Ok so I’m 35, I need to start taking better care of my skin.
So far this is what I’m starting this week-
Cleanse face,
Toner (rose water toner)
Retinol serum
Olay anti wrinkle night cream (For evening) and the day one with spf 30 for day.

So turns out I need to use eye cream as well?? Seriously?? Ugh. But ok, if needs must..
so, can anyone recommend an eye cream they love? Or is it unnecessary?

My friends say having children is what really aged their skin

Yup. This.
The pregnancy hormones, breastfeeding, sleep deprivation.... I don't think I can ever drink enough water, eat enough veg etc etc to replenish and bounce back from the carnage having kids caused to my face...

littlepeas · 04/05/2020 07:54

Morning - cleanse with L'occitane Immortelle foaming wash, spritz of Liz Earl tonic spray, Korres rose and vitamin C brightening oil, Korres rose and Vitamin C moisturiser (combination skin). Pai spf in summer if I'm going to be outside a lot (some people will say spf all day, everyday, but this doesn't suit my skin and I'd rather take the wrinkles than the spots and redness - I've tried lots of different brands, etc - I wear a hat a lot of the time to keep my face out of the sun).

Night - cleanse with Lush ultrabland, cleanse again with L'occitane Immortelle foaming wash, trilogy reship oil, korres rose night cream.

I am 37 and have mega sensitive combination skin. The above involved a huge amount of trial and error. The thing that made the biggest difference to my skin is stopping drinking alcohol (completely).

Because the chemicals work!

I use
Cereve face wash
Niacinamide + zinc
Moisturiser
Spf

Cereve face wash
Buffet or granactive retinoid (alternate)
Rosehip oil

I also have ultabland for make up, and dark angels for when I feel like a good scrub.

The ordinary aha+bha peel (sporadically)
The ordinary salicylic clay mask (weekly ish)

crispysausagerolls · 04/05/2020 07:56

Morning:

Gentle exfoliating wash
Face serum
Rich moisturiser

Night time:
Cleanser
Toner
Face oil

TabbyMumz, then you have naturally good skin, I did to, but lots of people don't. I had to start a skincare routine post menopause.

OP, ideally retinol should be used of a night. It's more beneficial while you sleep.

Pinkfrangipani · 04/05/2020 07:58

Everything is a chemical!

totallyyesno · 04/05/2020 07:59

I follow my grandmother's skin care routine . It worked for her and it's working for me! If I have worn make up, I cover face in ponds cold cream and take off with a hot flannel. (If I haven't I don't do anything much! Maybe a quick wash with water if I feel dirty). In the morning I wash my face in the shower with water, no soap . Moisturiser with spf. Every weekend I use an exfoliater. Twice a year I have a professional facial.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:01

No, my skin was no better than anyone elses in my teens, greasy, spots, the lot. I used to tone, cleanse etc, then realised I was making my skin work hard with all the toner, then cleanser, then moisturiser. Just stopped using it all. My skin is much better . Now in the summer, if I need to put on sun cream, my skin goes bad again. Best advice I could give, is dont waste your money on all that rubbish

Ponoka7 · 04/05/2020 08:03

"My friends say having children is what really aged their skin"

I've found that it depends on the age that you have them. In your 30's is when you start to notice ageing. Combine that with all that motherhood throws at you and your skin will take a downward turn. But so would anything that caused a lot of sress and some sleep depravity. But it's recoverable.

The women who have children in their 20's, or even late teens, don't notice the same effect.

User18492725204065241 · 04/05/2020 08:03

My skin has never looked better since switching to all natural products. I used to have a long routine with loads of steps and expensive products but they didn't clear up my mild acne or rosacea. I then tried beautypie for a while but find their formulations have too much perfume and filler to be really effective.

LIHA ose gidi black soap has changed my life as a deep cleanser, I use that every other day alternating with a shea and cocoa butter cleanser I made myself and a green clay and chamomile mask I made a few times a week to clear sebaceaous filaments on my nose and shrink the pores on my cheeks while reducing redness. Rosehip oil as a moisturiser with tea tree oil to clear spots. Nothing I use now costs more than £15 whereas I used to spend £40+ on individual cleansers and serums.

