For so many reasons recently. I feel so, so sad about what has happened to our country.

Not another government bashing thread? Boring.

KenDodd · 10/05/2020 14:30

We did hope to leave this year, CV has made that pretty much impossible this year and Brexit (loss of our EU rights) will make it extremely difficult after that. And for the people comparing the UK favourably against living in a war zone, you're right, we could go downhill loads more, we have much further we can still fall before it's worse than Syria.

In the last ten years racism has increased (not surprisingly considering the way it's been stoked) poverty has increased, public services have been starved, Brexit has created divisions that hardly existed before and is a huge threat to the peace in NI (although nobody in England seem to give a shit) Tory austerity has killed tens of thousands and even life expectancy in certain communities is reducing. The public see all this and cheer and cheer for the politicians responsible, I despair for the country I really do. .

So where would you like to move to Ken Dodd?

Snowdropfairy85 · 10/05/2020 15:13

While I think the handling of the PPE is embarrassing and the figures heartbreaking, we do live in one of the most densely populated countries in Europe, if you compare it to Italy for instance- “Overall, the UK is considerably more densely populated, with about 275 people per sq km compared with about 205 in Italy” (from a BBC article), there’s no doubt this will have an effect on our figures.

I do think our lockdown should have begun earlier but I also think whatever the government did, the people who didn’t vote them in would be whining about the fact that they didn’t vote them in.

YouJustDoYou · 10/05/2020 15:36

Oh don't be such a Dementor op.

pilates · 10/05/2020 16:10

Yes where did you intend to live op?

CherryPavlova · 10/05/2020 18:34

Country wise that’s true. City wise Milan beats Birmingham hands down in terms of population density. They also have an older population and more inter generational living.

We are an island. Entirely possible to control our borders quite firmly when Italy and Spain gave us clear warnings but the government chose not to.
Entirely possible to monitor and restrict incoming flights and test or quarantine before entry but the government chose not to.
Instead they chose to allow their cronies to take advantage of Cheltenham and let major football matches from a heavily infected region arrive.

They continue to spin and lie.

KenDodd · 10/05/2020 22:00

They continue to spin and lie.

It's not so much that our politicians lie that I object to (well it is, it was never ever as bad as now) it's the fact that our population and press love and cheer for the lies.

And aren’t we lucky to have you as the one person clever enough to see the truth and spell it out for us poor sheeple! Grin

eaglejulesk · 11/05/2020 00:00

excellent healthcare, education for all, benefit system for those in need.

Post COVID - furlough scheme where government pay 80% of wages, business grants, interest free loans.

You do realise that these things apply in other countries too, it's not just happening in the UK?

CendrillonSings · 11/05/2020 01:15

So what? This thread is about the UK, and some people’s irrational moaning about it.

IneverHadTheLatin · 11/05/2020 01:26

As others have asked , which country do you want to go to KenDodd and more importantly, are you confident that they would want you ?

Walkaround · 11/05/2020 08:27

KenDodd - just for saying the public cheer along with all the things you object to, as though you are the only human being in the UK who objects to it, you can have a gold medal for stupidity. But hey, go find a country you don’t yet know or understand enough about to inflict your armchair politics on, and then spend the rest of your life trying to justify your choices to yourself when you have decided that country has let you down, too.

Hingeandbracket · 11/05/2020 08:30

So long Ken Dodd good luck with wherever you are off to being better for you.

Alsohuman · 11/05/2020 08:44

And aren’t we lucky to have you as the one person clever enough to see the truth and spell it out for us poor sheeple!

Except they’re not the only one.

Clavinova · 11/05/2020 10:06

Instead they chose to allow their cronies to take advantage of Cheltenham

"academics at the University of Gloucestershire's Centre of Contemporary Accounting Research estimate that the four days of racing brings more than £100m to the Gloucestershire economy."

pilates · 11/05/2020 10:39

Ken Dodd are you going to answer the question that numerous people have asked? Where did you want to live?

Goldenbear · 11/05/2020 11:00

What is odd about these discussions including the other thread about 'insufferable England' is that 'conservatism', 'class' existing in this country appear to be a surprising occurrence- we have always had those things and arguably the foundations of our culture are based on that system, rightly or wrongly so why is this a revelation?

emz771 · 11/05/2020 11:11

I suspect Ken Dodd won’t ever answer that question!
