Ok so I’m 35, I need to start taking better care of my skin.
So far this is what I’m starting this week-
Cleanse face,
Toner (rose water toner)
Retinol serum
Olay anti wrinkle night cream (For evening) and the day one with spf 30 for day.

So turns out I need to use eye cream as well?? Seriously?? Ugh. But ok, if needs must..
so, can anyone recommend an eye cream they love? Or is it unnecessary?

Dappled......yessssssss madness isnt it. Just wash your face and get out more in the sunlight ha ha.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 11:11

"TabbyMumzwell yes those children’s parents should have been supplementing them with vitamin d?"
For gods sake, they shouldn't have to.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 11:13

Then dappled, apparently should should also be dosing your children ip with vitamins too. Who knew? I always thought diet and sunshine was best!!

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 11:14

Hang on. Have I got this right? It is advocated that women use retinol, which makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so to combat that you use SPF every day but then to combat that the SPF means you don't get enough vitamin D you take a further supplement?

Bonkers, isn't it?

The beauty industry is laughing all the way to the bank.

DappledThings · 04/05/2020 11:16

The beauty industry is laughing all the way to the bank

Yep! Almost as hard as I'm laughing at the names of some of the products mentioned. There has to be some kind of industry competition to soo how daft and cod-sciencey they can make this stuff sound and people will still buy it.

motherheroic · 04/05/2020 11:19

I've recently dropped the toner and chemical exfloliation from my routine because I felt like it wasn't working.

Went back to exfoliating with a washcloth and I was correct because my skin is doing so much better.

So I use a washcloth and water in the morning then moisturise/sunscreen.

Then I cleanse in the evening and moisturise. That's it.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 04/05/2020 11:19

Ha fair point there

Isn’t it funny how everyone has been conned into this retinol malarkey

Yes indeed

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 11:20

I must have saved literally thousands over the years, in money, and time.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 11:24

I remember when I stopped using it all. I thought hang on, I'm using a toner to deep cleanse, then conditioner, then moisturiser. I was in my twenties, didnt need any of it!!! I've noticed more recently when my daughter and her friends started using it all and then makeup, their skin all went downhill. They started getting little spots and rashes round where the foundation was. My daughter started not using it, and her skin looks fresh again.

ClientQ · 04/05/2020 11:37

Am
Boots botanics all bright cleanser
Superdrug simply pure serum
Alpha H essential hydration cream
Body shop SPF 50

Pm
Whatever balm type cleanser I have
Sometimes acids, otherwise a hydrating toner
Prescription tret OR murad revitalixir serum
Ceramide gel cream

Occasionally I use an oil at night, depends how my skin feels and what it needs. Never physically exfoliate

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 11:42

The biggest laugh is micellar water.....its literally water...with a dab of caster oil and a dab of lemon. They stick a garnier label on it and sell loads of it.

ClientQ · 04/05/2020 11:42

And I would use SPF all year round if I didn't use retinol still
I burn in 10 mins, my mum has dark skin but had skin cancer. Vitamin D is fine as I'm a redhead and I can expose my arms etc which are less sensitive

It doesn't always follow with vitamin D though - my friend is outside 7 days a week, all day (I'm talking 8am - 5pm) and only wears SPF in v warm weather. She's deficient and needs supplements

stopgap · 04/05/2020 12:24

AM Barbara Sturm cleanser, Dr Hausckha moisturizer, La Mer eye gel

PM Barbara Sturm cleanser, LED face mask for 20 minutes, Tazorac (prescription retinoid), two layers of Dr Hauschka moisturizer, La Mer eye gel.

stopgap · 04/05/2020 12:27

^Also SPF 45 when 60 degrees or more.

AriadneCrete · 04/05/2020 13:24

@MouthBreathingRage some of the names are ridiculous! Although I find the sex obsessed make up names (Orgasm, Better Than Sex, Deep Throat etc) even worse!

Those of you who find it exhausting just looking at the routines on here really shouldn't. It really doesn't take that long- less than 5 minutes. I'm more astonished at the people who think make up can be removed with just water!

@TabbyMumz (good) micellar water is much more than caster oil and lemon. But you're right the Garnier one is awful.

Panda368 · 04/05/2020 13:32

Day
Ordinary squaline cleanser
Ordinary buffet
Simple moisturiser
Spf before leaving house

Night

  • squaline cleanser
  • alternate ordinary buffet syrum OR ordinary 0.2 retinol
Or
  • superdrug glycolic tonic
Followed by the same moisturiser as daytime.

I probably use the retinol 1x a week and same with glycolic. I'm pretty nervous about sun sensitivity as I'm a natural born burner. I will probably stop using the retinol as the weather gets warmer

SerenDippitty · 04/05/2020 13:46

Morning - splash face with water in shower, moisturise with Olay ProVital SPF15

Night - cleanse with Elemis pro collagen cleansing balm that I was given for Christmas (if I can be arsed), Olay ProVital night cream.

