The new slogan - Stay Alert....

Alert to what? Is the virus going to break into our homes?
Listen out for someone coughing then run a mile from them.

What on earth does Stay alert actually mean?

At least Stay home made sense stay alert means nothing at all or AIBU?

Fairylillie has it correctly.
If people don't understand such a simple message then they're either really fucking stupid, or they're just being awkward on purpose, presumably so they can go on insisting that Boris Johnson is always wrong no matter what he does.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 11:17

I also feel entitled to slag the government off for their shambles

I'm not one to sit around saying 'well done' if I don't think it... good job that some of us actually speak out. We don't all sit there thanking them for their efforts when we can see what a shambles it's been.

Even the message is a joke. It appears to mean different things to different people. No wonder Nicola Sturgeon had decided not to use it.

Nicked off Twitter - sums it up to me.

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?
QuizzlyBear · 10/05/2020 11:19

Since 'get Brexit done' was a pile of utter horseshit, designed to make people think that such a thing was possible with a simple cross in a box, this government obviously assume that simple slogans with no meaning appeal to the stupid masses.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 11:19

I agree that if people can’t decipher the message ‘stay alert’ without explanation that’s on them really. And sadly on everyone they come into contact with.

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 10/05/2020 11:19

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?

Nothing yet until we've actually had the briefing.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 11:19

I'd never heard of the 'Lert' thing....

The message then is be a 'Lert' and watch out for the virus. Loving the funny reponses mixed in here, brightens up my rather boring day.

alibongo5

agree - be vague - send mixed messages - then deny responsibility

Sums it up perfectly

I was shocked to find out the speech this evening is pre recorded.

It's a sunny day and this is Boris 'workshy' Johnson...

GrumpiestOldWoman · 10/05/2020 11:23

It's obvious what it means, unless you're properly thick or just being deliberately obtuse

A million threads on here attest to the fact that even something very explicit 'stay home' was a hugely subjective message.

TooSadToSay · 10/05/2020 11:24

STAY APART would have been better.

longwayoff · 10/05/2020 11:25

Hopefully, it doesn't mean watch the neighbours, even more intently, for any slacking from 'the rules'. Leave them alone.

GrimmsFairytales · 10/05/2020 11:25

There a scale in terms of both the attitude to risk i.e. what you class as a risk, and what is a reasonable response. 'Stay alert' is very subjective IMO.

I agree it's a very subjective message, my idea of being alert could be vastly different to another persons. I don't think it's fair to say posters are thick, fucking stupid or any other insult that has been flung around.

We all know what alert means, when it comes to a visible threat. But when it comes to an invisible virus, staying alert will mean different things to different people.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 11:26

Well one thing’s for sure, after the briefing whatever the slogan turns out to be, there will be a bajillion threads on here asking what it all means. Grin

Fishflakes · 10/05/2020 11:26

Stay Alert isn’t very easy to do when you feel shit with COVID and for anyone else without COVID what does it even mean? Do they want everyone to stress out constantly? Stress is terrible for maintaining good health and immunity.

What are you supposed to be alert for anyway and what do you do if the threat eventuates?

HeartZone · 10/05/2020 11:27

Wait for 7pm
That. Is. All.

Fishflakes · 10/05/2020 11:27

STAY APART would have been better.

Spot on

OooLookSun · 10/05/2020 11:27

For me it means:

  1. Continue to practise social distancing when possible.
  2. Continue to wash hands a lot.
  3. Continue to monitor your own symptoms and stay home if you have any.

So everything we should have been doing anyway, carry on with it even if places open up more.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 11:28

This is perfectly summed up and goes over the neads of people that fling insults of people being 'thick' or any other insult they choose:

I think they should have used "Stay Vigilant" and educated the masses.

Every child who recognises letters would then be able to spell the word for ever...

Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 11:29

lol heads not neads! typo

OP posts:
Speedqueen2 · 10/05/2020 11:29

Not a subjective message at all, 'stay at home' is quite clear in its meaning. It's just people have chosen to 'interpret' or depending on how it suits them. And they'll choose how to interpret this one.

NotQuiteUsual · 10/05/2020 11:29

I think it means reporting all unattended luggage to the transport police.

FliesandPies · 10/05/2020 11:29

Wait for 7pm. That. Is. All.

Yes and sit NICELY children and be quiet.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 10/05/2020 11:31

To my body, it means insomnia lol
