To wonder whether you still read magazines?

I was just watching a film that heavily features magazines (particularly women's magazines, think Cosmo/Glamour), and realised I haven't read anything other than Radio Times and a food mag in years! I wonder how they still keep going with the changing market and abundance of stuff one can access online these days. Do you still read magazines? Which ones do you like?

I do but it’s BBC history magazine. I don’t think that’s what you were looking for.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/04/2020 19:51

No, I did in my twenties. I think around 10 years or so ago I began to be a little more aware of the impact magazines could have, particularly the marketing and aspirational nonsense. I don't buy them and wouldn't read them if they were in the house; there's no appeal.

Wonderbag · 25/04/2020 19:51

Nope. I have mumsnet now Grin

Burntmybiscuits · 25/04/2020 19:51

@selfsettling3 Absolutely! My post was a general one, as I would be interested in knowing what's out there and perhaps not blindly walking past the aisle next time I'm in the supermarket.

No, I read them all the time in my teens and early 20s but now they're a fiver and I'm a lot less interested in what they have to say

redcarbluecar · 25/04/2020 19:54

Not really, no. Occasionally Private Eye but not that often.

Randomness12 · 25/04/2020 19:54

I do very occasionally, if one appeals when I’m that aisle. However, I’m nearly always disappointed. I’ve picked up Grazia, Marie Claire and Red this year and I wouldn’t rush to buy any of them again. Far too full of adverts plus I have a daughter and in acutely aware of the poor body image impact. Think I’ll stick to Tesco mag and ideal Home

Randomness12 · 25/04/2020 19:55

Sorry far too many typos! Been a long day!

Burntmybiscuits · 25/04/2020 19:56

I used to read SO many magazines between the ages of about 8 to 21! However, in the last ten years, the world has changed so much, and most similar entertainment/digest I can access elsewhere. Still love books. I began to wake up to the negative aspects of women's magazines, too. I'd like to think there isn't as much negative portrayal of women in magazines these days, but I guess I am probably wrong there?

Used to, religiously! But have stopped in the last couple of years. Not the price, although many are far too expensive, but the content is lacking. Way too many ads...can read better articles online for free TBH. Red is the worst offender! I once (sad AF I know) counted how many pages of ads versus pages of content...I vowed never to buy it again, it was that bad...

Littlebb2020 · 25/04/2020 19:59

I read the real life mags like Bella and a few others. Used to get a reveal magazine every few weeks but rarely now. I buy a few in the airport before a flight though x

PinkiOcelot · 25/04/2020 20:00

I can’t remember the last time I bought a magazine. Years!

Fimofriend · 25/04/2020 20:02

I mainly read them for crafts and fashion. Now I have Pinterest there is no need. I occasionally read Cosmo when I was younger, but there seems to so little actual content these days. The makeup advice is often overblown. It is like if a magazine wrote about food in a way that caters to anorectics. Now that they are also claiming that trans women are women I have decided never to buy it again.

wolfmom · 25/04/2020 20:02

Only craft related ones and most of them through an app

Burntmybiscuits · 25/04/2020 20:02

Anyone remember Sneak? Those were the days!

I enjoy reading Good Housekeeping or Cosmo or similar at the hairdressers but the only magazine I buy for myself is The Big Issue (currently by subscription). It’s £2.50 which I think is good value, although some weeks I’ll buy it then forget it’s in my bag. But I do enjoy reading when I sit down.
I get the kids the Beano and occasionally the Week Junior. DS1 has had subscriptions to Aquila and a science magazine for kids in the past too.

mrsBtheparker · 25/04/2020 20:06

I get Private Eye, currently Private Eye-solation, delivered, wouldn't miss it for the world, so often they are investiagating issues years before the mainstream press, eg Cryil Smith. If I'm in the mood I will pick up Take a Break to see how long the competitions take to complete!

hopeishere · 25/04/2020 20:06

I have a Tes subscription but it's pretty shite. The clothes are way too expensive for their readership.

I sometimes buy Grazia. It's ok. And Good Housekeeping, it's pretty good.

hopeishere · 25/04/2020 20:06

Red not Tes.

Slazengerbag · 25/04/2020 20:07

I have the Readly app. I read craft magazines that are really expensive (£6.99+) gardening, cooking and home magazines. The app is £9.99 a month and I love it.

1Morewineplease · 25/04/2020 20:07

I love Sainsbury’s magazine as the recipes are brilliant and affordable. I’ve stopped buying Good Food as the recipes started to get a bit bizarre. I also regularly read Gardener’s World and Garden News magazines ( love gardening.)
I occasionally buy crossword magazines.
My days of Vogue, Cosmo etc... are long gone.
I loathe tittle tattle shite like ‘Hello.’

CherryPavlova · 25/04/2020 20:09

I buy one for the journey home, I’ve been working in London. Probably a couple of times a month.

imnottoofussed · 25/04/2020 20:10

I also have the readly app and thinks it's well worth it. I read the odd gossip/celeb/fashion mag and the Sainsbury's mag on there. Also occasionally look through and read health and fitness ones, good housekeeping, travel mags etc

cacaca · 25/04/2020 20:11

Not so much now, especially as Glamour is no longer printed and is online only. I only tend to buy if there is a good freebie - worth more than the cost of the magazine.

LoadsaBlusher · 25/04/2020 20:12

Not any more
Used to spend a fortune and even had a subscription for Company magazine

I think nowadays everything is on Instagram / mumsnet that I want to read about or look at and it’s free.

When I do get the v odd chance to read a magazine at the hairdressers ( approx once a year 😆) then I only notice how many adverts there are ...
