For so many reasons recently. I feel so, so sad about what has happened to our country.

YANBU to feel that way

But this is what we voted for, this is us, even if some of us don't like it, they represent us.

Some of our countrymen/women's "I've got mine" attitude- from hoarding bog roll to supporting cutting benefits from the poor. It might be a small majority but it seems to be becoming more prevalent, or maybe I've just noticed it more.

And you think we're the only country who has hoarders?

AhoyRoy · 07/05/2020 23:59

And you think we're the only country who has hoarders?
I didn't say that. But as was pointed out upthread, nobody is allowed to give a uck about other countries anyway.

Hunnybears · 07/05/2020 23:59

Wasn’t this thread done recently??

EveryoneNoOne · 07/05/2020 23:59

I thought the " Cool Brittania " thing was basically just Oasis vs Blur with a bit of Pulp singing along with the common people thrown in.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 08/05/2020 00:00

Just look at who owns those papers. They want to make money above everything else, and don’t really give a fuck if that costs 1,000s of lives. So they wrap the message up in jingoistic nationalism to whip up a “spirit of rebellion” amongst their readers who don’t really give a shit if more people die because it’s only old people in care homes, or someone who is obese, or had asthma, or is BAME so long as you can go down the pub for a beer.

Ohjustboreoff · 08/05/2020 00:01

@roxannemonke I can see you've never lived in one of these countries. Until you do you will never appreciate the country we live in. Yes The UK isn't perfect but what country is and there are so many far far worse.

Ohjustboreoff · 08/05/2020 00:03

@Ahoyroy well toddle off to North Korea and tell me how you like living there with the state press, no poison there!

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 08/05/2020 00:03

You do realise it's not an either or situation right?

You don't have to be proud or ashamed. You can just be meh and go "fucking twats" under your breath.

No need to get the hair shirt out .

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 00:03

I follow political groups on Facebook like Leave EU, the racism really depresses me as well. Some of these pages have millions of followers as well before someone dismisses it as 'tiny minority' it's not. And before someone else tells me to stop following the likes of Ress-Mogg fan pages, I don't want to, I don't want to withdraw to an echo chamber, a want a broader view of what people think. God, it's so depressing though.

Just seen this comment under an article about Australia and New Zealand’s approach to the virus and think it is pretty apt.

To be so ashamed of my country and being British?

Unlike the MN readers when not so long ago, a majority of posters didn't give a shit about anyone struggling or dying if it wasn't because of COVID-19?

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 00:06

Yes The UK isn't perfect but what country is and there are so many far far worse.

The point is, we are moving backwards.

EveryoneNoOne · 08/05/2020 00:07

What countries do you like KenDodd ? Who should the UK be trying to emulate?

FourPlasticRings · 08/05/2020 00:07

But this is what we voted for, this is us, even if some of us don't like it, they represent us.

The English men's football team also represent us. I'm not ashamed to be British because of them either. Do yourself a favour and stop worrying about what other countries supposedly think of us- they probably don't think about us much at all. We're not as important as many people seem to think we are.

I understand feeling cross at the state of the country and worried for those it's having an impact on though. It always amazes me when people hear of tragic news, like coronavirus deaths, and their first concern is, 'Oh my, whatever will the neighbours think?'

yellowbrickwhorl · 08/05/2020 00:07

We do. And scratch the surface of that and you find Putin

You what?!

lol

KenDodd · 08/05/2020 00:08

I agree, but Boris will just lie his way out of it.

But you are one of those millions of followers... Or are you working on the premise that you're the only one so enlightened as to seek opinions outside your echo chamber?

1forAll74 · 08/05/2020 00:09

You could move to Alaska, which might cool you down a bit. !

Ohjustboreoff · 08/05/2020 00:11

@KenDodd says you. I don't think we are. The U.K. is just evolving, just because something or an idea is in the past doesn't mean it was wrong or didn't work. You could say there are no new ideas that we just tweak old one and dress them up and sell them as new.
I like change.

VenusTiger · 08/05/2020 00:11

My god if you seriously think the media or the press BS headlines and articles are a true reflection of civilisation in Britain, then you must, must, must stop buying into it. I haven't watched the news for over a year OP - it's agenda-driven, truth-twisting rubbish, it's half of the story, it's BBC (Labour related staff) biased, provocative, hate-filled, catastrophe-porn shite.
We are not the headlines. We also don't have to vote the way you do or agree with you - doesn't make us ashamedly bad people if and when we do.

isitfridayyet1 · 08/05/2020 00:11

Yes OP I'm ashamed of the government and their constant lying and twisting of the truth! Not meeting targets then moving the goal posts to act like they did as if we're all fools
and have a memory of a gold fish.

The press loves to hype up drama of any sort and at a pivotal time like this should be driven by facts and not gossip.

Student133 · 08/05/2020 00:13

If you genuinely believe Britain is as shambolic as you say, you lack any sense of proportion or understanding as to how awful most peoples lives around the world truly are, and you should try getting out of your bubble and acquire some perspective.

Undercovermuvver · 08/05/2020 00:13

So, you feel uncomfortable about our country. Last time I looked we felt very uncomfortable as well.

I don’t particularly like going out clapping as it seems a bit absurd, but I do. The only thing I got was a load of mozzie bites....
