Bedding, duvet and pillows

StormsDontLastForever · 01/05/2020 21:42

Got a new bed today and badly need new pillows etc. DH says we should spend more money on getting a more expensive duvet and bedding etc, me on the other hand thinks as I replace duvet and pillows every few months it would be unreasonable to spend a lot of money. Aibu? And any recommendations of where I can get reasonably priced Egyptian cotton bedding? Pillows and a duvet Smile

That's what waterproof covers are for. How wasteful

LaurieFairyCake · 01/05/2020 22:03

25 years is not extreme Shock

It's goose down and cost about £200, was a wedding present

It washes BEAUTIFULLY and is meant to last forever

I have a 120 year old feather eiderdown too, still in perfect nick

Consumerism gone mad, replacing everything few months, way too excessive, think of the planet and stop being wasteful

Cherrysoup · 01/05/2020 22:10

Has your dh had the veins in his nose cauterised? My dh had his done, he has mini bleeds, no floods any more.

Alsohuman · 01/05/2020 22:11

Our pillows are goose down, they cost a bloody fortune. I expect them to last the rest of my life.

nauseaandnipples · 01/05/2020 22:11

If cheap pillows lose their shape buy more expensive ones and put covers on them.
I really can't believe you throw duvets and pillows out so often!
Duvets last for years.

Bobsandbitz · 01/05/2020 22:14

I used to buy cheap pillows every 6 months or so, wondering why they always break down into bobbly bags full of cotton like balls. Then we invested in a proper expensive-ish down duvet and thick feather pillows. Still perfect after 4 years. Definitely worth paying more if you can afford it! Cheap can be good, but then you are replacing them more often. So less planet friendly too!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 01/05/2020 22:18

There are some eBay shops that do reasonably priced 100% egyptian cotton bedding. Go for at least 300 thread count and you will get some lovely bedding. Mine washes & tumble dries beautifully.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/05/2020 22:19

Get waterproof pillow cases. and your DH needs to see a doctor about the nosebleeds.

I do think a reasonable quality duvet is worth investment.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/05/2020 22:21

Lauriefairycake

I agree. The duvet in my spare room is a phenomenal quality goose down one which came from my parents house, it's at least 25 years old. Its the warmest duvet own, glorious in winter.

StormsDontLastForever · 01/05/2020 22:27

Thanks everyone

But some good washable pillows ones that don't loose shape and maybe use a protector on your husbands size
Duvets I find harder as can't get in my washing machine but have taken to launderette as cost of dry cleaning was a bit too much
But decent duvet is nice and summer ones I can get in machine
I used to buy cheap pillow and throw away too often as when I washed they came out all messed up

CyberNan · 01/05/2020 22:30

put a tampon up his nose

KeepWashingThoseHands · 01/05/2020 22:31

I buy quality stuff. Wash pillows in machine and do laundry collection couple/few times a year (max) for duvets as massive beds.

Think of the landfill!

Alsohuman · 01/05/2020 22:34

put a tampon up his nose

🤣

ouch321 · 01/05/2020 22:34

Not that interested in the duvet itself but do love buying new duvets covers.

I'd say I buy new ones every 3 or 4 years as there are so many lovely designs.

maria860 · 01/05/2020 22:37

My partner is always buying new pillows for our bed every six weeks pisses me off I like them then he changes them and he buys expensive ones not cheap ones either! I have no idea why he has this pillow obsession if I'm honest it's weird as soon as they lose shape he gets new ones 😳
I just bought a new quilt I had the last one two years went a bit lumpy I got a duck feather one I'm hoping it lasts ages paid £50 for it.
Why do you change your pillows it drives me nuts

Unravelingslowly · 01/05/2020 22:37

so in 6 months or so I will buy a winter duvet and put the summer one in the cupboard. Sorry I should have been more clear in my op

Where is last year’s winter duvet?

Pillows need to be bought new every few months as my DH suffers from bad nose bleeds

DH has an open wound (16 months and counting) on his cheek due to skin cancer, we have pillow protectors that we wash with the pillow cases each week or half week depending on blood loss. The pillows are fine but have been washed -once- before we bought pillow protectors.

ClientQ · 01/05/2020 22:38

I have a wool duvet, it's bliss

Nsky · 01/05/2020 22:43

You need pillow protectors ( get a few washable ones)and washable duvet

CornishPorsche · 01/05/2020 22:44

I'd be more concerned about why he keeps having nosebleeds....

And yes, do you throw each seasonal duvet away when you're switching then around?

Elouera · 01/05/2020 22:45

Last winter we got a duvet from asda. I was expecting it to be awful, but its very nice. Warm, not too heavy and great value. I plan on keeping it more than 6mths though!

I think got Egyptian cotton sheets from Sainsburys a few years back which are still going strong. I think they were finest sheets if that even exists? Hmm

NannyR · 01/05/2020 22:54

I've had a wool duvet from Baavet for about six years and it's great. I use the same one all year round (add a blanket on extremely cold nights/just a sheet on very hot nights). It still looks and feels like new and it's not been washed (I think that pure wool is supposed to be naturally antimicrobial and dust mite resistant).

nancyjuice7 · 01/05/2020 22:58

Pillow protectors from Dunlem are fab.
We're massive droolers and our actual pillows are still fine 3 years later.

Yes have a summer and winter duvet but they should be lasting you many years if your buying quality??

Mairay · 01/05/2020 23:01

I do the same as you, replace the pillows and quilt probably every 4 months. I usually go to Asda but I have found eBay quite good as well. They are cheap enough but still comfortable and stay nice and puffy.

I would check eBay for covers, or maybe high street/online shops if you can find a discount code.
