Hi all
dont do LOA constantly but it has worked a few times.
We have been trying for a baby for 4 months and this I wrote it in my notepad I will have a baby in Jan 2021 after finding out I am pregnant the end of April...yesterday the 30th April I got positive test! And they are getting stronger today. We only had sex twice this month just shows! I also made a mind movie on my phone of preg ladies and babies and watched it everyday for visulisation the universe has listened!!

The woo concept of LOA shouldn't be confused with thinking positively - they're different things. Thinking positively is only useful when you have control over your goal, and then only because it can motivate you into working towards it. It's of no use in bringing you a lottery win, curing health problems, or influencing others' feelings towards you.

YouokHun · 02/05/2020 11:59

Exactly Pelleas

SmileyCloud · 02/05/2020 12:23

I don’t really have an opinion on LOA as a whole but getting pregnant it’s absolutely not due to LOA, you just so happened to shag your husband when you were fertile and therefore got pregnant, it’s basic biology nothing to do with the universe! And surely it’s success can only be measured come January once you have your baby, not at 4 weeks pregnant🤷🏼‍♀️

Wishing you a healthy and happy pregnancy and if you could pop in your notebook that SmileyClould would like a win on the lottery, that would be smashing!

quarantinevibes · 02/05/2020 12:24

Blows my mind the amount of people on here that believe in LOA but then laugh at things like amber teething bracelets. You do know it’s all the same concept right???? Hmm total nonsense.

Laurend0603 · 02/05/2020 12:25

Wow - so many haters... I wonder how many have actually read the book. OP if this way of thinking has worked for you then that’s great. Congratulations

@Thesnacklady “haters” as a label for those that disagree...it sounds like you might be part of an MLM. I’ve read The Secret (in fits and starts) and I’ve discussed it and similar books with colleagues in a mental health setting where we have had a number of people really struggling with depression and with a sense that they are “not positive enough”, “not trying hard enough” “not visualising their goals” “bringing negativity on themselves”. They’ve usual subscribed to a particular brand of “coaching” or been in MLM. It’s quite a regular occurrence that someone is referred for psychological help and it’s clear that this kind of approach has been very damaging. We’ve discussed the impact of the coaching fraternity, often in MLM and often referencing books like The Secret and it’s outcomes for the MH of already vulnerable people. It’s very different to the sort of neutral clinical support people can access to help them improve their lot; which teaches rational and balanced thinking, realistic thinking, self compassion. If you think about it that’s far more useful than the idea there is a secret way to abundance and it’s all about your mindset, and if you get that wrong you’ve only yourself to blame. This is how LofA is sold to people and how it’s used to manipulate people and it can be very damaging. That is a world away from setting sensible goals and shifting your thinking and behaviour in order to move towards those goals.

Thinking rationally? Best approach
Thinking positively? Helpful.
Magical thinking? Fine if you get what you want, not great if you don’t.

MouthBreathingRage · 02/05/2020 12:27

@Laurend0603, are you OK hun Confused.

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/05/2020 12:27

Wow, it actually makes you popular too?? Confused. What a load of hooey.

Laurend0603 · 02/05/2020 12:38

@MouthBreathingRage am good thank you 😊 thanks for asking ❤ x

OP posts:
MouthBreathingRage · 02/05/2020 12:45

Thats OK. Perhaps stay away from the laughing gas though. Along with the nonsense woo bollocks that didn't get you pregnant.

WhiteWitch007 · 02/05/2020 12:49

Congratulations. It’s lovely to find out you’re pregnant. The best news you can hope to have in life. It doesn’t matter what you believe in, it’s a positive outcome. Share your good news with people who love you & not with anonymous keyboard warriors who don’t have your best interests at heart. I wish you all the best xx

donquixotedelamancha · 02/05/2020 13:02

Wow, it actually makes you popular too?*

Doesn't seem to be working. Perhaps OP is being too negative and didn't really want people to believe her.

Laurend0603 · 02/05/2020 13:12

@whitewitch007 thank you so much ❤ I know negative nancies 😂 thanks for your kind words xx

Chockablok · 02/05/2020 13:22

LOA gets a lot of negative attention because of the woo aspect, and "the secret" is very... americanised? Not sure if that's the correct term.

I read a book on the subject called "Lucky Bitch" and that seemed like a more balanced, logical approach.

Basically "the universe" is a just a metaphor. A way to focus your thoughts. Almost like praying, but if you can't pray to any god then pray to the universe, or the moon, or a tree in your back garden, or your favourite candle or whatever.

Anyway... I guess it would be like:

You have an all inclusive holiday booked and paid for but you get sick and the insurance won't cover it. You decide to give it away to someone since it's wasted anyway. You have two friends:

Friend A, who is bright and bubbly, good fun and always talking about how much she loves holidays! She's always saving up for her next one and although it takes a while that's her thing and she loves it.

Friend B, is only exactly the same income as friend A. She also loves holidays but is just a negative person in general. What a waste of money! We just make do with a week in Cornwall etc etc. That's her attitude.

Most people would give the holiday to friend A.

Most people would call that luck, I think?

Of course luck is random but there are things you can do to help the roll of the dice fall in your favour.

It's pointless thinking LOA "I really want to win the lottery".

Why would you wish, and spend all your energy focusing on, something so limiting?

