To feel like the only woman left who doesn't shave her pubes? 😂

During a group WhatsApp with friends last night, conversation (somehow!) turned to pubes. It would seem I am the only one who doesn't shave the whole lot off. I've done it a couple of times in the past but it itched when growing back and I actually feel sexier with a bit of a muff! Does anyone else not shave these days or am I a vile ogre?

Full bush here! DH says he prefers it, not that he gets to decide anyway. I'm 42. Did shave the whole lot off a few times in my early 30s to see what the fuss was all about, but it was a huge faff and I didn't like the look on me at all: it made my torso look too long and a bit weird. Not sexy at all! Actually I don't think it looks sexy on anyone -- just look at the real people's bodies on something like Naked Attraction and the shaved ones look very unappealing! Whereas women look so beautiful with proper pubic hair. (My former girlfriends didn't shave or wax either, and I tell you any man who claims he can't give someone oral sex with a bush hasn't got much technique ;))

I also didn't bother doing anything to it when I was having my daughter and no-one in the hospital batted an eyelid at the bush. (There was a whole feminist movement in birthing circles in the 80s and 90s to stop women being shaved as a matter of course when giving birth, after research showed shaving didn't prevent infection, and actually encouraged it in some cases.)

I do feel sad that young women think it's obligatory, sexier or "cleaner" though. In the 90s when I was a teen, it would have been considered extremely odd to shave it! The trend really got started in the US after the millennium as an import from Brazilian grooming trends - popularised by Sex and the City and so on. Each to their own but it's a real shame if young women feel they absolutely have to. Good to think that the bush is coming back.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/05/2020 00:53

As a gym rat, I'd say at least half the women there don't shave them

grey12 · 06/05/2020 03:38

OP shaving doesn't have to itch! Don't go for the super clean look. Shave downwards with the hair. It'll look lika day old stubble but no itch!

I like shaving because I get a bit of discharge and it gets in the long hairs and gets itchy. Feel much clearer with less fluff

StarlightLady · 06/05/2020 06:50

@RabbityMcRabbit - Flowers - Exactly! An adult with or without hair does not look like a child.

Nobody tells a man he looks like a boy because he shaves his face, do they?

Nobody tells a woman that she looks like a child because she removes her underarm hair.

We are not all influenced by porn (by the way porn offers with and without hair!), nor do we do it just to please others. It’s a personal choice. And as mentioned previously, it increases sensitivity, which is a good thing.

Honeybee85 · 06/05/2020 06:53

I am completely shaved but I know it's a 'cultural thing'.

DH is Asian and was pretty shocked the first time he saw my hairless bits, in his culture women remove leg and armpit hair but not pubic hair.

Toomboom · 06/05/2020 07:14

No, never have done, and don't intend to!

StarlightLady · 06/05/2020 07:42

Full body hair removal is nothing new. I’m in my 40s and my mum removed hers.

Looking back a little further in time the Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Romans practiced full body hair removal in their bathhouses. I suppose someone is going to suggest they were downloading too much porn on their tablets! Grin

FarTooMuchWashing · 06/05/2020 08:29

I don’t and I never have.
I have a swimming costume with shorts and beyond that couldn’t care less.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 06/05/2020 08:56

It may have become in because of the porn, but I find People of course can do what they like with their physical appearance, I just don't believe it comes from personal preference. It's just porn influence and it makes people look like mannequins (at best).

To that I will say... Fuck off. You do realise that we do have brains? It's not like they suddenly disappear when we look at razor or, omg, porn?! We don't just turn into zombies chanting "must copy Mia. Must copy Mia"🙄

Women telling us we are too stupid to make our own choice and we just think we are making choice is just what women all over the world need🙄

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 06/05/2020 08:58

@StarlightLady I am sure they had some on tablets, but there is one on papyrusGrin Dirty buggers😂

MarieQueenofScots · 06/05/2020 09:01

Coming back to this and note none of the "it makes other women look pre-pubescent" crowd have bothered to engage in a sensible way.

