To ask your skin care routine?

Ok so I’m 35, I need to start taking better care of my skin.
So far this is what I’m starting this week-
Cleanse face,
Toner (rose water toner)
Retinol serum
Olay anti wrinkle night cream (For evening) and the day one with spf 30 for day.

So turns out I need to use eye cream as well?? Seriously?? Ugh. But ok, if needs must..
so, can anyone recommend an eye cream they love? Or is it unnecessary?

I also think if you look at a lot of women in poorer countries, where they cant afford to spend loads on face stuff, their skin is no worse than women in the UK, often its 10 times better.

Peridot1 · 04/05/2020 08:31

TabbyMumz - granted I don’t wear make up during the day on holiday if is beach or pool but still follow the rest of my routine. Most people I know do the same. You seem determined that anyone who follows any skin care routine is wrong. You do you. I’ll continue to do what works for me and what I enjoy.

@Pinkfrangipani high five!

I have heard great stuff about skinceuticals and medik8 but haven't tried them myself.

I really love PCA (but they are quite expensive, even my clients, so I have recently trained with Alumier and really impressed so far!

OP, Vit C in the morning (it's an antioxidant and will protect your skin from day time, environmental pollutants)

Retinol every other night until your skin is used to it. Once it starts feeling sensitive and flakey, cut back a bit.

I would look for moisturiser without SPF in future. (and wear a separate SPF on top). But for now, it would be fine to 'double up'

doadeer · 04/05/2020 08:33

Actually Tabby I don't agree. Many people in hot countries in Europe have very sun damaged skin which is aging.

Some people you have black skin it's more forgiving... I think this tends to be true but in my DHs case his skin is very dry and needs a lot of extra moisture added. His mum doesn't have any wrinkles at all and is 65.

I live in an affluent area and the women around here look very very good for their age, if I go to a poorer area (where I'm from) the women look 20 years older.

CrossFreelancer · 04/05/2020 08:33

TabbyMumz
Ethnic skin tends to age slower due to higher melanin which protects the skin from the sun so this is possibly what you are seeing.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:35

Peridot..I dont really give two hoots to what you do.

FruChoc · 04/05/2020 08:36

Ignoring the sweeping generalisation... I would suggest it might have alot more to do with diet (namely sugar) and alcohol consumption

Stampy84 · 04/05/2020 08:36

If retinol is good for your skin, why does it make it go dry and flaky? Will that settle down??

OP posts:
Stampy84 · 04/05/2020 08:39

@TabbyMumz maybe your skin is due to good genes? I guess you’re very lucky that you don’t have to do too much! And perhaps you’re regime is the right one, who knows? I have heard that a simple face wash and cream is perfectly fine, but at the moment I really would like to give my skin a chance.. I’ve had an unbelievably stressful 2 years and I want to give my skin a fighting chance if I can!

TabbyMumz- right back at you. But you insist on coming onto a thread about skincare when you have no interest and denigrate anyone who does. Not sure what you are trying to achieve. And I was telling you what I do as you seem to believe it’s your way or the highway.

doadeer · 04/05/2020 08:43

Fruchoc

Yes realise it was a huge generalisation 🤣 I was just replying to the other generalisation haha. You're right of course, many other factors play a more major role. Though I would say alcohol consumption can be very high amongst wealthy too.

troppibambini · 04/05/2020 08:43

Am
Hot cloth cleanse
Hylauronic acid serum
Caffeine eye serum
Moisturiser
Sunscreen

Pm
Double cleanse
Either vit c serum or buffet
Moisturiser
Facial oil

Or 3 times a week

Pm
Double cleanse
Retin A

On sundays I either use a pink clay mask or do an the ordinary peel.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:44

Peridot...why dont you just go and bully someone else. I'm taking part in a thread just like everyone else. So but out and leave me alone. If I want to talk about skin care, I will, you arent the thread police for goodness sake.

LaLaLanded · 04/05/2020 08:44

Men do not have better skin than women - we just don’t expect them to have “perfect” skin. I was looking at DP’s skin the other day (yes this did freak him out) and honestly he could do with something to unclog his pores and get rid of dead skin. I don’t usually see it, just like I don’t with other men. It’s societal.

Also re women in poorer countries - I have family in a “poor” country. Pros: they don’t drink, and they eat less sugar than the standard western diet. However they do have quite a lot of milia (hot country? I don’t know) and the skin doesn’t glow. They are black but don’t use SPF so it seems like wrinkles stay at bay until about 60-70, and then pile in.

As I’ve said before, I would love to be able to just wash my face and go. I’m not spending time, effort and money for kicks. But I know what happens when I don’t treat my skin as I do - it’s not good.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 04/05/2020 08:46

Oil cleanse
Hot flannel
Loads of moisturiser

That’s all !! Plus SPF most days

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:46

OP, I'm not it's down to Gene's My skin was no different to my sisters growing up or in mid twenties. They carried on using toners, cleansers etc, I didnt. Mine is clearer than theirs and doesnt give me any problems. I just sincerely think the less you put on, the better it will be.

DappledThings · 04/05/2020 08:49

I just sincerely think the less you put on, the better it will be

I think so too. I also suspect that all the other contributors to this thread all look totally fine without all the products mentioned and are looking at their skin in a way nobody else does and seeing stuff nobody else does.

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 08:50

@TabbyMumz water is a chemical and you put that on your skin?

FruChoc · 04/05/2020 08:51

@doadeer oh I was replying to @TabbyMumz.... I might have messed up my copying/quoting....
we're singing from the same song sheet 😀

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 08:52

@TabbyMumz most people in the uk have a deficiency in vitamin d so you should be supplementing anyway.

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 08:53

Women in ‘poorer countries’ tend to have darker skin than Europeans which means they get less some damage (melanin prevents sun damage) so they get wrinkles and sagging later in life than people with ligehter skin. Nothing to do with skin care routines.

TabbyMumz · 04/05/2020 08:57

"@TabbyMumzmost people in the uk have a deficiency in vitamin d so you should be supplementing anyway."

I dont. My vitamin d levels are fine.

cinammonbuns · 04/05/2020 08:58

@Tabbymumz well good for you? Nothing wrong with wearing spf daily if most people are deficient in vitamin d anyway, everyone should be supplementing anyway

dayswithaY · 04/05/2020 09:02

Retinol is important but I have sensitive skin and it just didn't suit me, it gave me red patches and irritation. I switched to matrixyl which is a peptide so still anti ageing but seems gentler. I've also started using a PHA toner by The Inkey List again as it's gentler in my skin than a glycolic. As I have dry skin I love adding squalane to moisturiser in the morning and have just switched to Argan oil at night after matrixyl. I was using cold pressed rosehip seed oil but again, prefer the richness of Argan on my skin.

I always resisted an eye cream but have just started using a very cheap Boots own one and wow the difference is noticeable.

And proper cleansing at night with an oil based cleanser is so important if you are wearing SPF in the day as it's the only thing that shifts it.
