“He absolutely loves his big boy car seat!”

...combined with picture showing a cute, smiley, barely of sitting age baby, in a toddler seat. ABUI to HATE seeing this all the time? A car seat is not a developmental milestone or achievement, safety should be priority. It makes me so sad that so many people seem to do this.

The latest Instagram post features a 6 month old baby sitting in his new “big boy” forward facing car seat.

I'm a bitch when it comes to car seat safety. I would be posting links to videos showing the difference between FF and RF in a crash.

HavelockVetinari · 12/05/2020 14:33

People who forward face their DC before age 3 (except in cases of severe travel sickness or similar) are fucking eejits.

Sparrowlegs248 · 12/05/2020 14:34

It's shocking how little some people care about car seat safety. I always se "oh hes too big to rear face" about a baby or toddker. No, he's not. My almost 5 great old, tall son has been ff for about 4 months. My very tall 3 yr old is still rear facing. I have a VW golf, older type so not especially spacious. It can be done.

I can understand why some people FF from around a year, especially as Extended Rear Facing is a 'new' thing. Despite it being safer, people aren't aware of it.

And also some kids are very travel sick facing backwards,so some parents choose to FF after a year for this reaSon. That doesn't make them 'eejits'.

But there's no excuse to FF a baby that is around 5/6 months!

Cheeeeesecaaaaakkkeeee · 12/05/2020 14:43

The law in UK is 18 months now isn’t it? That they have to be in a rear facing. Just hope they get pulled over and told it’s not acceptable.

Sirzy · 12/05/2020 14:43

It’s times like that when I can’t help but say “wow I’m amazed he is big enough”

I hoped with the new laws becoming more and more clear people would stop this competitive car seating moving.

Ds is 10 now and back then I was deemed mad for keeping him rear facing until 18 months.

PatchworkElmer · 12/05/2020 14:48

I hate this, too 😔

Ilovecats23 · 12/05/2020 14:48

Hmm this is difficult for me, my 7mo (quite big for her age, especially compared to her sister) has been moved into a new car seat. She’s been sitting for months but honestly the only reason I moved her over is because she hated her infant seat and would scream until she was sick. She still RF and will do until she’s four.

BadgertheBodger · 12/05/2020 14:51

I think it’s fine to FF if they’re younger but at the height/weight limit for the seat. My DS outgrew his rear facing seat at 2.5 so I don’t think I’m an “eejit” for moving to a seat where his head wasn’t sticking over the top. I do think anyone who does it with a baby is a dangerous cretin though.

Noti23 · 12/05/2020 14:51

I find it sad how people don’t know the potential danger they’re placing their child in! It’s makes me feel even worse that they are probably feeling proud of the cute picture that- to them- reflects their growing baby. It’s something that should be discussed by health visitors.

I know people will have decent reasons not to extended rf some children. But not following the (very lack) laws or putting a 9 month old in a high back harnessed booster just because they ‘can’ is so irresponsible and should be looked down on- not fawned over on social media!

Eurgh, YANBU. It is far, far, far safer to stay rear facing for as long as possible.

Noti23 · 12/05/2020 14:55

@Ilovecats23

I’m not talking about moving a child out of an infant carrier to a bigger rear-facing seat. My son out grew his carrier at 10 months and we did the same, he was much happier as he was less reclined.

Maybelatte · 12/05/2020 14:56

They obviously shouldn’t be forward facing but I do think moving up to the big car seat is a sort of milestone, I viewed it as one anyway!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 12/05/2020 15:00

YANBU. If I see anything like this I stick my sister on it. She’s a car seat fitter and knows her shit. She’s very good at diplomatically telling people their beloved children will resemble hamburger meat if they have a crash.

stretchedmarks · 12/05/2020 15:00

Those shitty Disney car seats absolutely kill me as well.

NewNameWhoDis9 · 12/05/2020 15:04

I’ve said things like this before regarding safety OP (under a different username) and got absolutely lambasted for being ‘interfering’ and a ‘busybody’. 🤷🏼‍♀️

LipsyGirl · 12/05/2020 15:05

I took a picture of my son in his “big boy” car seat the first time he went in it. For me it was a milestone, I think it’s mean to say it’s not a milestone for others because it isn’t for you.

However until 18 months old they should be rear facing

CuteOrangeElephant · 12/05/2020 15:06

YANBU.

I've had some pressure from my in-laws. Last time they were here to pick up my DD they put her in quite a flimsy looking forward facing car seat. In hindsight I should have never let them set off like that but I was made to feel precious and overprotective. DD was 2.5 at the time.

I then found out they put my nephew in it who wasn't even one at the time Confused. I have to admit that I now don't really trust their judgement anymore.

Whitestick · 12/05/2020 15:08

So are you going to comment on it OP?

Lllot5 · 12/05/2020 15:10

I won’t tell you all about putting the carry cot on the back seat then. 😳
Just say ooh I didn’t realise he was old enough yet. Don’t understand why people want their children to grow up quickly.

MitziK · 12/05/2020 15:12

Serious question, as I'm long out of the stage of trying to jam angry children into any car seat, as the buggers are a good six inches taller than me -

Where do their legs go? Mine were admittedly like long legged Geese from birth, but a rear facing seat after 9 months would have meant them spending every moment folded up like an accordion.

SunshineCake · 12/05/2020 15:14

Maybe he's in it for a photo and not actually been driving around in it.

fascinated · 12/05/2020 15:15

Yanbu

But I am fed up with these threads

titchy · 12/05/2020 15:16

"Let's hope he likes his big boy wheelchair when he's paralysed due to being in a forward facing seat far to early."

But I'm a snarky bitch.