If you wish and spend all of your energy on having more money, then subconsciously you will begin to work towards that. You might see something and think oh that might make a decent side business, whereas the people who were A) focusing on the lottery win or B) adamant that they've been dealt an unlucky hand in life and will never improve their circumstances, won't even be looking for that opportunity.

That's the basic premise anyway.

I do recommend that book for a slightly more balanced approach to it.

Also OP congratulations 🥳

acatcalledjohn · 02/05/2020 13:23

thank you so much I know negative nancies 😂 thanks for your kind words xx

You sound about 16 Hmm

Pelleas · 02/05/2020 13:25

Most people would give the holiday to friend A.

I'd toss a coin.

JasperRising · 02/05/2020 13:53

So Person B becomes more positive and bubbly and now you have two positive people but only one holiday. You still give the holiday to person A for whatever reason. Now person B feels like they are doing it wrong, that it is their fault positive thinking didn't work and eventually ends up seeing the pp who works in mental health care of her colleagues...

I am not saying positivity is a bad thing and the op who works in psychology explained better than me when it can be a good thing but the way it is touted by some of these self help books and theories can be unhelpful and dangerous. Again, as the pp who works in this field has seen first hand.

Thesnacklady · 02/05/2020 14:02

@YouokHun - By haters I mean the negativity and judgement. Opposing opinions are fine but the nastiness isn’t. If you re-read the op and further posts you can clearly see it’s written in a lighthearted way.

Also There are a lot of people making assumptions... MLM - nope

People simply cannot blame the books they choose to read or any coaching they choose to subscribe to for their mental health issues. If someone is suffering they need to seek the appropriate professional help from the outset.

All of this aside - The lady is pregnant. It’s a nice thing.

ColinsTrumpet · 02/05/2020 14:13

It never ceases to amaze me how thick people can be.

HolyWells · 02/05/2020 14:27

@Chockablok, I would personally cross the road to avoid ‘bubbly’ Friend A.

acatcalledjohn · 02/05/2020 14:33

By haters I mean the negativity and judgement. Opposing opinions are fine but the nastiness isn’t. If you re-read the op and further posts you can clearly see it’s written in a lighthearted way

You are missing the point.

But I'll use your argument about the OP being lighthearted (in the way that covert victim blaming is Hmm) and argue that those of us pointing out the utter bollocks LoA is and that you have to be pretty dim to think that writing a wish in a book will help it come true (lack of critical thinking) are also being simply "lighthearted".

The OP had sex. Promoting some bollocks to suggest it was anything other than the basic biological act of having sex is not lighthearted, it's shitty. Really shitty.

Pelleas · 02/05/2020 14:38

By haters I mean the negativity and judgement.

Some posters who have struggled with infertility are understandably upset by the OP's post - 'lighthearted' does not make something less hurtful.

Tramolamodol · 02/05/2020 14:57

I know I'm being over-sensitive but I felt really quite crushed by it. Like the OP, I had been trying for four months, I conceived in April last year and was due middle of January, this year. Unfortunately, the egg was a blighted ovum and I was, and still at points, devastated.
If LoA works for positivity then surely it works for negativity, therefore if positive thinking can cause pregnancy, negative thinking can cause a miscarriage. It's victim blaming at its worst.
I see myself as a positive person but please don't try to imply that it was my negativity that caused my loss. Light hearted or not, it hurts.

YouokHun · 02/05/2020 15:00

@thesnacklady but I think a lot of people have wished OP the best with her pregnancy and don’t blame her for being elated and you’re right it’s a lovely thing. However I think it is also right to mention that magical thinking is not the reason for this happy outcome and the implication of LofA is that those who never get this happy outcome are at fault. That isn’t what the OP is saying but Is a hurtful implication if you’re TTC and nothing is happening. Perhaps that’s why the OP hasn’t put it on the TTC thread; because she recognises it could be upsetting?

I’m not saying choosing to read a book damages your MH. I’m saying if you’re in some way vulnerable because of your MH, social circs (eg lonely), financial situation (poor job prospects, debt, low earnings etc), you’re more likely to be vulnerable to schemes that promise you your “why”, and unqualified “therapists”, coaches, business gurus etc. Many of those people use LofA as a hook, as a manipulation tool, as a way of controlling people for their own benefit. People don’t always seek proper MH or other support until after they’ve tried to improve their lot by, for example, joining an MLM and believing the promises they make. The people offering what seems like a social, emotional or financial lifeline may be close to hand; on their FB feed, the nice lady at the baby group, the neighbour who sells Juice Plus, the friend who sells Younique and has done an online counselling course. Those promises are usually couched in LofA terms (that way when it goes wrong it’s the individual’s fault). People are also told that people who question the scam are negative people and “haters” and haven’t understood the secret to a happy and successful life. I’ve seen this so many times. Have a look at some of the “mindset” coaches knocking about of FB; literally grooming people using LofA or that other shysters’ tool, NLP, to get them and keep them on message in which ever scam they’re Stealthily recruiting for. Worth looking at mlmtruth.org for examples of this misleading “philosophy” in action. The Secret is their bible, Eric Worre their God.

But yes, a lady is pregnant, it is a nice thing.

YouokHun · 02/05/2020 15:10

@Tramolamodol I’m so sorry to read your post, it sounds very, very tough Flowers. Your reaction is exactly what we are talking about. Lightheartedness and plenty of emojis doesn’t change how you feel about this kind of glibness.
