Bedding, duvet and pillows

StormsDontLastForever · 01/05/2020 21:42

Got a new bed today and badly need new pillows etc. DH says we should spend more money on getting a more expensive duvet and bedding etc, me on the other hand thinks as I replace duvet and pillows every few months it would be unreasonable to spend a lot of money. Aibu? And any recommendations of where I can get reasonably priced Egyptian cotton bedding? Pillows and a duvet Smile

You buy a new duvet and pillows every few months? That's madness.

tiredanddangerous · 01/05/2020 21:46

You replace them every few months?? Shock

burritofan · 01/05/2020 21:47

Sorry, you replace your duvet? Frequently? It's not a mop head or a toothbrush.

user1473878824 · 01/05/2020 21:47

You replace them every few months? Seriously? Unless they cost a couple of quid that’s insane, and if that’s why they need replacing so often you need more expensive ones.

Floofboopsnootandbork · 01/05/2020 21:47

Why on earth do you replace them every few months?!

Cambionome · 01/05/2020 21:49

I am gobsmacked at the idea of replacing duvets and pillows every few months!

Sparklyring · 01/05/2020 21:49

What a waste! We've had ours for years.

SallyWD · 01/05/2020 21:50

Whaaattt?!! I'm using my grandmother's duvet. She died 20 years ago and had probably had it at least 10 years. It's still as good as new. WHY are you replacing it every few months? That's so wasteful!

gonewiththerain · 01/05/2020 21:53

Every few months?
You can get ones specifically designed to be washed frequently it’s either snuggledown or slumberdown do a washable feather duvet and there are plenty of washable man made duvets. Either wash at home in a large washer or take to the cleaners. Pillows just go in the washer. Always use a pillow protector and two pillow cases then the pillow is kept clean.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/05/2020 21:54

We've had this before - there's another weirdo on here like that, replacing duvets and pillows every few months Confused

My duvet is 25 years old, as are my pillows. I wash them 3 times a year. They will last FOREVER.

FanSaBhaile · 01/05/2020 21:55

What??????
Wash your bedding (as in covers) every few weeks - OK
Replace duvet & pillows every few months? There are no words!!!

I spent a lot of money (from wedding presents) on a duvet and pillows 15+ years ago and they're still fine - they do get dry cleaned every so often, but not replaced!

nauseaandnipples · 01/05/2020 21:56

Is this a wind up?

Cherrysoup · 01/05/2020 21:57

Environmentally shit of you. Every few months is not the norm, I’m pretty sure.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/05/2020 21:58

Omg OP please please please stop the utter waste of replacing every few months?!

I've had the same duvet for 5 years. The one before that I had at least 10. You can wash and dry them.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 01/05/2020 21:58

Buy the best you can afford and they will last forever.

CyberNan · 01/05/2020 21:58

from the responses, I guess yes you a being unreasonable... buy a decent duvet and stop adding to landfill unnecessarily.

StormsDontLastForever · 01/05/2020 21:59

Pillows need to be bought new every few months as my DH suffers from bad nose bleeds and when I wash the cheap pillows they eventually lose shape! By saying I get a new duvet every few months I just meant I switch from summer to winter duvet, so in 6 months or so I will buy a winter duvet and put the summer one in the cupboard. Sorry I should have been more clear in my op

Musbury fabrics do reasonably priced Egyptian cotton bedding plus duvets and pillows. We ordered the super soft towels and they’re amazing. We’ll order bedding from them when we need it.

CasperGutman · 01/05/2020 22:00

I'm relieved to see this isn't a thing!

Nacreous · 01/05/2020 22:00

I have had my duvet for about a decade. I'm fairly sure my grandma had had it for about a decade or more before that.

Buy nicer bedding. Buy pillow protectors and a mattress protector if you feel strongly about pillows being unhygienic somehow.

Then don't replace them every few months and the problem is resolved.

Starksforthewin · 01/05/2020 22:00

I buy new pillows annually in the Sales. Old ones get moved onto guest beds and so on. It’s not a huge expense, but I wouldn’t be replacing them every few months. They get washed every month.

Duvets do get replaced but not quite so frequently, and again, if there are sales or special offers. We have three for our bed, with differing togs, so they don’t get used every day.
Much of the summer we don’t bother with a duvet at all.

25 years is a bit extreme!

squiglet111 · 01/05/2020 22:01

You can get your duvet and pillows dry cleaned. Get good pillows like dunlopillo. They last a lot longer than a few months

PorpentiaScamander · 01/05/2020 22:01

You replace them every few months? Whaaaaaat. That's insane. What a waste of resources.
I've had my duvet 10+ years. I just wash it every so often. It was a cheapish feather one from Argos.

midgebabe · 01/05/2020 22:01

Or get a waterproof pillow cover?

opticaldelusion · 01/05/2020 22:02

Can't you get waterproof covers for your pillows?
