As per the title.
I have no facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat anything.

The president of the PTA texted me "hi what's your Facebook? I want to add you to the school page"

Me: I don't have Facebook

Her: WTAF? Are you serious? Who in this century doesn't have FB?!

I didn't reply.
I am happy with no SM. I was bullied at high school, I have social anxiety and although I do well in general with social situations I just have no desire to get or have SM.
AIBU and if you don't have SM, why not if you don't mind me asking?

I thought people in their 20s were increasingly rejecting social media?

tell this guy he's way out of date Grin

MashedSpud · 29/04/2020 11:50

I have WhatsApp for messaging/sending photos but I have no social media anymore and I only used fb back then to play Cafe World.

bobstersmum · 29/04/2020 11:51

@AftonGlen how did you do that? Did you have to put a name?

Blackbeans · 29/04/2020 12:05

Mumsnet is social media, isn't it?

Whatsapp is if you have groups and isn't if you just use it in place of text or phone or email to communicate with friends and family.

The problem with threads like this is that many of the people who proudly state that they don't have social media don't understand that there is a range of ways to use it.

I have an instagram account - I have never posted on it, and don't follow anyone on it. I use it to search hashtags like #knittersofinstagram or #handmade or #cupcakes to look at what other people are posting and get ideas. Same with twitter - invaluable for local information or news.

As others have pointed out, WhatsApp is again totally different.

Fine if it's not for you, but to dismiss it all as pointless, irrelevant, only for attention seekers or whatever when you really don't understand how it all works is ridiculous.

I’d be complaining about the “president” of the pta for the way she spoke to you about it.
I have Facebook but only have about 15 friend on it! I don’t add people I don’t know.

BakedCam · 29/04/2020 12:24

WhatsApp, here and a couple of other forms. You're not being u at all, OP. Twotter, Instagram and Facebook, I've not used for years and Instagram I have never used

Terrible attitude from PTA.

It strikes me that a lot of opinions on here are formed from lack of knowledge and understanding, plus there are too many assumptions that social media is only for the shallow and vain show offs.

Of course there are loads of idiots who post, but like many sensible posters I avoid them, don't follow them and don't have them as friends on Facebook or real life.

I think Time40 has given the best and most valid reason for not wanting to be on social media. Wanting to be "under the radar" is also a perfectly sensible reason to not want to join as well.

apparently Only old people use Facebook now

I am old KaptenKrusty Grin

Gatehouse77 they updated Facebook before they updated the websites.

The way some talk about what's on Facebook etc. makes me wonder if they should chose better friends in real life tbh.

I agree. I don't have many friends on Facebook because I know everyone I am Facebook friends with. I always get suspicious when teenagers, especially, have 5,000 "friends". How can they possibly know that many people?

In one friendship group I am in one of the members won't even consider WhatsApp, so we have to go to and fro texting to arrange a night out.

Fine if it's not for you, but to dismiss it all as pointless, irrelevant, only for attention seekers or whatever when you really don't understand how it all works is ridiculous

Spot on PineappleDanish. It's just ignorance (in the old fashioned meaning of lack of knowledge).

It's exactly the same as people being snobby about microwaves because they think they are only used for heating ready meals Grin

ConkerGame · 29/04/2020 14:50

I wish I didn’t have it tbh but I’m addicted and have FOMO, which is ironic as looking at social media gives me FOMO too!

TheoneandObi · 29/04/2020 17:23

Sometimes I wish I didn't have it because I know in idle moments when I'm scrolling I could be doing something else. But on the whole it's useful. It does help people stay in touch, and to reconnect it really does. It's like a notice it's too, telling you what's occurring locally. Sure there's a lot of silliness and showing off. But, having children who used it as teens and grew up with it, I'm kind of glad I knew what it was about. My sister is still snooty about it, and refuses to use it... and consequently missed all kinds of cues that her daughter was perhaps needing some guidance. I'm not saying any of you guys are by the way! But it helps to understand the enemy I suppose is what I'm saying. And you can't do that if you don't engage.
It's not al good or all had, it's just what it is, and you won't know that if you don't use it.
