To worry when My friend says she's a light worker??

sttropezlegs · 04/05/2020 08:50

Name changed, but frequent poster.

Close friend of mine has started a fbook group and invited me in. In this group she has started doing videos and appears to have a number of followers now. In this group and in videos she claims to speak to spirit guides (including princess diana!!) and calls herself a light worker

I have never heard her talk of any of this before. We live a far distance apart so granted, most interaction between us is virtual so it is fair to say, I don't know all that's going on with her and don't claim to. She's just never mentioned anything like this before. We speak weekly, sometimes more.

This area is something I know nothing about, and I'm worried by the videos.

Is this a real thing?

I would be worried. When someone who has been feeling vulnerable suddenly gets involved with some weird woo group, you should be.

Also Princess Diana is not a freaking spirit guide, let her rest in peace FFS

NearlyGranny · 04/05/2020 15:10

Well, who doesn't find it difficult to deal with angry and aggressive people and need time alone to 'dlecompress'?

Clearly, we're all lightworkers. 😏

1forAll74 · 04/05/2020 15:19

You often hear of some people who have gone into a different life mode such as this. The decide to have some alternative views on life, and then get in contact with like minded people, of which there are many on the internet now.

It is quite difficult to befriend the spiritual people if it's not your vibe, as lots of people think it's all mumbo jumbo stuff..

ittakes2 · 04/05/2020 15:27

Being a light worker is a real thing but it’s weird she has not told you before. Anyone I know who is a light worker is very into it and it forms an important part of their lives so not something they keep secret.

Anonymouswasawoman · 04/05/2020 15:59

If she is summoning Gandhi from the dead, can you tell her to tell him to go fuck himself for being such a huge misogynist, by the way?

sttropezlegs · 04/05/2020 16:05

Some of these replies are just brilliant Grin

I think I will do as suggested, tell her it's not my bag but continue our friendship, letting her know I'm here if she needs me (and maybe keep a subtle eye on things)

On a side note, do you think, she thinks she can actually HEAR Diana???

Poor old Di and Ghandi.
Imagine arriving in the afterlife to find you’ve been selected to live perpetually propping up the cosmic customer service centre.

Cressless · 04/05/2020 16:14

Look, OP, it's Religion Lite for the kind of credulous people who think that finding a feather is a sign from an angel/Higher Being/departed relative, rather than just that there's a pigeon in their garden.

SamVimesFavouriteDragon · 04/05/2020 16:19

Wilma 😂😂😂

sttropezlegs · 04/05/2020 16:20

Someone else in the group channelled Amy Winehouse at the weekend, I can't imagine what guidance she brought Hmm

OP posts:
MangoFeverDream · 04/05/2020 16:22

I do feel like this sort of new age spirituality gets mostly ridicule but mainstream religion which causes way more harm and dogmatic closed minded thinking is treated with kid gloves. If your friend found Jesus would you be posting on here embarrassed on her behalf?

It actually sounds like her friend is getting scammed (how much do these courses cost?) and will likely join in the scam so I think it’s very different situation than joining an established religion that doesn’t really require much at all from you.

Pollaidh · 04/05/2020 16:30

After the mass deaths in WW1 and Spanish Flu many very distressed people turned to the occult as a way to try to cope/connect with the dead etc... And back then con artists used it to scam people too.

Could you offer her emotional support and try to draw her away from the influence of these people? She may be turning to them because she's lost her usual support on top of her relationship.

NewYearNewTwatName · 04/05/2020 17:14

These aren't the training courses prices.

These are prices given out to people who reach out to them when they are obviously very distressed and want help.

Please note – some people look for solutions for dark energies as it is out there and sometimes you are troubled by it. We do not offer any heavy spirit release work to a total stranger so please book the first assessment and healing session from here after you read the details and agree

We love woo in this household. We also love Derren Brown and science. And I've been enjoying Devs on iPlayer though I might have to watch the whole blooming thing again due to what you find out at the end about the story.

I've done various things over the years, mainly for entertainment and often as something like a meditation circle, and I've encountered a lot of charlatans, sadly. At its best, the group meditations and retreats can be healing and harmonious, like a Quaker ceremony. At its worst, it's a money-making scam, packed full of people with egos bigger than those in politics. I'm very, very suspicious of those who charge huge amounts for their courses; everyone has to earn a living, but at the "top end" I fail to see how they're much different from the wacky (and wealthy!) megapastors you find in places like Florida.

I've even seen trends come and go in spirit guides, though for the last couple of decades it has tended to be either Chinese sages or Native Americans full of peace and wisdom.

Unless it's something that's got at least a little bit of science/evidence base behind it, however pink and fluffy (massage therapy, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, quantum physics etc - yes, I know that one's not pink and fluffy. More purple and spiky and many-pronged), then I'd say approach with care. It'll start with crystals and it'll end with people raising demons and forgetting to send them back....

If they're not trying to wheedle money out of her or convince her she's something she's not, I'd be a little less concerned. And if she really wants to get involved with light-working, there are some very decent churches and established faith groups out there, many of which are doing absolute sterling work at the moment. Here on Planet Earth, not out in the ether and talking to Gandhi. Though I'm sure he's got an awful lot to say on the state of Planet Earth right now. Wondering how he'd handle COVID-19?

MintyMabel · 04/05/2020 20:21

OK then, next time someone comes on here to say their child has bone cancer, let's see you come on to tell them their child has attracted it into their life, no doubt by putting out the wrong vibes.

