To not clap anymore

HerstoryInTheMaking · 30/04/2020 20:24

I really liked when it first happened. A lovely clap to show appreciation. But now its morphed into who can make the most noise. People playing music, letting off fireworks.

It just feels wrong, people are dying included health staff.

Dont get me wrong I love the NHS, love the heros who are saving lives and im more than thankful but it seems to me now this has become about attention seeking and whats worse is people filming themselves clapping.

First one they did was emotional and there was a true purpose behind it .
Now it's a load of noise and bloody fireworks .

I'm an NHS HCP , I will take part in the 2 minutes silences and reflect ........................and I like chocolate and things .

FishingPaws · 30/04/2020 21:39

Tonight's cacophony set every dog in the area barking and undoubtedly woke most of any sleeping children - it's become an absolute pain!

YA most certainly NBU

Inkpaperstars · 30/04/2020 21:39

It's been much quieter here the last two weeks, had been loud before.

I think in NYC it's every night at seven.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/04/2020 21:40

YABU to have clapped to start with.

What is this, North Korea?

CountFosco · 30/04/2020 21:41

DH and I had a barney about it last week. He told me I should do my civic duty and clap. I work in Pharma. I may have got on my high horse and told him I was the one who was actually working on a cure for this disease and that would make a hell of a lot more difference than standing in the doorway and clapping for 5 mins once a week. I am a delight to live with Wink.

Aridane · 30/04/2020 21:42

It’s not Thursday without a I don’t want to clap thread.

😂

I prefer to clap than to moan.

Dahlietta · 30/04/2020 21:43

Too much clap around nowadays
Probably not as much as normally though, to be fair. That's lockdown for you.

ShutUpaYourFace · 30/04/2020 21:45

I've never clapped, neither has anyone in our street. Clap if you want, don't if you don't. What surprised me today was the bbc took time to cover hundreds of people, lots not social distancing, standing outside together clapping. What happened to stay at home. Protect the NHS, It's a joke right what are people thinking?

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/04/2020 21:46

When our children's grandchildren ask what we did during 2020

I heard this on an advert earlier....do people actually think anyone will care,

Well, enough that it comes up in history lessons or something

Titsywoo · 30/04/2020 21:47

I'm not going outside to clap with my hypocritical wanker neighbours

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 30/04/2020 21:48

What is this, North Korea?

You'd have more of a point if we were being forced to.
You do know that you don't HAVE to right?
And no, Tosspot Trevor or Stickybeak Susan over the road taking the hump if you don't doesn't count lol.

wanderings · 30/04/2020 21:48

At 8pm I could hear the fireworks, and some barking from terrified dogs. But the clapping sounded half-hearted.

I am not a sheep either. I refuse to clap; in a perverse way it feels like applauding Boris and his lockdown, which is certainly nothing to be celebrated, and is causing massive damage. Even if it means fewer CV deaths, its legacy is going to be suicides, obesity, bad mental health, mass unemployment, probable civil unrest, and lots of people with their futures ruined for a long time, because of this beloved lockdown.

AgentOhDoSodOff · 30/04/2020 21:49

Clapping is a nice activity for a community to to help around.
BUT I’m NHS and I would urge you to only clap if you vow not to never vote for a political party which has and is cutting us to the bone.

JonesyCat40 · 30/04/2020 21:50

It was a lovely gesture, but as usual the arseholes have got hold of it, and are now out there trying to be the loudest twats possible.
This is why we can’t have nice things.

LangClegsInSpace · 30/04/2020 21:50

Yerroblemom1923 - We clap, and will always clap. When our children's grandchildren ask what we did during 2020 they will tell them "every Thursday at 8pm we all stood outside and clapped for the NHS and Carers" and no doubt they will look at them incredulously, but we know why we do it.

Grin

Kim Jong-Un is not 'dead' he's just on holiday in the UK.

I wonder if he sits on SAGE ... Hmm

Hannah021 · 30/04/2020 21:51

God ppl r so miserable, its enough we're stuck in the house all day, let ppl make as much noise as they want, its only few minutes...
No one cares if u dont want to clap, u dont need to make an announcement!!

overnightangel · 30/04/2020 21:54

It’s attention seeking and virtue signalling at its worst.
Especially if it’s by Tory voters

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/04/2020 21:55

I'm making far less of an announcement not clapping than some twat bashing away on her saucepan.

not an euphemism

1forsorrow · 30/04/2020 21:58

It's raining where I am, amazing how a bit of rain damped down their enthusiasm. It would be good if someone could arrange snow for next week, I don't suppose it's likely.

Leflic · 30/04/2020 22:00

We had loads of clapping and cheering in the estate. It went in for ages. I looked out (clapping isn’t my thing) to see police cars going round and round with thrir lights flashing. Mmmm. Not seen a police car in town for months before this.

CrystalTipped · 30/04/2020 22:04

as a nation, we consistently vote for a party which openly decimates our NHS. To then applaud its workers during a pandemic seems ironic to me.

I'm hoping the Tories have finally decided to reverse their position on smashing the NHS to bits, that would be one positive outcome at least.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/04/2020 22:05

Someone near us makes a point of cycling around their estate during The Clap™️ and filming his neighbours out clapping and then posting it on Facebook. Of course, being the cynical type, I suspect what he’s really doing is shaming those neighbours that are not out clapping.

I have a question though: if you clap but don’t announce it on Facebook along with proof...did it really happen?

Rhubardandcustard · 30/04/2020 22:08

To the op who is going to tell your grandchildren that you clapped - I hope they say wtf is that all you did 😂.

That’s what’s wrong with carrying on the clapping now people think of they do it every week they are helping the nhs.

Wouldn’t you prefer to tell your future grandchildren that you volunteered with deliveries to the vulnerable, made ppe for careers or donated to charities. These would be things you could do as well as the clapping - if you still want to continue that - and I’m sure your future grandchildren will be more impressed with that than the weekly stand outside my own house for 2 mins clapping ridiculousness.

CantKeepSecrets · 30/04/2020 22:10

Yanbu.

My neighbours have definitely escalated it to "who can make the most noise" encouraging dogs to bark, kids screaming (literally screaming) at the top of their lungs, beeping car horns , posts and pans- the lot. I'm starting to dread Thursday evenings , at first I seen no harm in it , did a little clap at the window and moved on but ffs I'm over it. My toddler gets woken up every single week so I couldn't even do it if I wanted to Envy

They also make a point of shouting to each other "HI HUN ...I KNOW NOT MANY PEOPLE OUT TONIGHT ...SHOCKING" Hmm and some shit in between.

MH1111 · 30/04/2020 22:12

Virtue signalling BS.
