Gym wear as outdoor wear?

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 14:37

My friend just bought gym leggings for wearing round Asda, I am horrified Gym wear is for working out, not wearing out surely?

Yes petty thread but its lockdown and I am bored so ...

YABU activewear is acceptable as every day clothes.

YANBU gym leggings need to stay in the gym only.

You're horrified? Really? Get a life.

BlueChangling · 02/05/2020 18:49

I sometimes go shopping straight after my evening yoga class. I don't see the point of getting changed again considering I've already changed from my work clothes to my gym gear.

stopgap · 02/05/2020 18:54

Good god, you’d hate my town. Athleisure is the go-to look for maybe eighty percent of women.

Nogoodusername · 02/05/2020 18:59

I will get dressed in my gym leggings if I am doing exercise in the next couple of hours, and then pop on sports bra and sports top just before the class. I think cotton leggings are more comfy for hanging around the house in - my sports ones, although expensive, are tight, thick, not cotton, and like another said - surely a bit thrush inducing to wear all day?

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 19:10

OK I have accepted that wearing active wear for day to day activity is acceptable....

BUT the thread has shocked me in another way now. Seems a lot of people are going shopping AFTER the gym . Are you not a bit sweaty? I dash to the car and straight home to shower after a work out.

@UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda Nike Metcon X Free are just for the gym. Adidas are for style but hopeless for any kind if work out. They are for walking the dog, popping to any kind of shopping establishment, going to work on Fridays.

OP posts:
UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda · 02/05/2020 19:15

But OP, it isn't reasonable. Honestly.

And why are you going to the gym (not now, obviously)? Gyms are not reasonable either.

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 19:19

I only go to the gym so I can wear my active wear. Clearly I needn't have bothered.

Hihihihi, OP. I think you can be let off. Grin

EmeraldShamrock · 02/05/2020 19:49

when did it become OK to go out shopping in skin tight leggings with nothing else covering your arse?
The arse is big fashion accessory, the bigger the better.
My niece's are constantly squatting keeping the bum big and round for display. I suspect Instagram plays a part in it.

PubsClubsMinistryOfSound · 02/05/2020 19:55

It became ok to go out in leggings with nothing else covering your arse more than 10 years ago really, MN just appears to have come round to that later than the rest of society if that was still taboo on here in 2010.

PhoneLock · 02/05/2020 20:03

Why do you need to cover your arse? Is that a MumsNet thing too?

Taddda · 02/05/2020 20:14

I find it weird! One of my 'mum friends' wore Adidas leggings to soft play - I thought it was weird too OP

That might've been me....and why wouldn't you wear sports gear to soft play? Unless your sitting there with a coffee and a cardigan judging the the other mums playing with their kids....

Lightbulb moment.....🤔

Im happy to be weird!! 👍

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 20:19

I wore my gym wear for TotalNinja but that is exercise.

I think the comment was in terms of how trends change.
Skin tight jeans with a short top are different than leggings (sportswear or otherwise ) in terms of look where the top stops above the bottom.
It just looks different. I think the pockets or more substantial fabric give a different look. And it was not as prevalent 10 years ago as daywear. That’s all. Nothing to do with MN audience or some old fashion view of the world.

PhoneLock · 02/05/2020 20:46

Ah! Hence the MumsNet recommended long "top" for exercise...

Which is longer than some of my dresses.

saints37 · 02/05/2020 21:12

I'm not horrified. Style does not exist much in this country.

Branster · 02/05/2020 22:06

PhoneLock surely that should be classed as a dress, eh.
The thing is it’s all well and good but if someone is going to the gym or exercising hoping for a more toned body, then the starting point would be more of a cover up until things improve to the level that person feels more comfortable with tighter fitting clothes that expose a bit more in terms of shape.
My local gym is averaging sizes 6-8 with some very fit 10s in the actual gym with the corresponding attire. Which is totally in context, nobody stands out. Classes look more of a mixed bag in terms of sizes and what they wear and what they are comfortable with, they pay a lot of money for the membership, they might as well feel comfortable.

I seldom go because I don’t actually see the point in going to the gym. But I, personally, only wear gym leggings when exercising or running and don’t like wearing them otherwise. It does make me feel undressed in a way. Even tight leather trousers, I don’t like them without pockets at the back, same naked feeling. I could probably wear longer tops but it spoils the line and overall look. Weird maybe but that’s how it feels. It’s like wearing a bikini in a restaurant. I can wear a bikini any day but only in the right place (By the pool, on the beach, on a boat). It’s not to do with being ashamed of the human body, it’s about context and, to a degree, styles people are comfortable with. Tight skirts or dresses don’t pose the same problem.
I have to say, in some other countries, wearing gym clothes anywhere else but when exercising, is viewed as lazy-wear not athlesure.

Taddda · 02/05/2020 22:30

Ffs- its clothes! Some things look good on some people, some things don't, some people don't care, some people do....

Wear what you want!

I'm feeling quite dressed up today as I've upgraded my leggings from the Adidas to the Sweaty Betty's......tomorrow I shall be adorning a hoodie, brand as yet undecided pending on the 'shall I bother to shower'....

twinkledag · 02/05/2020 22:42

Yes my friend was just sitting in and having a coffee with me while her child played so the gym wear was not needed!

PhoneLock · 02/05/2020 22:44

PhoneLock surely that should be classed as a dress, eh.

Not according to the Mumsnet "Best gym clothes for women". It's a "Longline Thin Strap Vest"

The first vest I have seen where you would be in danger of tripping over the hem!

I agree with most of what you say. I have no body hang-ups and will wear practically nothing in the right context, but I only wear gym clothes to the gym or when exercising elsewhere. The only exception would be if I stop of at the shop or somewhere on the way.

AnnaNimmity · 02/05/2020 22:49

it seems to be the outfit of choice for every woman in public at the moment.

I live in my sweaty bettys. Before this there is no way I'd have gone to the supermarket in them, but now? I do do alot of exercise during the day. Sometimes I put a dress on top for a zoom meeting.

tillytown · 02/05/2020 23:03

Eh? The leggings are covering their bum

Mypathtriedtokillme · 03/05/2020 01:13

I normally I waddle my Lycra covered arse to school drop off then take my toddler to the park via a long walk/half arse park jog or we walk to the supermarket and get a few things.
No one likes thigh chafe.

mikulkin · 03/05/2020 03:46

Since lockdown started I only wear my gym wear, I worked shorts twice, when it is was very warm, otherwise I wore nothing but gym wear. I usually wore it at home and to gym but now I just don’t get out of it. I also quite often run to the supermarket (it is about 2 miles away) and then shop and walk back (the idea is to combine exercise and shopping for necessities in one go).
