Aibu regarding Fleetwood Mac

This is terribly trivial, I am aware.
I was watching Peter Kay's Car Share and there was a part where Peter Kay's character said that the Fleetwood Mac version of Dreams was better than The Coors version. This is one of my all time favourite songs and personally think The Coors butchered it, however my sister said The Coors version is better.
AIBU to say Fleetwood Mac's original is far better than The Coors version.

Another vote for Fleetwood Mac! Wonderful.

I thought Whitney Houston was awful on 'I will always love you' - far too much dramatic warbling and fake passion.

Talking about cover versions, I have always thought that any songs covered from Carole King's 'Tapestry' were a travesty. She has such a wonderful voice and so many songs on that album are classics.

Iggi999 · 28/04/2020 09:33

The Coors sounds like the Father Ted version of The Corrs.
Feck.

Hingeandbracket · 28/04/2020 09:38

@StinkyWizzleteets

Your summary of the Coors is marvellous - please write more popular music criticism. Fart in a hurricane - I'm 'having that.

Hingeandbracket · 28/04/2020 09:41

Also tears for fears mad world over that gary jules version.

Tears for Fears ripped off a bit of Matthew and Son by Yousef Islam for the main melodic hook.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 28/04/2020 09:44

Not the best from a vocal pov, but for an emotional punch in the gut, here's the version of Hallelujah that aired on Saturday Night Live in the US right after Trump won the election.

Hingeandbracket · 28/04/2020 09:45

No remake is ever better than the original artist's work.

Most of the time I agree, but Joe Jackson and William Shatner's version. of Pulp's common people is fantastic - and I say that as a huge Jarvis Cocker fan.

Jux · 28/04/2020 09:45

Brefugee you can't mean that about Gimme Shelter, surely? You can't (can you?).

Wink

But really......

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/04/2020 09:46

Joe Cocker singing With A Little Help From My Friends is vastly superior to the Beatles' original imho.

Jux · 28/04/2020 09:46

I love Shatner taking the piss. I'd never buy any though.

dayswithaY · 28/04/2020 09:48

The worst cover bar none is Under the Bridge by All Saints, they murdered it. The record company exec who told them to do it should be shot. The Corrs were always style over substance. Didn't one of them have an affair with Bono? Explains a lot.

Lifeasweknow · 28/04/2020 09:58

@dayswithaY oh god, I had completely forgotten about All Saints version of Under the Bridge. Absolutely awful

Who's in the 3% that said YABU?! Baffling.

Absolutely agree with a PP that said you're basically on a hiding to nothing if you cover classic songs - or are so arrogant that you believe you can do better.

Rockbird · 28/04/2020 10:05

FM obviously wins. But I do like the Corrs.

Atomic Kitten's cover of the Tide is High though... AngryAngryAngry Don't even start me on that.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/04/2020 10:05

Whoah there, Ringo Starr has the voice of an angel!Grin
Which reminds me of that gag...
Is Ringo Starr the best drummer in the world?
He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles...

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 28/04/2020 10:06

This thread keeps offering up new musical abominations!

Fuss · 28/04/2020 10:08

DH won a Corrs CD in a raffle years ago. Epic piss taking ensued and it went to the charity shop unopened. Bit of a standing joke now as the only thing he’s ever won Grin

There are few covers i prefer to originals but one is New Found Glory’s Kiss Me which i like much more than the sixpence none the richer version.

Lifeasweknow · 28/04/2020 10:11

@Fuss good shout with the charity shop! I like New Found Glorys version of Kiss Me. I can't decide if I prefer it or not.

Didn't Prince himself say he preferred Sinaid O'Connor' s version of Nothing Compares to You?

NotSorry · 28/04/2020 10:19

@UnfinishedSymphon

Sorry, I absolutely hate that version. It is definitely not a song that should be shouted - a bit like Whitney doing Dolly - so over the top it’s cringe

Cam2020 · 28/04/2020 10:23

Definitely not BU!

I remember buying the CD single of the Cors' version as a tween and my dad did that annoying dad thing of playing me the original (on vinyl) to prove a point. All the Cors did was sing in a boring voice and put it to Irish folky music. Not a patch on the Mac and neither would it without the meaning behind it.

DaysEChain · 28/04/2020 10:23

Davis insipid gray destroying 'say hello wave goodbye' by soft cell. An absolute crime against music.

I was actually going to come on this thread specifically to ask what people thought of these two versions of this song, but I think you've told me! Grin

My own thoughts aren't so clear-cut. I really, really like them both but they are like two different songs - Soft Cell waspish and camp, David Gray kind of meditative and sad. I don't find it, or him, insipid.

dayswithaY · 28/04/2020 10:25

I thought Prince and Sinead fell out over her cover. Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U is infinitely superior and less well known. Lots of people think it's her original song.

dayswithaY · 28/04/2020 10:29

I think the point about Say Hello Wave Goodbye is that it can't be anything but camp and over the top mainly due to the lyrics. It just isn't meant to be meditative - some songs aren't.

JoeGrundyWasMyRoleModel · 28/04/2020 10:33

@rslsys
No remake is ever better than the original artist's work.
Except for Bob Dylan, everybody else's versions of his stuff are much better than his

Even as a lifelong fan of Dylan I would normally agree, however this thread has alerted me to the existence of Roxy Music's cover of Hard Rain's Gonna Fall. It's abysmal and unnecessarily upbeat. Can't wait to find out that there is a Corrs cover of It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding).

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 28/04/2020 10:34

I can’t even remember The Corrs version

Totally insignificant

Rumours is a fantastic album. After Fleetwood Mac became more commercial and dull in comparison to their early work. Best Fleetwood Mac music is with Peter Green and also when Danny Kirwan was in the band. Dragonfly is so dreamy its sublime listening on a sunny day laying in a field intoxicated Smile
