To worry when My friend says she's a light worker??

sttropezlegs · 04/05/2020 08:50

Name changed, but frequent poster.

Close friend of mine has started a fbook group and invited me in. In this group she has started doing videos and appears to have a number of followers now. In this group and in videos she claims to speak to spirit guides (including princess diana!!) and calls herself a light worker

I have never heard her talk of any of this before. We live a far distance apart so granted, most interaction between us is virtual so it is fair to say, I don't know all that's going on with her and don't claim to. She's just never mentioned anything like this before. We speak weekly, sometimes more.

This area is something I know nothing about, and I'm worried by the videos.

Is this a real thing?

@1555CC The law of attraction as a money making scheme is flawed and not something I've contributed towards, I'm not giving it 'credence' but there is a simplified truth in the the idea that you attract in to your life what you put out.

OK then, next time someone comes on here to say their child has bone cancer, let's see you come on to tell them their child has attracted it into their life, no doubt by putting out the wrong vibes.

Ffs!!!!!

polymathsruled · 04/05/2020 11:44

I would worry if my friend was talking about seances with the famous people, and I would assume that she was going through a difficult time and being manipulated, and would try to talk to them and warn them of what might go wrong.

However, some of these posts are a bit misleading as you can be a spiritual person and also very in touch with reality. For example, someone in touch with reality would look to good science and good medicine and economics in relation to the virus, but might also at the same time and not in a conflicting way still be spiritual. Anyone who is spiritual may find various spiritual things therapeutic - but - not so much if it involves money changing hands or seances with dead famous people. So spirituality is not in itself a sign of anything bad, but anything to do with money changing hands or seances with famous dead people would ring alarm bells for me.

BertieBotts · 04/05/2020 11:49

My mum is a "light worker" too and it's extremely cult like, it's quite frightening TBH. It makes her happy but it's got in the way of our relationship because I struggle with her just being in thrall to so much random stuff that doesn't make any sense. It feels like the emporers new clothes! We have come to an agreement and try to stick to other topics but she's just away with the fairies (from her pov: literally) most of the time, and it's difficult.

GCAcademic · 04/05/2020 11:51

My first instinct is it's a load of bollocks. But wanted to get some more opinions before I raised this point of view with her

Good luck with that. I don't imagine it's a point of view which is likely to go down well with someone who's embraced talking to the dead.

Is she taking questions for tonight's conversation with Gandhi? I'd love to know (though I can imagine) what he thinks of President Modi and the state of Indian politics today. Can you put in a request?

lockdownstress · 04/05/2020 11:55

They're talking to Ghandi tonight

by zoom or does he prefer Skype?!

OVienna · 04/05/2020 12:00

It could be a form of distraction, given how difficult things are at the moment. People do respond to things in different ways.

I am assuming she is quite a good friend. I think all I would do at the moment is watch and wait. Try to find out more, by speaking to her, how she got into it all but try to do so in a way that she won't feel defensive. I'd be trying to find out if she is really mentally distressed at the moment and feels this is an answer, almost like self-medicating, or if perhaps she is worried about finances and trying this on for size. Or maybe it's just entertainment!

It sounds like you might not yet know enough to conclude what is going on here.

I am guessing that you will not be the only person with these concerns, though.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 04/05/2020 12:12

If they are talking to Ghandi tonight, can you find out if he's going to make another film?

MintyMabel · 04/05/2020 12:12

there's a huge difference between not being interested in anything alternative, and mocking it ALL without any knowledge whatsoever and using somebody else's more open mind as an excuse to pigeon-hole them as a hippy.

And yet anyone who states they aren’t interested in any of it is accused of being closed minded.

I think it’s all a load of bollocks, scientific research is on my side on this, so no, I’m not about to waste my time investigating every new money making snake oil scam on the off chance this one is real, because I have better things to do. It doesn’t make me closed minded, and more than deciding I’m not going to watch every football game to decide if I’m right in thinking that’s a load of pointless crap too.

SliAnCroix · 04/05/2020 12:18

I only listed it as one of a number of things I"d be open to, open meaning I would find out more about this before I mocked it.

Several people have attacked me for this comment. Open to does not mean 'out there promoting' but some people aren't making that distinction.

Over and out on this thread now.

Traviis · 04/05/2020 12:27

I have a recurring dilemma. I am an extremely good Tarot reader, people love my readings and often tell me I should go in to business offering it.
The problem is, I don't believe in it. I loved learning the cards, found it very enjoyable in the same way that I find learning about most things (I've done similar with the periodic table for example). I enjoy interpreting the cards in different positions. It'd be good money compared with how I make my living. But ethically I don't think I can square it.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 04/05/2020 12:29

I have a facebook friend who works as a medium/psychic and does readings. She did a course and suddenly can see things/feel things and talk to long gone relatives.

She makes a good living out of it. Charges £30 for 30 minutes of her waffling on.

She is a con artist and preys on the vulnerable is one way of looking at it (my way). Others say that it makes them feel good to 'know' that their relatives are safe in the afterworld ! - it's their money and if they feel 'happy' hearing that then so be it.

It's a growing industry!

NearlyGranny · 04/05/2020 12:42

She's either been conned or is part of a con, OP. Either way, whatever she may call you, get your bargepole out and introduce distance. I suspect it's a tempting side hustle for some, but there are always victims.

