To think easing lockdown on Monday is allowing a second peak to happen?

Exactly that really. Still 4,000 odd infections a day, 600 deaths a day and there easing up on Monday.

@imsooverthisdrama They are the shielded group, not the vulnerable group - the vulnerable group are the ones with underlying health conditions who are just being thrown to the wolves.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 06/05/2020 16:17

I understand why winter would be an issue re a second wave, but I would have much preferred to be locked down in winter. Way easier to stay indoors and my flat gets the sun all day so its boiling in summer. We don't have a garden.

Elmerrrrrrrr · 06/05/2020 16:17

we are still having 600+deaths a day

No we aren't.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 06/05/2020 16:18

Drunk on VE Day:

A drop of the old Vera Lynn?

Coronabored · 06/05/2020 16:19

Was just about to say that elmerrrrrrrr (didn't count the r's sorry) Smile

vanillandhoney · 06/05/2020 16:19

The vulnerable will stay at home

It's not the vulnerable who will need to stay at home, it's the shielded. They're two separate groups. Shielded people are currently not allowed to work and have to stay in the house for 12 weeks. Vulnerable people can still work and go out of the house. If lockdown eases, they'll be expected to go back to work the same as everyone else.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 06/05/2020 16:20

We NEED people to get covid, herd immunity is what protects the most vulnerable from it
Is this fact or opinion?
I thought the jury was out on whether having COVID infers immunity.

Coronabored · 06/05/2020 16:21

Fact according to our chief modelling expert.

Cloudiay · 06/05/2020 16:26

People are already out and about more, better to do it with actual guidance than just everyone going rogue. Also my birthday Monday so would be nice Grin

RoosterPie · 06/05/2020 16:29

Re New Zealand, yes it’s a silly comparison anyway, but also they now have to keep their borders shut, not ideal when it’s 6% or so of their GDP.

If there is no vaccine, what is their plan?

I’m not saying they’re wrong necessarily, but I think Chris Whitty had a good point when he said that we are early in this epidemic and the time to decide what worked well and didn’t overall is when it is over, not now.

imsooverthisdrama · 06/05/2020 16:29

It'll be gradual you are not all going back to work on Monday
I'm not sure what people expected , that we will be in this lockdown for months and months until we have a vaccine, it's not going to happen.
The lockdown is not going to end for a while it will just be relaxed .
We need to be able to manage this with social distancing and gradually getting back to work .

thatgingergirl · 06/05/2020 16:35

Easing means to make something unpleasant less serious or severe, or to move gradually and carefully - it won't be all back to school/work on Monday!

I just want to be able to spend time with my adult dd - opposite ends of the room/garden if necessary - I miss her.

BuddleiaTime · 06/05/2020 16:42

Vulnerable people can still work and go out of the house. If lockdown eases, they'll be expected to go back to work the same as everyone else.

Only if employers make appropriate safeguards for them.

Almost my entire family (young and old) is currently shielded. I find it deeply depressing how little value so many on MN place on their lives.

Still, as long as you can go back to a kind of normality screw us, eh? You've made that crystal clear.

vanillandhoney · 06/05/2020 16:43

I think people are well aware that it won't be all systems go on Monday morning.

They're still allowed to be concerned, though. Our lockdown was never a true lockdown - what Italy and Spain have "eased" to is the same as what we've had all along. Yet now Boris is saying he wants to ease measures even further - which means we'll be jumping ahead of Spain and Italy, even though our infection and death rates are still much higher.

vanillandhoney · 06/05/2020 16:45

Still, as long as you can go back to a kind of normality screw us, eh? You've made that crystal clear.

Hang on, that's massively unfair. I've never said anything of the sort. I simply said what would be expected by employers.

No need to jump on me like that at all.

mrsbyers · 06/05/2020 16:45

The briefing on Sunday will focus on measures to get furloughed staff back to work - there will be no sudden lifting of lockdown

midgebabe · 06/05/2020 16:47

But they are not treating cancer patients either because they are not coming forward through fear or because it's too dangerous. Both of which are effect of virus not lockdown . They are not on a 2 day week to comply with lockdown

DamnYankee · 06/05/2020 16:50

Murder? That's overstating it, but if you feel that way, continue to follow stricter guidelines.

Cases are going to go up, mostly because testing will become widespread, more accurate, and more available. Hopefully, we'll catch 'em early. Hoping remdesivir will be available soon and proves effective in shortening the course of the disease.

I think it's a good thing.

BuddleiaTime · 06/05/2020 16:50

@vanillandhoney

Only the first part of the post was directed at you.

The next paragraphs were a general comment on how this thread has been going. And how depressing it is to read.

vanillandhoney · 06/05/2020 16:52

@BuddleiaTime

Fair enough, thanks.

It is depressing, I agree. I think it's far too early to be easing lockdown.

tartanbow · 06/05/2020 16:52

@BuddleiaTime by your logic, none of us should ever leave the house. Russian roulette every time - doesnt mean people dont value their lives, people value their mental health and incomes too so that the lives they are living is worthwhile. suicide rates have gone up and unemployment will also be a knock on effect - do those things not matter either?

Jupiters · 06/05/2020 16:53

I'm hoping some restrictions will be lifted soon. I desperately need to see a dentist as I've broken a tooth. NHS 111 said "you need to see a dentist within 24 hours but none are open so..." Which wasn't overly helpful. I can't eat and can barely drink as it's so painful...I can't take another 3 weeks of this. Will do my diet a world of good but I'm really worried about dehydration.

RoosterPie · 06/05/2020 16:54

But they are not treating cancer patients either because they are not coming forward through fear or because it's too dangerous

Also because of a lack of capacity to free beds up to treat covid patients. My husband’s surgical oncology lists have been reduced for this reason.

@BuddleiaTime I sympathise and wish your family the best but can I ask your solution? The virus won’t be eradicated so whenever we lift lockdown it’s the same problem, isn’t it?

Elmerrrrrrrr · 06/05/2020 16:55

Also plenty of shielded people actually would rather take their chances with the virus than live like this. My granddad has said as much to me and so has my 45 year old auntie who is recovering from cancer

vanillandhoney · 06/05/2020 16:56

Also plenty of shielded people actually would rather take their chances with the virus than live like this.

They're perfectly free to to do so. They're not being locked in their houses - if they want to go out, who's going to stop them?
