To be really sad that Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman have separated.

Officially cabin fevered now but I have followed both of their careers and always felt slightly that Neil Gaiman held all the power since AP had their child 4 years ago. She posts often about how much she loves him, he never does this.
They were in lockdown in New Zealand together then suddenly he left to hid house in Scotland.
I feel really sorry for her stuck in a country with their child, heartbroken and unable to face to face sort it all out with her husband.

I’ve never heard of them either. Neither did I think they were reality stars. I just never heard of them, and yes I do read but clearly not his books. Off to see who she is now, I’ll admit, I’m not good on art

JinglingHellsBells · 04/05/2020 17:49

sorry but think it is odd that you are invested in strangers about whom you know nothing- and who I've never heard of anyway!

KotoMoto · 04/05/2020 17:49

I’m surprised at how many people don’t know who Neil Gaiman is. Do people not read?

I'm a keen reader. I've vaguely heard his name but knew nothing about him or his wife. Is it more of an over 40's thing? Or sci-fi?

Gingerkittykat · 04/05/2020 17:52

Amanda Palmer's 'There is no Intermission' tour last year was incredibly moving, a lot of it was spoken word about all kind of things like abortion and restorative justice and it had me in tears.

She pisses me off too sometimes, the shameless begging for money on Patreon and the woke bullshit and gender neutral toilets on the last tour. I think she is very much a marmite character.

I think the fact she talks about her relationship so openly means people are more emotionally invested. I think it's sad especially since she talked about pregnancy loss and wanting to expand her family and it will likely not happen now.

Ultimately I think AP will be ok.

Thanks to the person who posted Creep, that version always sends chills down my spine.

And Neil Gaiman is a fucking fool for going to Skye right now, they have just had their first confirmed case of Covid 19 and the last thing they need is some goon who has just taken an international flight turning up

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/05/2020 17:52

neil is a cock lodger for leaving a relationship with a four year old child involved

Er, clock lodgers don't leave though, (the clue is in the name).

1066vegan · 04/05/2020 17:53

I like Neil Gaiman's books and voice (he's a great reader of his own books) but don't have any knowledge of or opinion about him as a person.

I had to Google AP. Followed the link above to her patreon page where she made the announcement. Bloody hell. I know I should be more sympathetic because breakups are awful to go through, but what a load of waffle. I certainly won't be following her on twitter if that's how she usually writes. And she needs to learn how to punctuate. I've taught 5 year olds who do a better job of starting their sentences with a capital letter.

Dyrne · 04/05/2020 17:54

SunshineDays2019 Fair enough, and I guess your post didn’t really do it as much as others, but why feel the need to declare it on here? Why not just google and go “oh the bloke who wrote the books behind that BBC series and those films” I mean, Stardust the film was a critical point in human history really as it reignited Take That’s careers; surely everyone would recognise the genius that masterminded it all? Grin

blueglassandfreesias · 04/05/2020 17:56

I simply don’t care one bit of anyone on Mumsnet thinks of me as distasteful/ odd for being interested in the marriage breakdown of two people who I find interesting!

RedPanda2 · 04/05/2020 17:57

I'm sure she'll tour with a tell all album. Kickstarter funded, of course

blueglassandfreesias · 04/05/2020 17:59

It was NG who encouraged her to ask because he probably wanted to protect his own finances.

I can't comment on the age thing as I'm 31 and I've been reading his books since I was a teenager.

But he mainly writes fantasy. Not so much science fiction although there might be a tiny bit of overlap in places.

SpokeTooSoon · 04/05/2020 18:00

Neil Gaiman has only come to my attention fairly recently having watched an episode of Big Bang Theory and my son requesting a book of his because his friend did his book report about it. So I’m familiar with him now, but wasn’t until a few months ago. Once I research him I realised he is considered a big deal in the sci-fi world.

Never heard of his wife.

I totally understand how people get over-invested in famous though. Right now I can’t stop thinking about Kate Garraway’s husband who is very ill with Covid. I don’t know Kate but I do know Derek as an aquaintance. Nothing more. Worrying for her a lot even though I don’t know her. It happens. We make connections with people when they touch our lives in some way. Even if they don’t know it.

Sarahandco · 04/05/2020 18:02

Being stranded in New Zealand would be fantastic!

DarkDarkNight · 04/05/2020 18:02

I know of Neil Gaiman and like his work, The Wolves in the Walls is one of my Son’s fave books. Genuinely never heard of Amanda Palmer and a quick look at her Twitter puts me right off her.

Whatever has gone on is between them but he has asked for privacy and she is very obviously looking for sympathy and trying to muck-rake whilst also asking for privacy. ‘To everyone sending me messages of support, rage & condolences’ who is sending her messages of rage. Some fans are so over-invested in the lives of famous people they admire.

coronabeer23 · 04/05/2020 18:04

There you go, I dislike sci-fi and fantasy and I even dislike Harry Potter so it’s no huge surprise that his works have passed me by, they wouldn’t come on to my radar.

ContessaferJones · 04/05/2020 18:05

As one of the three people on Britain who's heard of either person Wink I am sad to hear this. I do suspect that they are mutually hard work as people, though.

BillywigSting · 04/05/2020 18:06

I'm not particularly sad about tbh.

Gaiman is a great writer but he comes across as hideously self important on Twitter.

Amanda isn't exactly a shrinking violet either.

It's really not anyone's business but theirs though

fuckinghellthisshit · 04/05/2020 18:08

They are both massively attention seeking over hyped wanna be celebrities who squandered their considerable talents for twitter points. Who cares.

bringbacksideburns · 04/05/2020 18:17

I had no idea and I was following her. Shows you how fast I can scroll on by sometimes Confused

I love her songs The Bed and Delilah.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 04/05/2020 18:25

I’m not familiar with her except as NG’s OH, but he’s got one of those public personae which encourages his fans to think of him as one of them, so I can see where the OP is coming from - my knee jerk reaction was “Oh no! Sad” just as if they were friends of mine.

dworky · 04/05/2020 18:37

Surely if the relationship was one sided, as you state, you should be relieved for her?

Chrestomanciscat · 04/05/2020 18:39

I don't think yabu. I'm pretty invested too, I follow them both on twitter so every day they kind of pop into your conciousness. I love his books - always have, so I keep an eye on his projects. I just think it's sad and She's left looking after their son on her own. I do wonder what happened though, just can't help it!

BuildTheBobber · 04/05/2020 18:42

I like both of their art (though AP is turning into a bit of a caricature of herself recently), but I can't bring myself to care too much about the marriage breakdown. Just feel for the kid, mostly.

ilikebooksandplants · 04/05/2020 18:46

@KotoMoto I’m 31 (much like the other person who replied to you!) but you originally replied to my comment so I’ll bite. He’s been famous for donkeys years.

There’s no such thing as an ‘over 40s’ book. Catch on, that’s a completely foolish thing to say.

It isn’t sci-fi, either. If anything, I would say fantasy but I would also say some of his books span different genres. Hence why I was so surprised a lot of people were like ‘who?’

bee222 · 04/05/2020 18:49

Amanda is a pretty awful person to be fair. Her insistence on using the n word repeatedly in her songs (And her refusal to apologise for this) and her long time harassment and near stalking behaviour towards Laura Snapes (because she didn’t give her a 5 star review) just the tip of the iceberg.
Neil is an utter tool though so I always thought they were perfect for each other.
