For so many reasons recently. I feel so, so sad about what has happened to our country.

YANBU to feel that way

The germans have the Bild (I think)?
Some other european countries have trash but more in magazine format. Can't do much research as my language skills are quite limited.
Let's not even mention America and the stuff that gets printed there.
You are not exclusive in printed toiled paper.

FourPlasticRings · 07/05/2020 23:39

Because, internationally, we (collectively) are a joke.

Ultimately, I think we need to stop treating the world like a popularity contest. I don't get why we seem to have this need to be approved of by other countries (or rather, the media of other countries). I strongly suspect that the vast majority of people unconnected with Britain don't give a monkey's about Britain.

KenDodd · 07/05/2020 23:39

Has anyone called me a traitor yet? Or said it's just that I don't 'believe in Britain' ?

I agree, our press are awful, and it’s so in our face just now - every day, goady questions trying to cause division and humiliation where they can. DH who is Irish tells me that they don’t really have a tabloid press - not sure if this is true but the tone of their news when I am there is different. I feel ashamed of Britain but consoled a little by being Scottish and Nicola sturgeon who I think is showing great humanity and leadership.

AhoyRoy · 07/05/2020 23:40

The election system is broken. The majority of people in this country did not vote for the conservatives.
I am ashamed that I didn't have enough info in the AV vote to vote for it. I can't remember my specific reasons for voting no- I think I had just turned 18 and probably didn't research it properly. But AV would have been 100% better than what we have.

Dotty1970 · 07/05/2020 23:41

YADNBU
Completely agree.

And I think if we all stopped drooping about feeling ashamed and slagging ourselves off constantly we might actually stop looking such a shower of pathetic twats. How can we expect anyone else to respect us when we are so busy whining about ourselves?

Agree totally. It's very self-indulgent and narcissistic.

Sosadandempty · 07/05/2020 23:44

I completely agree OP.

Boris Johnson standing outside Downing Street saying that the way the virus has been dealt with here is a success is the sickening cherry on the cake Sad.

PositiveVibez · 07/05/2020 23:44

Yadnbu

I hate all this 'so proud to be british' bullshit.

I've never felt 'proud' because of geography. I just don't get it at all.

The 'have a party at home for VE day' has annoyed me.

2.00pm - listen to Winston Churchill speech
3pm - eat cake
4pm go on your doorstep for a socially distanced drink with neighbours

Fuck off.

Ohjustboreoff · 07/05/2020 23:44

@kendodd what? Are you serious? So you think our press who can write what they want make the whole of Britain a horrid place to live? How about living in China or the Middle East where the press is censored or countries where homosexuality is illegal. Or places where being a woman makes you a second class citizen. Freedom of speech who needs that. Stop posting utter drivel.

BBCONEANDTWO · 07/05/2020 23:45

I'm not ashamed and I'm sick of people saying that other countries see us as a 'laughing stock'. It's not that when they want tourists or we're buying goods from them. I'm happy and proud to be British - we have as much equality as we can, we're not (in most cases) racists, we're tolerant and kind and have a great sense of humour - all IMO of course.

So no - I'm definitely not ashamed and happy - indeed delighted to be part of our society.

FourPlasticRings · 07/05/2020 23:46

I've never felt 'proud' because of geography. I just don't get it at all.

Indeed. Equally, I've never felt ashamed because of geography and don't understand that either.

PositiveVibez · 07/05/2020 23:47

sosad couldn't agree more. We had a holiday booked for Greece in June. Obvs not going no, but can't do anything about that.

Death toll in Greece - 148
Death toll in UK - 30,000+

How the FUCK can he call that a success.

I strongly suspect that the vast majority of people unconnected with Britain don't give a monkey's about Britain.

This^ I think it shows a certain arrogance to think that people in other countries give a toss about what is going on in Britain at the moment. I'm sure they're more interested in what their own governments are doing.

Sosadandempty · 07/05/2020 23:49

He doesn’t deal in reality - he deals in soundbites that are designed to re-configure the truth. He is utterly dishonest and has no integrity whatsoever.

KaptenKrusty · 07/05/2020 23:49

I live in the uk - but since Brexit, the last election and now the handling of this whole virus situation - I’m packing up and going home - it’s a shame as I love it here and was making a life here with my husband and we were about to buy a house - but I just am starting to hate so many things here and feel unwelcome after Brexit tbh - so we are bailing!

Thankful to not be British and get to keep my EU passport.

AhoyRoy · 07/05/2020 23:50

@kendodd what? Are you serious? So you think our press who can write what they want make the whole of Britain a horrid place to live?
Yes, actually I do. Or at least contributes to it. The gutter press is poisonous.

Sosadandempty · 07/05/2020 23:50

(That was in response to @PositiveVibez)

LastTrainEast · 07/05/2020 23:51

OP you've been listening to armchair experts again haven't you. Plenty on here like that.

PositiveVibez · 07/05/2020 23:52

Yes I know Greece has a much smaller population. Greece around 11mil, England nearly 60mil.

Figures still nothing compare to us.

Cracking job.

KenDodd · 07/05/2020 23:55

I have noticed a bit of a pattern. It seems to me that countries with populist, lying, governments have performed particularly badly on CV.

OP posts:
LivingOnAnIsland · 07/05/2020 23:55

So you're just trying to do some shit stirring?

AhoyRoy · 07/05/2020 23:57

And for me, it's not even really the government I am ashamed of- it's some of the people around me. Some of our countrymen/women's "I've got mine" attitude- from hoarding bog roll to supporting cutting benefits from the poor. It might be a small majority but it seems to be becoming more prevalent, or maybe I've just noticed it more.
