Ok so I’m 35, I need to start taking better care of my skin.
So far this is what I’m starting this week-
Cleanse face,
Toner (rose water toner)
Retinol serum
Olay anti wrinkle night cream (For evening) and the day one with spf 30 for day.

So turns out I need to use eye cream as well?? Seriously?? Ugh. But ok, if needs must..
so, can anyone recommend an eye cream they love? Or is it unnecessary?

I think genes plays quite a role in skin ageing. My mum has a young looking face and I got ID'd twice last year at age 40. I have a very minimal routine - have slathered my face with cheap Astral moisturiser for years (as has my mum, so maybe it's that and not genes) and I'm sure I look greasy to others at times, but I don't really care. I use powder on occasion but that's about it makeup wise. Gently wash face in shower with whatever shower gel happens to be there, slather on Astral straight after. I am now using The Ordinary retinol in squalene at night, but I can't see myself adding anything else to complicate matters. Oo, also a sunscreen for sensitive skin when it is sunny,

Well aside from the exceptional @TabbyMumz, Most people should supplement Vit D3.... we no longer spend whole days hunting and gathering so in all likelyhood unless you are sustained on a diet of egg yolks and fatty fish it is a great supplement for most.

With regards to OP question of vitamins... I have just started on a hair, skin and nails supp. I went for a supp high in biotin and zinc. For skin and hair mainly. It's only been a week so
I also used to take b12 and it really was great for my hair - really slowed increase of grey hair and levelled out my moods but now I eat low carb, high protein and fat diet I feel I don't need this as much.
I'm very intrigued by others experiences with vitamin supps too....

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 09:10

cinammon...I dont think everyone should be self medicating with vitamins to get enough vitamin d. Sunshine and diet should suffice. Perhaps that why I dont have a deficiency, because my skin is not covered in spf 30 or 59!!!!We live in a cold country where you only really need suncream in the Summer. You definately shouldn't need f50 all year round.

dayswithaY · 04/05/2020 09:13

Anyone who regularly uses retinol should use SPF on their face.

doadeer · 04/05/2020 09:14

@FruChoc haha I also did a sweeping generalisation 🤣🤣

I have a hugely elaborate skincare regime. I enjoy it. Find it relaxing when I have a toddler and not much time to myself. I've got Caroline Hirons Spring Kit coming soon I am so excited!

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 09:15

Dayswithay....why? What does retinol do?

WaltzForDebbie · 04/05/2020 09:19

I have sensitive skin and lots of things irritate my eyes. I have found that are really simple routine works best for me after trying lots of expensive products and researching on Sally Hughes etc etc. I tried a retinol but it irritated my eyes. I have very good skin anyway so so a lot of products were actually making my skin worse.

Now I use a cream cleanser morning and evening and wash off with water. No flannel or scrubbing, just my fingers, as I found that was irritating my skin. (La Roche posay toleriane is lovely and not too greasy).

A serum at night (Olay regenerist is excellent, contains niacinamide, and is often on offer on Amazon. My skin really improved after I started using this).

Sunscreen in the summer on my face. I like Kiss my face SPF 30.

That's it, I find I don't really need a moisturiser. If I occasionally need one in the winter I use La Roche-posay Toleriane riche

WaltzForDebbie · 04/05/2020 09:20

*fairly good skin

Stampy84 · 04/05/2020 09:35

@TabbyMumz I believe it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun ☀️

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 09:39

@TabbyMumz well the nhs would disagree with you www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/.

I would take advice form there rather than a random on MN. Also vitamins are not medicines which is why you can buy them otc.

