To be so upset they have got another dog.

I know this is out of my control and really nothing to do with me but I am so angry and upset.
My Dh’s sister and her partner have been together for 12 years. During that time they have had 6 dogs and only kept one long term. First, they had two Yorkies but got rid after a few months as they were too yappy, then came a small mixed breed pup but they got rid of her after a year as she pulled over one of the kids when he was walking her, next came a pug which they kept until he died at 8, then a cockerpoo pup but got rid at 4 months as he was too hyper and that upset the pug!, then last year (after the pug died) they got a Weimaraner pup but she went after 6 months as she was getting too big ffs!!
I’m a real dog lover and it absolutely boils my blood every time they get a new dog without any thought and I’m even more incandescent when they rehome them and don’t give it a second thought.
Dh told me yesterday they have just gone and got another puppy last week.
I am bloody fuming.

YANBU. people like this really upset me, treating animals as disposal. They shouldn't be allowed to be pet owners.

Mayorquimby2 · 12/05/2020 09:20

They're scum

Nothing you can do about it but not unreasonable to be angry and upset by their actions

Afternooninthepark · 12/05/2020 09:21

poppet31 I’m so frustrated because no matter what I say to them, they still go ahead. I’m also so annoyed with all of these unscrupulous breeders.

zscaler · 12/05/2020 09:22

Yanbu, that’s truly shitty behaviour.

HollysBush · 12/05/2020 09:22

YANU! Haven’t they learnt anything???! I’d be terribly embarrassed and ashamed to rehome one dog, let alone keep doing it. What breed have they got now?!!

Zaphodsotherhead · 12/05/2020 09:23

They aren't pet owners, they are 'triers out' of dogs.

They really don't understand that a dog isn't a piece of furniture that you can send back if it doesn't suit.

I agree that there's nothing you can do, but hope that people letting them have these dogs start asking them about their dog owning past and refusing to let them have pups.

Sending a dog back because it 'got too big' ffs...

userxx · 12/05/2020 09:24

Just fucking not on. I'd massively struggle to have any kind of relationship with someone like that. It's goes against everything I believe it and I'd have no respect for her whatsoever.

Have you ever told her how you feel?

Vanadis · 12/05/2020 09:24

YANBU. Poor Dogs

TheVanguardSix · 12/05/2020 09:25

Goodness me! YANBU at all. What is wrong with them? What void are they trying to fill and failing at? And given the mix of breeds, they have no idea what they're looking for. I wonder if they're like those rare people who love having babies but not children and keep pumping out kids in order to relive the baby stage over and over again. Maybe they love puppies and then once they become dogs, they get rid. How awful. I don't know what you can do. I'd be fuming as well.

caramac04 · 12/05/2020 09:25

They are selfish bloody idiots. Dogs absolutely should not be treated as disposable. I’d have a very hard time keeping my mouth shut and would probably upset them. I suppose there are diplomatic ways of advising them such as ‘have you researched the breed, size, temperament, exercise needs etc’ but they sound too stupid and selfish to understand it’s not all about them.

chunkyrun · 12/05/2020 09:25

Yanbu this infuriates me

Thymelord · 12/05/2020 09:26

They're scum

I agree with this. I feel really really strongly about people who do this. There is one in my family. I have lost count of the number of dogs and cats they have gone through over the years. Must be 20 plus.

StarWars222 · 12/05/2020 09:27

Fucking idiots. I cannot imagine doing this. I have 6 dogs, the eldest is 15. I honestly would have to give them a piece of my mind.

Dieu · 12/05/2020 09:28

YANBU. They are incurably stupid.

LeahDownTheLane · 12/05/2020 09:29

Lowest of the low.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 12/05/2020 09:29

The pug seems to be the only one they treated like a real pet. Please tell me they've got another pug, as at least they seem to be able to look after one of those (although 8 seems young to die).

Honestly, I'm still umming and ahhing after a year if we should get a dog for our family - because I work part time. I'd just decided we should look at getting one over the summer holidays (I work in a school so am off over the whole summer), when lockdown happened, and suddenly all around us people were rushing to get puppies. I get that if you were like us and planning to get a dog this year then getting one while you'd be at home for 10+ weeks makes perfect sense, but of the 4 people I know well who've suddenly got a puppy, only one was planning to get a dog this year, the others seem to want one as a toy for lockdown. I can't help but think come September there's going to be a lot of dogs at rescue centres. Sad And the decent breeders we had considered have said they are refusing to home puppies with anyone who wasn't already on their list, so we've accepted it won't be happening this year now!

PaperbackRitur · 12/05/2020 09:30

Awful. We’ve got one dog, for twelve years now and we’ll love him till the day he dies. I can’t imagine doing this.

Raella50 · 12/05/2020 09:33

I love dogs and we have one, he’s a rescue and he’s been here for six years now. But I don’t understand calling people “scum” for revoking dogs, sorry. That’s horrible. I think that if people don’t understand / can’t offer the appropriate are for an animal then they shouldn’t be rejoining them of course but I also don’t believe these dogs should be staying in a family that don’t want them just because you should apparently feel ashamed to rehome?! The dogs are hopefully rehomed to somewhere loving and more accepting of them. It really isn’t any of your business.

Afternooninthepark · 12/05/2020 09:36

Dh family are not animal lovers at all and think I over react. His nephew and wife have just got a golden retriever pup and whilst they are furloughed in lockdown the pup will have their undivided attention but they both work full time and when they return this poor dog will suddenly be on her own (and they’ll probably get rid of her when she starts misbehaving when she is bored on her own!)
As for sister and brother in law, I feel such rage towards them over this, I couldn’t sleep last night thinking of the poor little pup.
It’s a Daschshund pup btw.
And yes to the kid question. They have 9 dc between them.

mistermagpie · 12/05/2020 09:39

Raella I agree, to a certain extent, if this is a one-off scenario, but these people have done it multiple times!

I know a couple who have had four rescue dogs which have then been 'sent back' after a short time. Obviously a rescue dog might have behavioural problems based on its history, but if you think 'hmm maybe I haven't got what it takes?' the first time then why would you keep doing it?

CallMeRachel · 12/05/2020 09:40

Yanbu, can you divorce his family?! Sad

Feckless, irresponsible idiots!!

Not to mention how bad this is as an example to their multiple children!

People who breed to much and have too many pets are in need of psychological help imo.

This cycle won't stop until they get to the root of the problem.

Can you phone the breeder and tip them off not to sell them a pup?

Afternooninthepark · 12/05/2020 09:40

Raella50 of course it’s not my business (as I’ve said in my op) but animals don’t have a voice and if caring people didn’t voice their opinions then people will just do what they please with these defenceless animals. And when you rehome you have no idea (unless you personally know the people) what future the dog has, it could end up being rehomed over and over again or worse still, abused.

OP posts:
CallMeRachel · 12/05/2020 09:44

Ffs @Raella50

Why is there always one who misses the whole point? 8 fucking dogs!!!! Not one or two...eight!!!

'Not any of your business' the famous tag line that gets trotted out meaning people should look the other way when dogs are suffering.

They should be put on a blacklist if only there was such a thing so they can never own another pet.

A dog is for life.

Afternooninthepark · 12/05/2020 09:44

CallmeRachel I don’t have much to do with them at the best of times. SIL just isn’t someone I could be good friends with tbh.

OP posts:
Afternooninthepark · 12/05/2020 09:45

I wish there was a blacklist or some kind of review system for people like this CallmeRachel