Never exfoliate or use face packs.

TheCanterburyWhales · 04/05/2020 15:15

Micellar water is very Emperor's new clothes, I agree. It's also not actually very good, either at removing make up or for your skin. But it's quick, so it's become fashionable.

I'm a skincare whore. I admit it. I have about 20 serums, the cheapest was the £2.99 Superdrug Pure one. The most expensive the EL ANR. Guess which one is a repeat purchase and which languishes at the back of the bathroom cabinet with me thinking "that was £70 I'll not get back"

I fell for the Ordinary hype (probably not least because of the hours their PR bods spend on MN doing their product placement (and yes, Hush, Mint Velvet and Saltwater, that goes for you too)) but it did nothing for my skin, generally has a nasty consistency and I read too much about the way the guy running the show ran the show to be taken in by their ethical this and price point that stuff.

I love L'Occitane Divine. Does it make my skin look better than Astral? Nope.

Things that have made my skin look different:
Acid toner-. Doesn't have to be a Paula's Choice (I think old Paula isn't averse to sending her bods onto skincare threads either) one of the best I've used is Olay anti wrinkle. £4.99 last bottle.

Vit C serum. I have a Vichy one and repeat buy it but also have a GOW one I haven't opened yet that cost half what the Vichy did.

Any cream cleanser you remove with a hot cloth will do the same job. I like Liz Earle because I like the smell, but I'm not gullible enough to think a cream you splodge on your face for 10 seconds then rinse off is doing anything that the £3 Superdrug one isn't. It's the actual cloth action that brightens, not the cream.

Eye cream- some/most Emperor's new clothes again. I've used Dior, Chanel etc and nope. Nothing. But I am using a couple of Kiehl's ones at the moment and can see a brightening and less obvious lines.

Imapotato · 04/05/2020 15:40

Clean and clear face wash and Lidl £1.99 day cream.

Works for me, I’m nearly 35 and have hardly any wrinkles, just a few little laughter lines and my skin is pretty youthful really. Still get a few bloody spots!
But I’m hoping oily skin = slower ageing?

Gobbolinocat · 04/05/2020 15:47

I've never really done skin care and I 🤔 sometimes pulling and wiping and prodding the face is counter productive. I've been very blessed with good genes! I've been told I've a young looking face. The most I've done is slash with water.. And occasionally moisturise.

However about 3 years ago I noticed my knees looked awful.
I never thought I'd get them back to normal!
So I started to take more notice about body and moisturiser because... It did eventually start to work but took months!

I started mix of e45 cream, super drug face oil...

And then a friend gave me an expensive face freshener thing este lauder and it's worked. I don't know what it is, it was 50 but you put it on before special night and it brighten the face!

So i thought maybe things have changed now there is better science?

So i invested in nigella lawson recommended prickly pear oil and something hydrochloric or something as well.
More recently I tried half price olay stuff but it sits on the skin?
Short answer.
All I do now is water wash and moisturise
But I won't be buying the olay again.

I love the prickly pear.

Nosuchluck · 04/05/2020 15:55

I really like micellar water.

HopelessLayout · 04/05/2020 18:02

The best skin care doesn't involve slapping 6 layers of expensive stuff on your face three times a day.

Stay out of the sun
Don't smoke
Don't drink too much alcohol
Drink water
Eat a varied diet with adequate fat
Skin supplements such as collagen might help, although the jury is out on these…
Do face yoga or facercize so your muscles don't go slack
Get enough sleep.

HopelessLayout · 04/05/2020 18:06

The biggest laugh is micellar water.....its literally water...with a dab of caster oil and a dab of lemon. They stick a garnier label on it and sell loads of it.

I saw a site selling vitamin c powder dressed up in a fancy skincare tub, for £50 for a few ounces. Grin

OnTheMoors · 04/05/2020 18:12

Liz earle moisturiser and the cleanse and polish at night. I have no spots and clear skin for years from using this

CrossFreelancer · 05/05/2020 06:54

Whilst I agree with most of your points. Your point on doing facial exercise is wrong.

Facial muscles don't go slack. (Our supporting fat pads drop due to volume loss and loss of elastin holding them up)
If you have strong upper face muscles, then you are likely to have more wrinkles. Because as you contract, this makes your crowsfeet deeper, your frown line deeper for example.

(Just to explain, Botox relaxes these muscles temporarily. Which is why it's called an anti wrinkle treatment)

I explained to my Nana that facial exercises were causing her wrinkles and her face was a picture when she realised what I meant. She has been exercising her face for yearsGrin