What a shame they aren't willing to try and unpack such ridiculous and offensive views, and would rather spout nonsense then retreat.

bellinisurge · 06/05/2020 09:05

Shaving/waxing is gross. It's not like armpits or legs. The only people who see it are intimate partners or medical people for "access". Anyone who judges me for not conforming to their idea of what pudenda look like us a knob. A trim for a swimsuit is reasonable.

Bagelsandbrie · 06/05/2020 09:05

I have always completely shaved but for some reason I thought I’d stop during lockdown. I lasted a few weeks and I just hate it! Each to their own but I find having a full bush so itchy and uncomfortable. I genuinely feel much more comfy with it all shaved off!

I wish people wouldn’t have a go at others for doing something different to them.

Iwantacookie · 06/05/2020 09:07

I prefer it all off otherwise I find too full a bush makes me really sweaty.

I dont really care what others do with their bush as long as their not showing off the topiary in it to everyone.

Crystal87 · 06/05/2020 09:23

I don't mind having a bit of hair down there but I shave it off when it starts getting bushy. Most men I've been with say they prefer it bare if given the choice but don't really mind.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 06/05/2020 09:28

This is a ridiculous new fashion and VERY unhealthy. Pubes have a protective function. Why would a man not want a woman to look adult and normal? The only possible explanation is to look pre pubescent. This is not OK . If we normalise this look we are in deep trouble. I have great concerns how in the last ten years women have artificially gone along with a celebrity driven alteration of natural looks. It is a very dangerous message to give our daughters and sons.

Do you seriously think the only way a woman looks "adult and normal" is by having pubic hair?

I very much look like a normal, adult woman, I just don't have pubic hair.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 06/05/2020 09:35

Some of you pube fans are being so ridiculous and insulting. There is nothing wrong with choosing whether on or off.
To all of you judging others for their pubecut.
May your pubes always tangle in the middle and never sit right in the underwear. That's what you deserve for all that pedo and stupid comments.

Bagelsandbrie · 06/05/2020 09:39

I’m nearly 40, a size 16 and have 32G boobs. Shaving off all my body hair isn’t going to make me look pre pubescent. Hmm

Herecomestreble1 · 06/05/2020 09:39

Any woman who judges how another woman grooms herself is a total bitch. I literally could not give a flying fuck what your fanny looks like or your reasons why. It has NO impact on me whatsoever. You do you.

LightenUpSummer · 06/05/2020 09:48

Massive misunderstanding here.

There's a world of difference between criticising a trend/social pressure, and criticising the women who do it.

I remove my own fgs. Would I rather live in a world where it felt totally ok to go natural? Of course.

I'm a very committed feminist and I'd never blame an individual women for what she does with her own body.

Its not hard to understand really

MarieQueenofScots · 06/05/2020 09:50

LightenUpSummer

There's no misunderstanding - have you seen all the comments regarding other women looking "pre-pubescent" and "decent men should be feeling sick". the "last chicken on the shelf", "turkey nose", "ugh" etc.

I absolutely agree we can discuss the issue and dangers of pornification of society, but comments such as the above are massively offensive and do NOT take into consideration that some women have no choice.

cornersteps · 06/05/2020 10:01

Eh? A woman looks 'normal' with or without pubes ffs. What on earth are you talking about? A grown woman doesn't suddenly look like a 10 year old because they shaved their fucking pubes

This thread is nuts. I have never done anything to my pubes, I barely shave my legs tbh and I'm quite low maintenance (no make up etc), but, I fully understand that we are not all the same and people make different choices about their own level of personal care etc. I'm stunned that women, actual women, are suggesting the kind of shit from the quote above Confused

bellinisurge · 06/05/2020 10:05

I love the idea that not shaving/waxing makes me a "Pube fan"😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Anyway, wait till you are menopausal like me and it mostly drops out anyway. Saves you a fortune.