Let's never forget that Diana consulted her own regular medium in the days before her death. The medium didn't see it coming and warn her to wear her seat belt!

I am a person of faith and believe in an afterlife but if I get there and find I'm expected to spend it sitting around waiting to take calls from people like your friend I'll be pretty cheesed off! I hope I'll have better things to do.

Why not ask your friend to ask Diana, Ghandi et al why they didn't all come through and warn us about Covid19 so health services could stock up on PPE in good time? That should shut the conversation down effectively.

OVienna · 04/05/2020 12:44

polymathsruled · 04/05/2020 12:45

It doesn’t make me closed minded, and more than deciding I’m not going to watch every football game to decide if I’m right in thinking that’s a load of pointless crap too I am deeply shocked that you could say this about football. Science hasn't proved anything about football.

Or about spiritual matters for that matter and many leading scientists also have spiritual beliefs which are quite separate from their comprehension of scientific principles though I imagine not many will have seances with dead famous people or pay for readings, granted. Crossed out as I know you will have difficulty believing this and I can't be bothered to argue about it

Rhubardandcustard · 04/05/2020 12:45

Each to their own. Does sounds culty but I wouldn’t cut off a friendship because of this.

Just contact her to say you aren’t into what she is and not to contact you regarding it but you happy to be there for her on anything else.

MintyMabel · 04/05/2020 13:06

Science hasn't proved anything about football

It actually has.

But I wouldn’t expect you to understand that, given your lack of understanding of the difference between a study of and a belief in something.

I lived with a scientist who did animal research, who was a vegan and didn’t believe animals should be used for research. Private views are irrelevant in science.

polymathsruled · 04/05/2020 13:24

@mintymabel you completely misunderstood my post, in fact, but it doesn't matter - for the avoidance of doubt I agree with you that study of and belief in are two different things, I was making a similar point. I am interested, though, in all seriousness, what has science proved about football? Are you talking game tactics or proving that it is pointless crap (or not)?

NewYearNewTwatName · 04/05/2020 13:46

just googled it.

yeah it definitely calls to people who have gone through lots of shit and are probably feeling low and vulnerable. Promises them they are special and a higher being, here to save everyone else, its give a great for instilling delusions of grandeur. which can be found in a recommend book, called, How to activate your manifesting super powers.

a few quotes from my google search

Life becomes a harsh training ground for a Lightworker so that they can be of the highest service to mankind. Many Lightworkers have lived a lot of life in a short period of time. Their lives are beautifully decorated with loss, sadness, illness, depression, anxiety and fear so that they can live and teach how to navigate through the uncertainty of life and be living proof of walking the talk

Lightworkers are power manifestors

A Lightworker knows how to use their thoughts to create their own reality. They know how to trust implicitly in the process of manifesting and understand that whatever shows up is meant to happen

Remember: Divine timing never gets it wrong

there are so many red flags I could fill pages with quotes I've found.

NewYearNewTwatName · 04/05/2020 13:58

A sense of being an outsider

Lightworkers often have a strong sense that they're different. That although they're a human being, they really don't belong here on Earth. This can manifest as a feeling of otherness, isolation, or even homesickness. Lightworkers may often feel that they are on the outside looking in. Many lightworkers have a deep underlying feeling of “wanting to go home”

High sensitivity

Lightworkers are driven to understand the world better by seeking out extreme experiences. With this experience comes great empathy, which causes them to feel what others feel very deeply

Along with this, lightworkers have a stronger sensitivity to the energies around them. They are especially sensitive to negativity, and it wears on them. It may be difficult for them to deal with people who are angry or aggressive

As a result of this drain on their energy, lightworkers have a need for frequent time alone so they can decompress and recover

not at all cultish at all Hmm

beeinmygarden · 04/05/2020 14:16

I actually was told this once, about my gran. She had a terror of cancer and died of it. I was told she had attracted the cancer due to her fear of it. I find that a disgusting, offensive thing to say to anyone.

NewYear I don't find that cultish, so much as a strange conclusion to draw from a common personality type, that one is a 'light worker'. It's very common to feel a sense of being an outsider, to strongly feel what others feel, to need time alone to decompress, to find it difficult to deal with aggression.
I can identify with all of that and I know a lot of other people can too.
Probably quite normal for people on the introvert personality side.

NewYearNewTwatName · 04/05/2020 14:21

Easy to find all the courses and tests you will pay for to become a true lightworker.

obviously you can't just be taught any of this for free, even though they are shining divine lights sent here to enlighten humanity. they ain't a fucking charity

and of course one course wouldn't possibly be enough, stepped courses are a must, but first you need to take 3000 year old test to see if you do have powers locked in you. The test will also awaken these powers.

NewYearNewTwatName · 04/05/2020 14:25

beeinmygarden precisely they use a common trait to draw people in. most cults use these sort of tactics.

people who are vulnerable and have the outsider feeling want to feel they belong somewhere. Cults tell them they understand them and they belong with them.

JudyCoolibar · 04/05/2020 14:39

How open minded are you to the fact that she's a con artist?

I'd be worried that she could be a con victim, not a con artist. Can you at least get through to her that if anyone is asking for or taking money she needs to step back?

JudyCoolibar · 04/05/2020 14:42

It's always Diana, isn't it? She must be very busy

At least Ghandi's giving her an evening off. She probably needs it if she's been keeping an eye on Harry.