AriadneCrete · 04/05/2020 10:03

This is my current routine:

AM:
Cleanser: Oskia Renaissance Gel or Exuviance Gentle Cleansing Cream
Acid toner: Pixi Glow Tonic
Toner: La Roche Posay Serozinc
Hydrating spray: La Roche Posay Toleriane
Eye cream: Drunk Elephant C Tango
Vitamin C: Drunk Elephant C Firma (although I actually think I prefer Sunday Riley CEO for Vitamin C)
Hyaluronic acid: The Ordinary
Moisturiser: Sunday Riley Tidal (This was a present- I like it but I think there are better moisturisers. My favourite is Caudalie Vinoperfect)
SPF: La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF50

PM:
As above except I first cleanse with Emma Hardie Moringa before the other cleanser and use Paula's Choice BHA instead of the Pixi and add a treatment serum (e.g. Sunday Riley Good Genes) and use Cerave moisturiser. And no SPF at night obviously. Every other night I use Drunk Elephant F Balm on top of my moisturiser.

Pixiefringe · 04/05/2020 10:06

I wash my face with water in the morning and use Olay light moisturiser.

Evenings I wash off any make up with soap and water and then use an anti wrinkle L'oreal night cream that contains retinol. Since using this cream I've noticed my skin has a much healthier glow.

Peridot1 · 04/05/2020 10:22

@doadeer - lucky you getting a kit! I didn’t try but watched all the excitement.

MouthBreathingRage · 04/05/2020 10:27

@AriadneCrete, genuinely can't tell if you're talking about a skin beauty routine, or suggesting names for underground alternative-type rock bands.

littlepeas · 04/05/2020 10:33

I think the reason it’s spf year round to avoid ageing is that UVA levels stay the same year round (it’s UVB that varies). A=ageing, B=burning. Got this info from a dermatologist.

I still don’t wear spf everyday - my skin hates it. I wear a hat instead.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 10:37

Cinnamon.. that nhs advice has only just gone up in the last few days and it clearly states because of coronavirus not many people are going outdoors so might want to supplement. Normally, they wouldnt be telling the masses to supplement in vitamin d, because most people get enough from diet and sunshine.

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 10:43

@tabbymumz uhhh no the advice from the nhs for years has been for everybody to take vitamin d supplements in autumn and winter www.thurrockccg.nhs.uk/about-us/document-library/medicines-management/formulary-and-prescribing-guidelines/chapter-09-nutrition-and-blood/3543-vitamin-d-self-care-leaflet/file

vanillandhoney · 04/05/2020 10:46

This thread exhausts me!

In the morning I wash my face in the shower with a flannel and shower gel. In the evenings I wipe make-up off with a flannel and warm water, and towel dry afterwards.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 10:49

Cinnamon.. there was someone on here literally days ago saying the NHS's advice never says take extra, then literally a couple of days ago that advice about taking it because of Corona came up. Everyone was mentioning how it had just appeared!!!
Most people normally dont need to take extra, if you have the correct diet, and get out and about outdoors. Of course if you sit in all the time and the sun never gets on your face, you may be lacking.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 10:52

Studies have shown an increase in brittle bone disease in children coincided with an increase in sun cream use.

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 10:57

The link I posted is from 2017 I would implore you to read. The NHS have said for years that everyone should supplement in autumn and winter. @tabbymumz

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 10:58

@TabbyMumz well yes those children’s parents should have been supplementing them with vitamin d?

Whether you were spf everyday or not then supplements will give you sufficient vitamin d so there isn’t an issue.

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 11:01

From 2016 when the guideline for vitamin d supplements was introduced www.nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/the-new-guidelines-on-vitamin-d-what-you-need-to-know/

BertiesLanding · 04/05/2020 11:06

Morning:

  • Wash Face - Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
  • Toner - Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner
  • Moisturiser - Dermalogica Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50

Evening:

  • Exfoliate - Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
  • Wash - Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
  • Toner - Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner
  • Moisturiser - Dermalogica New Skin Smoothing Cream

I love Dermalogica.

DappledThings · 04/05/2020 11:07

Hang on. Have I got this right? It is advocated that women use retinol, which makes your skin more sensitive to the sun so to combat that you use SPF every day but then to combat that the SPF means you don't get enough vitamin D you take a further supplement?

Nobody else think that sounds just a little bit daft?
