AIBU to expect year 11 DD to......

.....Get on with some homework?

Anyone here struggling with their year 11?

I get that having the rug pulled from under their feet was brutal re school and GCSE's but DD refuses to get up, argues, and is not attempting to keep up with the subjects she will need for A levels.

Please tell me your yr 11 is the same!

Year 12 and 10 here, stressed very stressed because they aren't engaged...

Mine is going to college. Have heard nothing from them. So he is doing nothing.

Nope not made my year 11 do any work. He has a place at college that he has already been accepted. I'm not sure on other schools but we had an email from his yesterday to say that there will be no more work set for them and they will now concentrate on the transition from year 11 to year 12 and going to college

My year 11 daugher is doing no school work at all. Will read around her A level subjects sometime in the summer and I am fine with that. She is relaxed and happy.

What's the point? Their exams have been cancelled and exam boards are accepting the work schools have, whether it's finished or not. So what would they be studying for?

Year 11s would only be revising for exams now, if they were in school and wouldn’t have any work post exams so I’m not sure what work you want your Yr 11 to be doing.

@Myownwendyhouse do you mean the college? Why would you have heard from them? They’re probably pretty busy with their own students right now - most of whom will still be continuing with their courses for the time being.

What work is there to do? It would only be revision of what they’ve done. You are fighting a battle that needn’t begin.

Honestly yes. She should be revising for GCSEs now and she knows it. Not having those GCSEs to revise for is a huge demotivation.
A levels are there to start from scratch.
She wouldn't be doing A-Level prep or learning anything A-Level prep related even if she were at school.
Her what's the point, is probably valid.
Try and encourage her to find something cool to do to keep busy, learn a language or a completly random skill. But if she says no, that's OK to.

@DitheringBlidiot I guess some might hope to be prepairing for A levels or revising what has been learned so it is not all forgotten by September and they can just focus on starting the a level material rather then revision of what has been forgotten. It is easy to forget information that has not been revised for a long time

A Levels don't generally require any prior knowledge, ordinarily she would not be preparing for them, so there's not much reason for her to do so now.

I didn't know, really, what a levels I wanted to do at this point i. Yr11. I'm pre mobile phone era, so if have been writing stories, listening to loud music and annoying my parents. Which is pretty much what i did even without lockdown.

My dd was bereft after the exams were cancelled and found the first couple of weeks after school closed very hard.

I let her drift around until after the Easter holidays but now she is doing bridging work from school for the subjects she’s doing at A level.

She’s also learning the Highway Code and she’s doing Duolingo and stuff like that.

I really wouldn't bother with school work for a yr 11. I wouldn't have bothered if I was them. Maybe learn something together if you have time. Something to exercise their brain but that's enjoyable. Sign language would be good on their cv?

Maybe get her to focus on a hobby to keep her busy? It doesn’t sound healthy to be in bed all day but I don’t think you’ve got much chance of making her do school work when the work has been completed, it’s just revision now. I wouldn’t be wasting my time revising for exams I’m not going to take.

We're still on Easter holidays but DD has spent them doing art and sewing which will help for one of her a levels. Textbook arrives on Monday for her science subject and she'll be going through some of that each day. Third a level is a new subject for her so she's been doing some reading for that already. She's not 100% motivated but is sensible enough to see that six months off will make it much harder to learn in September.

She wouldn’t be doing this if she’d done her GCSEs. The long summer break is the pay off for working hard up to the exams!

Her long (er) break is a pay off for having her whole school career crumble, plus having to live in lockdown.

I’m a teacher - I wouldn’t advise you push work. Maybe see if there’s something else she’d like to learn/do that’s totally not school based. The Y11s have been dealt a shitty hand.

I don't thin any of mine would be doing any in those circumstances.
My Yr13 isn't.
If I'm honest, 15 yr old me wouldn't be either.

Y11 DS has done piece of school work since lockdown began. He is doing on online coding class for an hour a day at my insistence. The rest of the time it’s youtube, chatting with friends, games, sleeping, and hanging out with us.

I'd also have been worrying about the months of my youth I was losing and how I.was ever supposed to get a boyfriend or part time job now. my black.nail.varnish would have to be eked out. School work would not have been.on.the to.do list.
