To be unimpressed with this substitution

I know these are difficult times but FFS Sainsburys! If I order a box of wine and it's not available, surely you should sub it for another box? Or perhaps 3 bottles so it's a similar amount. Not a single 18.7cl bottle. It's neither use nor ornament!

All the people saying larger subs are free (24 for 12 etc). They used to be with most supermarkets but now many charge for the subs or if the offer subbed was on offer apply that reduction to the new item.

So something from Ocado on offer at £9 instead of £12 was subbed for a £20 item and £15 charged.

Or they charge you the full price of the substituted item if you accept it

From Ocado website:

All our special offers are subject to availability. However, if you order items that are on a multi-buy special offer and we're unable to deliver all of the Items you need to get the multi-buy discount, we'll give you a pro-rata discount instead. It'll be based on the price of the items we do deliver. Equally, if you order an item that's on special offer and we substitute it, we'll give you a pro-rata discount on the substitute item based on its price.

So, now for the trickier part - how do we work out the pro-rata discount? To do this we need three things:

The total cost, before discount, of the items on special offer that we delivered (including any substitutes).
The total cost, before discount, of the items on special offer that you ordered.
The saving that you would have received if we delivered everything you ordered.

Then we divide (1) by (2) and multiply it by (3) to arrive at your pro-rata saving. Finally, we divide this total between the items on special offer that we delivered, based on their cost.

Morrison
If you accept a substitute product that we offer in place of a product ordered, we will charge you the price applicable at the time we pick your order for you. The price will be set out in the email that we send to you to confirm that we have picked your order.

Sainsburys
If you have substituted items that are more expensive and you choose to keep them, you'll be sent a confirmation email. At the same time you'll see a voucher drop in your online voucher wallet. This voucher can be used on any future online grocery order within the next 6 months.

Tesco
We 'price match' our substitutions, so if we've substituted a more expensive product than the one you ordered, we'll only charge you the price of the item you ordered. Substituted products for link-save and multi-buy offers (such as Buy One Get One Free) and Meal Deal offers are not included.

Does Sainsbury's not allow to turn subs off? I do that with ASDA so only get what I want :)

HaveAtEm · 02/05/2020 18:14

Tesco once swapped out my wet 'kitten' food pouches, for dry dog food (large breed, so really big chunky stuff!) Clearly not appropriate by a long shot! 😂

Mammyloveswine · 02/05/2020 18:15

I'd be foaming!

BeigeFoodLover · 02/05/2020 18:19

I once ordered mussel meat from Asda (great to stir into pasta in a hurry!) and got sent mincemeat ice cream!

iklboo · 02/05/2020 18:20

I think I'm going to start a thread about, I dunno, tadpoles and see how long it is before someone mentions CV19 and / or Brexit.

IllegalFred · 02/05/2020 18:22

Not charging higher prices for substitutions in normal times is fine, but at the moment when shops like Morrisons won't allow you to reject substitutions (or state that you don't want any at all in the beginning) it's a bit naughty imo.

IllegalFred · 02/05/2020 18:22

Ignore the Not at the start of that post!

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/05/2020 18:24

Some of these subs are hilarious. I’ve been having online deliveries for a few years and am still waiting for a silly one! The best was from Bobbiepin bleach for baby food. 😂

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 02/05/2020 18:28

I got a bit comb instead of a thermometer. Also flash kitchen spray instead of washing up liquid

catsandshoes · 02/05/2020 18:42

Years ago, I had a small loaf of bread replacing a newspaper.

And from Tesco one October, a bag of onions instead of pumpkins to carve.

Villageidiots · 02/05/2020 19:02

I didn't say that all of these are untrue but thanks for all the messages lol. Perhaps some of you need to get a life although I do understand that's difficult atm. But (factually) the pickers have targets and any subs will therefore be picked from the same or an adjacent aisle. Which makes the idea of a picker searching out grapes instead of wine or matey bubble bath instead of mates condoms simply risible. But it's a funny, if attention seeking story.

lollipoplola · 02/05/2020 19:23

Urgh my most recent one I ordered 800 grams chocolate, I got 400 grams chocolate for the same price.

sueelleker · 02/05/2020 19:23

We were at Blackpool once, and someone had dropped some jellied eel on the pavement. It looked exactly as if someone had been sick!

GabsAlot · 02/05/2020 19:26

can you not override them as pickers i mean-if it says cat food would u really think oh yes dog food will do

swampytiggaa · 02/05/2020 19:40

@GabsAlot no we can’t. However if dog food came up as a sub for cat food personally I would say that was out of stock.

We pick early. Lots of stuff hasn’t been put on the shelves. So after we have done the main pick we go round again and try to put in the missing items so that hopefully people get their bread and chicken and cucumber etc.

We are trying really hard. At the moment it is very difficult. We are supposed to socially distance but the shop has staff and customers in and we are working to a schedule. Customers are either tutting at us for existing or asking us where stuff is. Managers keep telling us to keep our distance which means we have to park our trollies at the end of the aisle and run up and down avoiding everyone else. This is probably why odd stuff happens 🙂

SunflowerSeedsForever · 02/05/2020 19:41

Morrisons totally allow you to reject at the moment. Tell them before they start unloading and they remove it in the van. They ask that you look at the substitutions before they arrive (they send a text and an email) and tell them as soon as they arrive.

(also if you complain about a substitution you have received after delivery they remove it with no charge)

So incredibly decent- not at all naughty.

PickAChew · 02/05/2020 19:45

At least it wasn't grapes :o

IllegalFred · 02/05/2020 19:45

"We are currently not accepting returned or rejected items at your doorstep. Please refer to our Help Hub to find out what to do."

groceries.morrisons.com/content/important-update-on-coronavirus-94110

Their instructions for how to claim a refund don't work, theirs loads of complaints on Twitter about it

maybegreyhound · 02/05/2020 19:46

Today Asda swapped Cabernet Sauvignon for Sauvignon blanc.
DH answers the door and didn't hand it back!
Muppets!

SunshineCake · 02/05/2020 19:46

Whenever there are threads like this we never have anyone say they can't be arsed to check properly and so substitute whatever. Do the pickers ever find out they gave the wrong thing or not enough etc ?

Bearnecessity · 02/05/2020 19:47

Never agree to subs , always select no subs so I would rather go without than some crap replacement.

crustycrab · 02/05/2020 19:54

I love the subs. Actively look forward to them. Especially since you just get a refund if they're unsuitable at the moment.

DysonFury · 02/05/2020 19:59

I would fire off a complaint in the strongest possible language. That is not only unacceptable in current times but utterly cruel. Is there a Wine Ombudsman? If so get them involved.

BillyAndTheSillies · 02/05/2020 20:02

Ordered some Tesco finest custard to go with dessert on Easter Sunday. Rice pudding turned up.

And the last time I ordered coriander I got mint. Yes I get that they're still herbs but so different.
