To think easing lockdown on Monday is allowing a second peak to happen?

Exactly that really. Still 4,000 odd infections a day, 600 deaths a day and there easing up on Monday.

Duffeldaisy, you are not seeing the long view... yes the government may continue to support people (ie give money) but many many people will be unemployed long term after lockdown

Already there will most definitely not be a “going back to normal” for those thousands of workers laid off by BA, Debenhams, Uber, Leisure, hospitality etc etc

We are, as a nation, already in for the worst recession we have ever lived through.

We are currently still cocooned by furlough and lockdown.

Once we go back to “normal” we will all see the world has massively changed

A year of lockdown would mean there would literally be no money, you see, we need people to work do they pay tax so we can have education, healthcare and furlough etc.

Would love to know what sort of work you do to be totally unfazed by a year or more of lockdown?

imsooverthisdrama · 06/05/2020 18:12

I can't over the constant moaning about the lockdown from some people. Is it really so difficult to stay at home?
Of course it's not but it's for how long ? .
I'm furloughed I'm doing ok compared to many . I sat in my garden today as it was so nice with a glass of wine but if the country doesn't start easing this lockdown soon I won't be able to afford milk never mind wine.
It's the jobs that people are worried about do people not see this .
Yes the virus can be deadly but we have been in lockdown for coming up to 7 weeks we can't do this indefinitely, we will have no future .
It's not about being bored which of course we all are .
Yes we have to be careful but you must be able see this needs to be eased .

butterdaisy · 06/05/2020 18:12

Have they actually said they are easing the lockdown on Monday?

If anything I think they need to be stricter as people are starting to be complacent.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 06/05/2020 18:15

Yes they have daisy. In pmqs today.

iamapixie · 06/05/2020 18:18

If people want to stay locked down then I suppose they are welcome to do so. However, I'm not sure how the rest of society is meant to support these people. There are going to be fewer and fewer of us to pay taxes, and it's particularly concerning that many with low risk seem to have decided that they're going to die because someone sat on a bench/went jogging/bought chocolate etc, and if those people also decide never to leave the house, are the very few taxpayers left meant to support them too? And the genuinely vulnerable - especially children and the young who are overwhelmingly at very low risk from the virus but whose futures will be most negatively impacted - will be made to pay.

midgebabe · 06/05/2020 18:18

Mippo, the idea that there must be a second peak , let's get it out of the way does not stand to inspection

Either we get enough infected in a second peak that we get immunity, in which case we we overwhelm the nhs and lose an aweful lot of people. In that case , why have the lockdown in the first place?

Or we control any peak...wheerupon we don't get enough people ill to get herd immunity by the time we get to winter...and then what do you propose? A winter lockdown to protect the NHS?

Cornishclio · 06/05/2020 18:18

Well we cant stay in lockdown forever so we have to find a way to live with this virus. Lots of people are already breaking the rules and there undoubtedly will be a second peak but so long as the NHS is able to cope we just have to hope it is ok. The vulnerable will have to remain shielded for some time though and anyone who presumably is scared and would rather not risk it can carry on shielding too. It just means those of us who would like to see our family can and we will have to accept any risk. I don't plan on going to any pubs, restaurants any time soon and will not use public transport. I have a holiday booked for June but will be rearranging it as I don't think all the facilities will be open and I would rather avoid crowds for the foreseeable future. I think a lot of people will do that and continue to social distance.

imsooverthisdrama · 06/05/2020 18:19

Yes but easing not ending !!
I suspect it'll be 'is that it ' on Sunday .
It probably be just a few business to start nothing major , most won't be affected .

SusieOwl4 · 06/05/2020 18:27

The media are absolutely the worse . Just wait and see what happens and considering a lot of the population are ignoring the rules anyway I hope the government are clear about the next stage and that the newspapers STOP printing misleading headlines .

We have never had true lockdown anyway and still there is an outcry about lack of freedom and conspiracy.

Let’s just wait and see and boycott all the papers that are printing absolute nonsense .

MsSafina · 06/05/2020 18:28

Anyone who is worried about their health should stay indoors and shield. The young and healthy whose lives and careers have been put on hold should go back to work.

BlueBrian · 06/05/2020 18:31

Anyone who is worried about their health should stay indoors and shield
No problem with that as long as we get paid for it,

LakieLady · 06/05/2020 18:31

I wonder if it will mean that places like NT gardens will be allowed to open again, but not places like museums?

I think museums, galleries and historic houses could open safely if numbers were restricted so that social distancing could be observed. People could have the option of booking a times slot or just queue up like they do for supermarkets.

Of course, the tea rooms and cafes would have to be take-away only.

girlie123 · 06/05/2020 18:31

But wasn't the lockdown put in place to slow down the rate of infection, not to get rid of it.

The virus is here, it's not going anywhere, we have to learn to live with it or stay in our houses for years (slight exaggeration).

Pressure needed to be eased for the NHS to cope with people needing treatment, a phased exit out of lockdown will allow the NHS to do just that and let people get back to work so the economy can start recovering x

RedAzalea · 06/05/2020 18:32

No I doubt it will be anything major too

Just business based.

radiantrose · 06/05/2020 18:32

I can't believe the poster who reckons it's murder 🤣 why don't you stay indoors then and continue your own lockdown? No one is forcing you to go out, honestly!

MsSafina · 06/05/2020 18:32

I am Ok financially but son no 3 has lost his job in tourism. I may be supporting him and his family for quite a while.

imsooverthisdrama · 06/05/2020 18:35

But wasn't the lockdown put in place to slow down the rate of infection, not to get rid of it.
Yes !!!

GinnyStrupac · 06/05/2020 18:35

We will have to see what the PM says on Sunday, but on the face of it YANBU.

Also concerned that he is not putting it before the Commons first.

MsSafina · 06/05/2020 18:35

If everyone wore a mask I don't see why museums and NT houses can't open again. If staff feel their health is at risk and have underlying conditions they should be allowed to stay at home.

Lockdown wasn’t designed to eradicate the virus, it’s to manage the load on the NHS.
People just don't se to have grasped that. People will catch the disease and a tiny minority will die earlier than they would have done - but there is no alternative.

HeronLanyon · 06/05/2020 18:36

I no longer see it as us being protected bits all about allowing the virus to do what it will do but in a manageable way. So I see the government easing lockdown as managing the virus. Allowing us to be infected and there to be continuing deaths in a manageable way that our infrastructure can cope with as best as possible. It’s become necessary that we continue to be infected at a steady rate. That shift on my thinking happened about 2 weeks ago. Government isn’t managing us or allowing us some freedoms - it’s releasing more of us to the virus.

Stellamboscha · 06/05/2020 18:38

Murdering bastard that I am.

MarshaBradyo · 06/05/2020 18:40

Some easing is ok not full blown through every back to what it was.

Get as much economic bang for the case load buck. Eg wfh where you can, SD as much as possible. Keep events off the table,

doublemix · 06/05/2020 18:42

Purpledanish is there any need to be so rude!

Obviously I meant to write England rather than Britain and I'm sorry that I didn't read all the facts when the post on BBC news said that Nicola sturgeon had stated in today's release that she was extending for 3 more weeks but I maybe naively presumed that as I had also seen the same on other sites that it was the truth.

I will make sure I do many more hours research in future before I dare to make another post. Maybe I just presumed people don't take everything they read on a forum to be gospel and they probably look further into things. Also the post was probably more of my musing on what would we do if one of the devolved government decided to do things differently to England.

Also why you have picked out my fairly innocuous post from the many on here I have no idea. You know what they say if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all.
