Aibu regarding Fleetwood Mac

This is terribly trivial, I am aware.
I was watching Peter Kay's Car Share and there was a part where Peter Kay's character said that the Fleetwood Mac version of Dreams was better than The Coors version. This is one of my all time favourite songs and personally think The Coors butchered it, however my sister said The Coors version is better.
AIBU to say Fleetwood Mac's original is far better than The Coors version.

@ANoiseAnnoys that is exactly it. When you listen to FM it could be from any time. You don't hear it and immediately think of the 70s. I agree The Corrs sound dated

Ps I much prefer Dolly Parton singing 'I will always love you'...much more heart felt than Whitney's version which to me is over produced and features a lot of warbling. I am not a fan of Whitney's singing tbf

golddustwomen · 28/04/2020 08:21

Fleetwood Mac all day everyday... literally !!

BarbeDeMaman · 28/04/2020 08:22

Fleetwood Mac were stars. The Corrs were pop singers. They are not even remotely in the same category, except for the suggestion that they are all human beings (the jury is still out on Jim Corr mind you)

And I say this as someone who saw The Corrs in Wembley Blush. (I was there to keep a friend company, honest!)

Sertchgi123 · 28/04/2020 08:22

Fleetwood Mac 100%.

Lifeasweknow · 28/04/2020 08:22

@AftonGlen when we were talking about it, I had to go back and reacquant myself with The Corrs version and it was definitely worse than I remembered

@BarbeDeMaman 😂 my friend dragged me along to a Blue and Steps concert. I was just there for a good time in the sunshine 🙈

I would have agreed with you until I had the unexpected and absolute pleasure of seeing The Corrs play live at a private gig. They were absolutely brilliant, so much better live than on record. It was about 20 years ago,and I’ve never forgotten it.

The Rumours LP will always have a special place in my heart as I’m old enough to have bought it when it first came out and I’ve owned it on tape, vinyl, CD and now digitally. It’s probably one of my top 10 albums but The Corrs absolutely rocked Dreams live on stage.

ScrambledSmegs · 28/04/2020 08:24

Fleetwood Mac's Dreams is the original and the best. Yanbu.

However the Corrs tried, at least they sang in tune. Now Florence and the Machine 'covering' the Chain at Glastonbury - that was the absolute definition of butchering. Haunts me.

theseriousmoonlight · 28/04/2020 08:25

Fleetwood Mac all the way.

When it comes to 'Hallelujah', I've only heard excellent singers do it, so I don't have a favourite although as I first heard Jeff Buckley do it during a rocky time as a teenager, I will always associate the song with him.

I think Dolly does 'I will always love you' better. I think Whitney's vocals are really good but a bit overly dramatic.

My DP and I disagree over 'Land of Confusion'. I prefer the Genesis original but he likes the version by Disturbed. More disturbingly, I once heard a DJ say that some indie band version of 'Hounds of Love' was far superior to Kate Bush. I don't think I'll ever recover.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2020 08:28

Dolly Parton wrote I Will Always Love You! That's not really a cover version.

LeaveItBarbara · 28/04/2020 08:28

Workercovid I opened this thread to say 'I'd rather jack' too. [holds Smash Hits sticker album aloft]

An international Covers Tribunal should have been set up after UB40's version of Can't Help Falling In Love so offenders could be properly dealt with.

cooldarkroom · 28/04/2020 08:28

THE BEST VERSION OF "ONE" ?
With or without MJB ?

NotSorry · 28/04/2020 08:29

The recent rerelease of Whitney Houston Murdering Stevie Winwood’s “Higher Love” had me running for the off button every time. When the radio actually played the original the dc said, “oh what’s this version, it’s much better” no shit Sherlock!

OP YANBU - NOBODY CAN BEAT FLEETWOOD MAC - YES I AM SHOUTING

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2020 08:29

Not only wrote it, but recorded it first and had a hit with it. Whitney's was the cover version.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2020 08:31

OK, I see this was covered earlier. Perils of reading the thread backwards ... Blush

cobblers123 · 28/04/2020 08:31

The Corrs did a version of Phil Lynott's Old Town and Radio 2 always play the blasted Corrs version.

Never liked them and every time I hear their version of the song, I certainly never will.

Corneliusmurphy · 28/04/2020 08:32

My favourite thing about the corrs is the the cd:uk Saturday morning show impression with ant, dec and cat in bad wigs and someone behind them wearing a paper bag being Jim Grin

The thing with covers is probably the version that you actually hear first sticks with you, or occasionally the original basically disappears without a trace. I only found out Natalie imbruglia’s Torn was a cover last year!

Lifeasweknow · 28/04/2020 08:34

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I said Dolly Partons original Confused

@cooldarkroom I quite like the one with MJB

@NotSorry yes, I hated the new version of Higher Love. There is a cover by Tyler James which I like but its still not as good as the original

Yes, I've abased myself lower down, @Lifeasweknow.

I love the idea of an International Covers Tribunal! It would be kept busy. William Shatner would have been locked up long ago.

Lifeasweknow · 28/04/2020 08:37

@Corneliusmurphy I didnt know Torn was a cover either. I'm off to listen to the original

OP posts:
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2020 08:37

That's true, Cornelius. I was amazed to learn that A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall was a Dylan song as I first heard the Roxy Music version in the early 70s (still love that - my husband thinks it's appalling Grin).

Mumshappy · 28/04/2020 08:38

Fleetwood mac are legends. The Coors were only given a recording contract because of their looks they are mediocre.
