Gym wear as outdoor wear?

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 14:37

My friend just bought gym leggings for wearing round Asda, I am horrified Gym wear is for working out, not wearing out surely?

Yes petty thread but its lockdown and I am bored so ...

YABU activewear is acceptable as every day clothes.

YANBU gym leggings need to stay in the gym only.

Maybe post a picture of what you are wearing OP, then we can all judge you? Except that really wouldn't be very nice would it?

CaryStoppins · 02/05/2020 17:13

My every day uniform is leggings, t-shirt and hoody!

I only wear different if I'm going somewhere fancy.

1forAll74 · 02/05/2020 17:13

Maybe she will be the fastest shopper in Asda,, in and out in a flash, in all that lycra.

CaryStoppins · 02/05/2020 17:14

I prefer gym leggings to normal ones as they tend to be really thick and high waisted.

walkingchuckydoll · 02/05/2020 17:16

I'm more surprised that she has an outfit to go shopping. I just go in with whatever I was wearing anyway. It never occurred to me to change to go grocery shopping.

LycraLovingLass · 02/05/2020 17:18

@thejollygargler do you want the outfit I am wearing now? I dont have a specific Asda outfit as I shop at Tesco and use home delivery.

I find it weird! One of my 'mum friends' wore Adidas leggings to soft play - I thought it was weird too OP.

And I keep seeing celebs in gym wear online! Like proper gym leggings and crop top. Never knew it was a thing!

PubsClubsMinistryOfSound · 02/05/2020 17:19

Its lockdown. People are doing well if they're wearing trousers.

bigbluebus · 02/05/2020 17:19

I'm quite often in the supermarket in gym wear - but only because I'm on my way to/from the gym. As soon as I get home I get showered and changed into ordinary clothes. I see people in the village where I live dressed in gym wear going for a stroll. I've never really got it - if I go for a walk I just go in whatever I happen to be wearing (usually jeans) unless I'm tramping across fields and climbing styles in which case I'll put my walking trousers on - and get changed again when I get home.

I thought the whole idea of lycra gym clothing is that it is stretchy and soaks up sweat very quickly and is quick drying. I don't see the point in wearing it if you are not going to get hot and sweaty by exercising.

Fallsballs · 02/05/2020 17:20

I thought leggings were compulsory in Asda ?

Linguaphile · 02/05/2020 17:20

I have a pet hatred for the activewear-as-daywear trend, so in that I agree with you. However, YABU in the sense that it is now widely accepted as an out and about style, so I don’t think she is committing any particular social faux pas.

doadeer · 02/05/2020 17:20

God I live in yoga leggings. Why be uncomfortable in jeans?!

EmeraldShamrock · 02/05/2020 17:21

I would think you'd a point if she was wearing her sports bra to asda.
I live in gym leggings lately. Blush

PineappleDanish · 02/05/2020 17:22

Special clothes for going to Asda? Does she have to change if she makes an unexpected trip to Tesco?

Also "horrified" is a bit strong.

How do you feel about people who go to the gym and then pop into Asda on the way home? is that OK?

EmeraldShamrock · 02/05/2020 17:25

I do too, I often need to crawl through tunnels or up the rope wall to nab DS. Some live a sheltered life. Grin

EmeraldShamrock · 02/05/2020 17:26

I wear them too, I don't think it is weird it is a mini workout.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 02/05/2020 17:30

Horrified is certainly not a strong word on MN😂
It goes:
Horrified
Shooked
Shocked
Shaking
Sobbing and shaking

And before you say what I think the answer to this will be. Yes. Yes. I can imagine someone coming here and sobbing and shaking because their mate went out in leggings😂

LudaMusser · 02/05/2020 17:30

A certain type of person wears gym clothing out and about i.e common people, chavs, criminals, the great unwashed

poolsofsunshine · 02/05/2020 17:33

Likethebattle yes they do. Men and women are often held to different standards but men buying gym wear especially to go food shopping in would also be comment worthy.

Adult men don't wear tracksuit bottoms or cycling shorts unless on the way to do sport where I live. They'd definitely be conspicuous ina supermarket.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/05/2020 17:33

@LudaMusser How is the air up there on your high horse? I hope your underwear isn't hurting with your judgemental pants up to your ear lobes. 😂

FrangipaniBlue · 02/05/2020 17:34

I live in gym lycra, in fact I have two "sets" - generic cheaper stuff that I actually use to train in and get sweaty, and more expensive branded stuff like Nike and Under Armour that is used solely for the purpose of NOT working out!

The only exceptions are "office" clothes and "going out out" clothes.

I am neither common, a chav, criminal or the great unwashed Confused

Dozer · 02/05/2020 17:34

“I wouldn't feel comfy with my lycra clad ass in public.”

Sounds like a body confidence issue. I don’t usually wear gymwear except for exercise, but often nip to Asda on the way to or from the leisure centre, and am fine in lycra, few people at either the gym or in asda are bothered by others’ clothing choices, and others’ opinions don’t matter anyway.

poolsofsunshine · 02/05/2020 17:34

It was the first sentence of the OP that caught my attention though - buying them specifically to hang out in Asda in...
