying you'll just park anywhere. You don't sound like you like the local people in Whitby.
It's not their fault you don't live close to the coast.
It's a town with a high density population, small streets, lots of elderly residents. It's not a suitable place to visit at the moment.
I have family near there and would love to visit. I won't though because it's selfish to do so. But then you call people riff raff so I doubt you care.

stayclosetoyourself · 13/05/2020 19:31

I think it's a bit too soon. Just stay local and make the most of being allowed out to a local quiet spot.

Vynalbob · 13/05/2020 19:32

I know a couple both nearly 70 live in Whitby. I don't know how they feel but know they are distancing best they can and only go out once a day to exercise (walk the dog). I'd be peeved if I couldn't safely exercise if everyone within a couple of miles decides to go to the beach.
And there will definitely be a loo problem....
(unless there's a travel loo with the picnic)

Folks-

This was posted yesterday

OP posted to say she'd decided not to go (haemorrhoid issues)

It wasn't actually real anyway

Usernamerequired · 13/05/2020 19:37

Unreasonable, selfish and risky driving to a town an hour away. As bad as people driving from London to Wales or Scotland ‘just to walk the dog somewhere nice’. Leave it a while, at least until we are properly out of lockdown and safe

Barney60 · 13/05/2020 19:43

would it be just you, or you hubby 6 kids ect? think just you no one will notice really.

Muncher75 · 13/05/2020 20:07

People saying it’s unfair on the locals?! How exactly? OP is going to walk on the beach and maintain social distancing and it’s perfectly legal! Enjoy a lovely walk and the fresh air OP ignore these knobbers!

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 13/05/2020 20:10

Far worse to encourage their delusions!

I'm sorry, but this really is rude to the delicate people of Whitby Hmm

bonbonours · 13/05/2020 20:18

I live in Whitstable (not Whitby) but everyone here is dreading the influx of visitors when the weather is sunny making it less safe for locals to go out normally.

bright55 · 13/05/2020 20:23

If you like Whitby so much respect its residents by staying away. Instead get the kettle on and we will all come and sit in your garden.

lindyloo57 · 13/05/2020 20:25

Namechange7383 good point, us in the city need some fresh sea air, if the locals don't like it, they should stay indoors. We are welcomed in the normal summer when shops and cafes need us,

Alilouya · 13/05/2020 20:26

Whitby beach is tiny and the town is full of narrow streets. The law may say we can drive to beauty spots for exercise but lots of other numpties will be doing this too. Probably the sane numpties who think social distancing is a joke and who have no regard for your, their or anyone else's health. Do you really want to risk your life like this? I love Whitby too but wouldn't dream of imposing on the locals or visiting until it's safe to do so. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should!

HeronLanyon · 13/05/2020 20:29

I wonder if those in Whitmore or Whitburn (Not Whitby or Whitstable) are similarly worried.

Juliehooligan · 13/05/2020 20:31

Tbh I think you are being really selfish, you wouldn’t like it if everyone rocked up to where you lived just because they could. Have a bit more thought about the people who live there, and could get infected because of tourists.

HeronLanyon · 13/05/2020 20:33

Just not caring one whit . . .

MargotB7 · 13/05/2020 20:33

Ginfordinner

Keep your wig on. I must have missed it.

Glad they didn't go, no need at the moment.

Clymene · 13/05/2020 20:34

If you want to be welcomed back with open arms in the summer (and we would love you to come), please respect our plea to stay away now.

Respect goes both ways after all.

Whit business is it of yours if they are?
