To not clap anymore

I really liked when it first happened. A lovely clap to show appreciation. But now its morphed into who can make the most noise. People playing music, letting off fireworks.

It just feels wrong, people are dying included health staff.

Dont get me wrong I love the NHS, love the heros who are saving lives and im more than thankful but it seems to me now this has become about attention seeking and whats worse is people filming themselves clapping.

It's not cringey celebratory or meaningless, it's 5 mins clapping outside fgs let people do it if they want to and stop moaning

LegArmpits · 01/05/2020 00:50

It's fucking ridiculous. Embarrassing nonsense.

Jezebel101 · 01/05/2020 00:55

Oh it's cringey, but it gives people something to do to convince themselves that they're contributing something.

I'd guess a fair few would be less keen on the pot-banging if they were reminded it was those EU sorts who did it first - and best, since it was spontaneous and from the heart and not policed by the curtain twitching busybodies of the neighbourhood. Enforced appreciation, sure what else does any Health Service actually need :P

PumpkinP · 01/05/2020 00:59

I found people trying to out do each other very cringeworthy

iswhois · 01/05/2020 01:15

I haven't done it once I think it's shameful to be honest

Too little to late

1984isnow · 01/05/2020 01:57

My dp took the bins out just as it errupted in our street. Made him feel like he did a stellar job.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 01/05/2020 04:31

Clap or don't clap....

Please don't if you're the idiots bullying others/naming & shaming to join in..

Or you are being a dick about lockdown... I'm sure the workers would prefer NOT to see you on covid ICU, as you had that too close catch up with your Thursday night neighbours.....

Support the NHS, but in whichever way actually helps.....

KatherineJaneway · 01/05/2020 04:37

I didn't know the clapping thing was still going on this week. I thought it had ended now.

debrasmith · 01/05/2020 05:25

My kids are really enjoying the clapping. Dh and I are both working more hours, DH has been doing shifts and staying in a campervan on the hospital car park alot of the time. They are packed off to school every day when their friends are at home with their families.
I see the clapping as being for them, it makes them feel special and brave.

Pixxie7 · 01/05/2020 07:24

Watching the news there didn’t seem to be as many people last night.

EndlessUserName · 01/05/2020 07:27

I agree OP. Clapping totally pointless. Put efforts into campaigning and petitioning for the NHS to be properly funded instead

Beautiful3 · 01/05/2020 07:56

The children in the street love banging their pots and pans!! Its only for ONE minute!

whatdoyoudonow · 01/05/2020 09:20

Even the family across the road (with their bunting, garden bookstall, posters in every window, thank you messages on bins etc...) didn't clap last night. I only looked out to see if they were there scanning the street as usual for non-participants.

PhilSwagielka · 01/05/2020 10:09

No-one's stopping anyone from doing anything, Ruby. Or are you one of those people who gets mad at people who don't clap?

Cailleach1 · 01/05/2020 10:18

We clap, and will always clap. When our children's grandchildren ask what we did during 2020 they will tell them "every Thursday at 8pm we all stood outside and clapped for the NHS and Carers" and no doubt they will look at them incredulously, but we know why we do it.

The French Resistance were a poor show in relation to this. This should be in the history books. I am not hoarding toilet rolls. I think I should be in the history books too. Even if people look at me incredulously. I know why I do it.

MooseBreath · 01/05/2020 10:32

I did it the first week, as so appreciate all of the hard and dangerous work that frontline staff are doing. I haven't continued though, as the government are using it as means to escape criticism of their chronic underfunding and mismanagement of the healthcare system. I refuse to be a part of that (despite my admiration and gratitude of frontline workers).

Willow2017 · 01/05/2020 11:08

It goes on a lot longer than 1 minute! Pots and pans, fireworks, car horns etc just ridiculous. Some people are trying to sleep!

EastMidsMumOf1 · 01/05/2020 11:15

It was beautiful at first, now it's just a shit show of a competition for who can make the most racket.
Fireworks, car horning, pots and pans next you'll have Joe Exotic with his tigers parading around the street every Thursday 8pm sharp.

EastMidsMumOf1 · 01/05/2020 11:16

@Beautiful3 you obviously live on a considerate street. We have fireworks still going off every so often until around 10pm.

c3pu · 01/05/2020 11:16

I don't clap, I send thoughts and prayers instead.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 01/05/2020 11:20

I was sitting in the shed in our backyard last night when the clap started, I timed it- all over within 4 minutes. Last week it went on for much longer and the week before that it was really loud and really long lasting. I think we are past the clapping peak.

EastMidsMumOf1 · 01/05/2020 11:27

You know how the public could help the NHS more, stop buying unnecessary PPE.
Too many times seen people wearing gloves while shopping, touching the trolley, food items then their phone will ring and theyll pull that out and put it to their face! Hmm
Makes my blood boil.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/05/2020 11:28

We have never stood out and clapped. The dog has barked a few times though!

Last night we were out in the garden and heard it full force! OMG! ABout 10 minutes long, saucepans being banged, musical instruments being honked, screams, whistles, vuvuselas!!!

Today facebook is full of details about the Umpah Band they are building across the town; how miserable some people are, so shocking!.

We'll stay in next week. That was far to much Conspicuous Caring for us! I suspect we have already been named and shamed!

PhilCornwall1 · 01/05/2020 11:41

Apart from the endless clapping, we've got people around here with pictures of rainbows taking up every window in their house, it must be as dark as hell in them. Now they seem to be putting up endless amounts of bunting.

If they've taped the pictures to their windows, it's going to be one bastard of a job cleaning that all off.
