To be really sad that Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman have separated.

Officially cabin fevered now but I have followed both of their careers and always felt slightly that Neil Gaiman held all the power since AP had their child 4 years ago. She posts often about how much she loves him, he never does this.
They were in lockdown in New Zealand together then suddenly he left to hid house in Scotland.
I feel really sorry for her stuck in a country with their child, heartbroken and unable to face to face sort it all out with her husband.

People are acting like 'lockdown' is a prison sentence complete with jailers and wardens. Flights are still running. Relationship breakdown is a reason to move.

480Widdio · 04/05/2020 17:29

I voted YABU as I have never heard of either of them.

Macncheeseballs · 04/05/2020 17:30

Ok so I just had to Google her cos I feel I need to wade in with my opinion in these lockdown times, especially people I know little about, and I've come down on her side, she says she's heartbroken and unless she's a complete and utter nightmare to live with, neil is a cock lodger for leaving a relationship with a four year old child involved.

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 17:30

she always seemed to be cap in hand and worrying about money

She likes to portray herself as the starving artist. Doesn't mean she's poor - she clearly has plenty of money.

FliesandPies · 04/05/2020 17:32

I really can't get aeriated over this..

Aeriated! Good lord, I haven't heard that since about 1982..definitely going to start using it again..

C8H10N4O2 · 04/05/2020 17:34

Yes, I wondered whether he was one of those older dads who wasn’t as invested in having the whole family things as perhaps she was

You do know he already has 3 adult children?

Puddington · 04/05/2020 17:34

Exactly, and her patreon has over 15,000 patrons -- even if each of them was only paying $1 a month that's a VAST amount of money and doesn't take into account any money she makes from other sources. I've always found her unbearable but they seemed well-matched (he's a great writer but ALSO became quite annoying over time).

Jodri · 04/05/2020 17:35

An end of a relationship is most always sad especially when there is a child, so my sympathies go out to them.

I have enjoyed lots of Neil Gaiman’s work since I discovered The Sandman in the 90s (is a bit dated now though! I saw two aged goths in my local supermarket once and it reminded me of the books).
He can be brilliant; Loved Coraline, good omens, stardust, neverwhere etc. But American gods was crap I couldn’t finish it, a very masculine road trip.
Don’t really know Amanda Palmer’s work with the Dresden dolls.

I’m sure I read he was/is a Scientologist, maybe that explains a lot,
and recently (before lockdown) didn’t he say that they had an open relationship and he was attracted to curvy dark haired women and that this was quite different to Amanda? Her normal type was different to Neil gaiman too. I thought who cares? what a strange thing to say.

MarieQueenofScots · 04/05/2020 17:35

It's fairly tasteless to speculate as to the issues in other's marriages, especially as they've asked for privacy (which I'm sure you know as you've "followed their careers")

blueglassandfreesias · 04/05/2020 17:36

What are you doing on here then queen of Scots!? Lol!

OP posts:
WombOfOnesOwn · 04/05/2020 17:37

Do you have a source on the split? I did some quick Googling and didn't see anything, where are you getting this news? I don't doubt you, I was just hoping for a link!

JasonPollack · 04/05/2020 17:37

I find him such an overrated author.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 04/05/2020 17:38

Who🙄🙄?? Sounds like scotland may have a leggy blonde in waiting. Shes probably over the moon and eyeing up the gardener 😜😜

MarieQueenofScots · 04/05/2020 17:38

What on a public forum?

Well what happens is, you see a thread and enter the discussion. You can then read said discussion and you respond as to your own opinions.

My opinion is that speculating over people you don't know (although profess to like...) is incredibly gauche.

I'm not speculating on their marriage which is, quite frankly, none of my business.

Does it need to be clearer?

I’m loving all the people falling all over themselves to proclaim they’ve never heard of them. Think some people wanted to score intellectual points thinking these were reality tv stars, only for it to backfire on them when it turns out they are an author and an artist that have been around donkey’s years Grin

And I never understand why people get all sniffy about people starting threads about meaningless bullshit. Isn’t that what MN is for?!?

Is that you AP ?

Why be so invested otherwise ?

panicstationsready · 04/05/2020 17:44

Good Omens is my favourite ever book - never heard of her!!

Winterwoollies · 04/05/2020 17:45

I’m with you @blueglassandfreesias they’re both legends. I LOVE Neil Gaiman. I read Good Omens at least once a year.

Etinox · 04/05/2020 17:46

Mind blown (and slightly put back together) as I thought you meant NG was married to Amanda off of BGT.

Winterwoollies · 04/05/2020 17:46

@Dyrne you are so right. I think people thought they were trashy ‘stars’. 😆

Nancydrawn · 04/05/2020 17:47

I really, really don't like performative relationships. She has made her own life into her art (and vice-versa), which is facile at best. I know a great many artists, in all media, and the truly spectacular ones are able to draw important boundaries around their art. (I am not excusing him herehe is also very public about the privatebut her life is her art.)

Her social media posts about the divorce are distasteful. Not because she wants to sharethat's her prerogativebut because she wants to monetize them. To speak about heartbreak in one sentence and to give a link to a patreon in the next is gross.

I have also never forgiven her for raising over a million on Kickstarter and then asking other artists to give their labor without any compensation. It's predatory.

All that said, I am sorry to hear that anyone is heartbroken, and I am particularly sorry for their child.

SunshineDays2019 · 04/05/2020 17:49

No Dyrne, I had NO idea who they were, and asked genuinely. Didn't assume reality tv or try to "score intellectual points". How odd of you to think that Hmm
