To think easing lockdown on Monday is allowing a second peak to happen?

Exactly that really. Still 4,000 odd infections a day, 600 deaths a day and there easing up on Monday.

they won't be lockdown lifting on Monday - although possibly in the construction industry? Today there has been another 600 or so deaths..... this is very worrying. We have now overtaken all other European countries with the death toll which stands at 30,000.

Stellamboscha · 06/05/2020 18:43

Why did all the other countries do it? They don't have an nhs.
Eh???? All other countries have health services and in the developied world they have better health services and much health outcomes.

Redtickreturn has it right - boris johnson said if possible they would introduce some changes on monday, to be announced on sunday. This was in the context of his explanation why he was going to announce the measures on sunday, rather than announcing them by way of a statement to parliament. (Speaker had raised this as an issue).

I Didn't watch the press con - did anyone ask robert jenrick about this - whether measures were likely to be eased from monday, and if so what? My impression had been it was going to be no systems go until end may, but today’s pmqs seemed to be a shift of emphasis. This may of course not materialise.

I can see a commonsense view that you would lift things step by step. If there is effective sampling going on and has been over past few weeks, could you have some idea, within a week of Easing things on monday, whether r is increasing? (Given incubation often around 5 days, though frequently longer) Statisticians can confirm/deny whether thats possible! Ive No idea what the Current position on sampling is - ive got lost with the various References to dIfferent testing ‘pillars’ Eg porton down, and subsequently announced programmes.

The main problem I see is that the young and healthy will blame "Boomers" for ruining their lives as they think the NHS was There to stop it being overwhelmed by the old and sick. There was enough resentment already after Brexit.

crispysausagerolls · 06/05/2020 18:45

I reckon quite lot of people, if they are being honest, are enjoying a 20% pay cut to just sit around at home all day. Of course they don’t want lockdown lifted!

crispysausagerolls · 06/05/2020 18:46

Eh? The construction industry has been allowed to work the whole time

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/05/2020 18:48

I hope lockdown is lifted soon.

A second wave is going to happen WHENEVER we release- 3 more weeks will make no difference at all.

We need the second wave to happen during summer, not winter when flu season is upon us again.
Ending lockdown is the right thing to do now.

Stellamboscha · 06/05/2020 18:50

According to the Telegraph (and I'm guessing they'll be in the know) the 'Stay Home' will be dropped. Would be funny if it changed to Go out to Work ! Protect the NHS! Pay taxes.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 18:50

@Noextremes2017
I am 60+ have got heart and lung issues - but to be honest I am not fretting about the virus. I am taking sensible precautions with what I do and as things open back up I'll amend those if I think I should.

I feel that this is fine if everything is within your control. However it isn't for everyone. Its find if the work place puts things into place. As it stands it sound like it will be up to the employer and may not be enforced. As a class teacher sadly it isn't and you may be put into a position that you have limited control over that may put yourself and your family at risk.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 18:52

I think its a ridiculous notion to say we can orchestrate a second wave to fit in with the summer time. It is entirely possible we could have multiple waves through the winter as well!! Utter nonsense.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 18:53

Also there is little evidence exactly of what immunity there is. Oh well guess we will be the guineau pigs and find out.

Devlesko · 06/05/2020 18:53

So when would the second wave happen then? Because if they aren't allowing the leisure and hospitality sectors to open, the peak will be whenever they open again.
Which according to Boris was end of year, right in the middle of flu season.

TinRoofRusty · 06/05/2020 18:54

The virus is affecting my mental health, l feel safer in lockdown. So who is top trumps in the mental health stakes?

So stay in then. The whole world will not stay in lockdown for one person.

neveradullmoment99 · 06/05/2020 18:54

While I get totally that the lockdown has to ease, the way it eases is absolutely critical.

Stellamboscha · 06/05/2020 18:54

I had a text from my GP surgery today reminding patients that they are open for business including on the BankHoliday (distance consultation) -clearly they are anxious about people not consulting when they should be.
As it happens I have an ailment completely unrelated to COVID that I have not seen the GP about (normally would have) because a) I assumed they were overworked and b) I don't see the point of a phone call consultation. We definitely need surgeries I open soon!

fromlittleacorns · 06/05/2020 18:55

Alexis i also have been puzzled by the idea that it would be better to stay closed until september, when winter flu is round the corner. Though i suppose another 3 weeks now, until end may, might Be thought to allow A bit more time for track and trace to be up and running, drug treatment trials produce some results, etc?
Cancer treatment and other treatment including dentistry could be addressed during lockdown if there is capacity and ppe?

On the other hand the benefits of ‘step by step’ and the other costs including human costs of lockdown have to be taken into account.

FliesandPies · 06/05/2020 18:56

What a bunch of bastards, fgs. They are politicians but have no idea how to lead. Just put out slogans, trawl social media, see what the public mood is then cobble together some kind of lockdown-easing-lite.

totallyyesno · 06/05/2020 18:57

If everyone wore a mask I don't see why museums and NT houses can't open again. If staff feel their health is at risk and have underlying conditions they should be allowed to stay at home.
I think that would be difficult given the advanced age of most NT volunteers!

FliesandPies · 06/05/2020 18:59

I think that would be difficult given the advanced age of most NT volunteers!

Many volunteers are young people, the majority of older volunteers are 50's and 60's so not currently classed as high risk.

JemimaShore · 06/05/2020 19:00

Government isn’t managing us or allowing us some freedoms - it’s releasing more of us to the virus.

Yes. It's hard for me get my head around this, on a day when another 600+ deaths were announced, and we've now the highest death count in Europe.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/05/2020 19:01

Alexis i also have been puzzled by the idea that it would be better to stay closed until september, when winter flu is round the corner

Me too! I have asked everyone who keeps saying september, why is this the magic month but noone has given me a proper reason why september is "safer" than any other month. Plus, as you say, thats right before winter- the worst possible timing for a second peak!

totallyyesno · 06/05/2020 19:03

@FliesandPies All the volunteers I know are in the seventies but I am glad to know there are plenty of younger ones too!

LonelyInLockdown · 06/05/2020 19:03

We can't stay lockdowned for ever.
How can we pay for the blessed NHS if the country is bankrupt?
Let's get back to work.

LakieLady · 06/05/2020 19:04

I feel it's too soon as well, @OldLace. I'd like to see R at 1 very quickly and the numbers of those infected would start to increase exponentially again.

As there appears to be an incubation period of approx 2 weeks, that could be an awful lot of people infected before anyone even noticed.

Waiting till R=