My dad went to some seminar or other and came back convinced DD would be able to walk, if she only just thought about it hard and imagined herself doing it. Like that was going to repair her brain damage.

But I guess I'm just not open minded enough, I just need to get her to think disability away.

This is really awful, to make someone think (your dad) that it's all down to thinking it away or attracting negatives. Many of us will just realise people who suggest this are idiots who haven't really thought through what they are saying or maybe just downright nasty.... wait until they become ill - imagine someone suggesting their cancer etc was down to them attracting it and merely thinking it away and positives thoughts would be the cure.... dangerous and frankly I find people who suggest this disgusting.

Sunflowersok · 05/05/2020 11:21

What you are doing is you are judging your ‘friend’ for her beliefs and her way of life. If she believes she has been put on this earth to be a light worker (especially after going through painful life events) she has finally found something that gives her joy and purpose.

If you don’t believe in it, then keep your distance and don’t get involved in her business. Think about your actions and how she would feel if she read this thread.

MintyMabel · 05/05/2020 12:05

you completely misunderstood my post, in fact, but it doesn't matter

I actually didn’t, but it doesn’t matter.

I am interested, though, in all seriousness, what has science proved about football? Are you talking game tactics or proving that it is pointless crap (or not)?

There are hundreds of scientific studies about football, looking at pretty much every aspect of the game.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 05/05/2020 12:38

To the poster a couple up the thread Sunflowersok

We are judging/giving an opinion on whether we believe she/they can talk to Gandi/Princess Di - why shouldn't we.... when people make ridiculous claims like that.....
There appears to be a growing industry in teaching people to learn how to channel/talk to dead people.... so since charging for courses to learn this then again we have a right to have if we wish an opinion on it.
Making claims like this "Lightworkers, also known as star seeds, Earth angels, and Indigos, are spiritual beings in human existence sent here to heal. I am a lightworker, and you may be too. As lightworkers, we each have a purpose or mission to complete. This is the reason we incarnated on the Earthly plane.".... healing - then again we can challenge that healing and ask for evidence of said healing ... vulnerable people may miss a scientifically proven treatment to visit one of these healers instead.... some may genuinely believe that they can heal by touch/thinking etc but proof as in results scientifically tested not my next door neighbours, sisters bingo caller said....

Dozer · 05/05/2020 12:38

OP isn’t judging her friend for beliefs or choices about her own life. She seems concerned for her friend’s wellbeing, and perhaps judging her friend for participating in scams, that harm others.

Her1mum · 05/05/2020 17:37

I'd be embarrassed for her and just quietly leave the group.

Malbecqueen · 05/05/2020 17:39

I'm deeply spiritual. I believe in an awful lot of alternative stuff that probably doesn't cross most people's mind. I have used tarot readers and psychics - some are great and some are useless.

I am deeply sceptical of people who channel Diana or claim to have been Cleopatra in a past life or similar... In fact, I loathe the term lightworker...

BUT there are numerous genuine spiritual paths that she might well be one. Take a look at Hay House publishers to get an idea of the sheer volume of different perspectives that she might be exploring.

And the full-on "OMG, Diana is talking to me" can be part of early stages in the journey without her being involved in a dangerous cult or a con-artist. It's rather that she's embarked on this path wholeheartedly without discernment and she genuinely believes that she has gifts that she can use to help people - and she may well have.

If you like her and want to keep her friendship, I'd encourage you to ask her questions about how she has found this path and her beliefs - then you can make up your own mind about where she's at.

Scarriff · 05/05/2020 17:43

I think many posting on here don't know what a lightworker might be, and choose not to be interested. I guess your friend has begun a spiritual journey which might include meditation, study, retreats and visualisation. She won't do any harm and ahe may do good. If its not your thing, you dont have to join her social media circle. Thank her for her offer and wish her well.

Jezebel101 · 05/05/2020 17:46

She's either been conned or is conning.

I knew someone who went to the police with a location for a missing (presumed murdered) persons remains, and told them the husband did it. She knew this because her spirit guide (from ancient Greece, but with a French name - she wasn't good with languages) told her so.

Anyway it turned out that it was someone else entirely beyond doubt, and that the person who was killed was mixed up in some very dangerous stuff. Didn't put her off. Next time someone was killed, she was off to the police again, only this time it was a child and she was blaming the father. It wasn't the father, but she continued to maintain it was until she was told she could be sued for defamation. The horror of accusing a parent of the killing of their child and the pain that would cause was lost on her. I honestly believe she just looked for attention. She was a recovering alcoholic (and this is just incidental, as most recovering addicts of any kind are in no way like this) and this became a sort of replacement for the time she had previously spent drinking with her old circle.

Last I heard of her she was giving Tarot readings and the occasional Angel reading (whatever the fuck that is), and accepting donations for her time.

I can't decide if she was genuinely delusional as I suspect she had a lot of childhood stuff going on, but to some degree she was definitely a con artist and of course I am nothing but a close-minded skeptic because I want to be cool and can't accept that faeries may exist because I'm so dead inside.

Worry about your friend, OP. And worry about who she's preying on too.

Jezebel101 · 05/05/2020 17:50

Oh, to add to that, she's exceptionally lazy and declared that she and her son were Indigo child or a rainbow child, can't remember which was which. The son was a nightmare having never once been disciplined, and once punched a 8 month old in the face hard enough to leave a bruise, but this was apparently because he recognised evil in the baby.