Ponoka7 · 04/05/2020 08:07

TabbyMumz, i too had greasy skin, it stands you in good stead for when your skin starts to naturally become dehydrated with age.

Your advice suits your skin. I'd have skin like leather if I didn't use products. I also want to keep a glow, so work towards that.

If you can't understand that people's bodies are different and have different needs, then you're lacking in common sense.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:08

If you think about it, most men dont use anything on their face, and their skin is fine.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:10

Also, when people ho on holiday abroad, they come back with glowing skin. Not just from a sun tan, but from not using rubbish on their face all the time.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:12

Ponoka Eeveryone is on here talking about their routine and advocating it. I'm no different.

Pinkfrangipani · 04/05/2020 08:12

Men lose their collagen, elastin and natural hyaluronic acid at a slower rate than women. This means their skin remains firmer and hydrated without volume loss to a much later age.
For women, we start to lose all of the above from 30 onwards. Totally unfair, but that's life!
Men will always tend to have 'better' skin.

VivienLeighsHandbag · 04/05/2020 08:12

I’m 47, my skins in good condition. Been looking after since my 20s.

DappledThings · 04/05/2020 08:13

What do people consider "good" and "bad" skin? I have no idea what mine is because I've never given it much thought. I have rosacea which is mostly mild but with some flare ups that go away again after a few days but I have an underlying redness and bumpiness that is pretty much constant.

I have a lot of lines round my eyes that appear when I smile but that's just normal isn't it?

I know there are a million expensive products out there but I assume they are mostly a scam. I'm fascinated by how much time and money people spend on this stuff. I can't believe anyone really needs a tenth of it.

Peridot1 · 04/05/2020 08:14

TabbyMumz - I follow th same routine on holiday. Why wouldn’t I? I don’t know why you think people don’t use ‘rubbish’ as you put it while on holiday.

MouthBreathingRage · 04/05/2020 08:19

If you think about it, most men dont use anything on their face, and their skin is fine.

Of course it is, because women are conditioned to think that natural aging skin is awful on them, but not on men. This thread reminds me of this Mitchell and Webb sketch:

Lampan · 04/05/2020 08:20

Everyone’s routine will vary according to what works for them.
But the one thing that struck me in your first post is the moisturiser with SPF30 - I don’t think this is enough. I would use a non-SPF moisturiser and a separate sunscreen over the top, SPF50 all year round.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:22

Peridot...because they might be in and out of a pool, it might be hotter, they might not be putting so much makeup. Not that hard to think about really. I've often heard people talk about taking different stuff on holiday than usual ?, or not taking much at all and giving their face a rest.

doadeer · 04/05/2020 08:23

There are lots of factors that affect how your skin ages. If I compare to my grandma's life... There's a lot more

  • pollution
  • stress
  • knowledge about sun protection
  • understanding of nutrition

Some are good, some bad. My grandma is 87 and still looks wonderful. But if I look at pictures of her or my mum when they were 30 they seem to look older than me. But who knows what I will look like when I am her age. I try to use products and have a routine that is scientifically proven to be good for skin. Information changes all the time.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:23

"Iwould use a non-SPF moisturiser and a separate sunscreen over the top, SPF50 all year round."
This could add to vitamin d deficiency.

Stampy84 · 04/05/2020 08:25

Definitely going to get a vitamin C serum today, I’ll put that on after cleansing and before my moisturiser, then I’ll get a separate spf to go on..

Oh, I also go an Algae face mask, I’ve heard great things about it when used 2-3 times per week.. ah to stay forever young 😊

Really... I disagree. So many men post 30 with spots, rashes, redness, massive enlarged pores, skin damage, dryness etc

I think it's just more socially acceptable for men to not give a stuff (plus they can grow beards to distract lol).
