To wonder whether you still read magazines?

I was just watching a film that heavily features magazines (particularly women's magazines, think Cosmo/Glamour), and realised I haven't read anything other than Radio Times and a food mag in years! I wonder how they still keep going with the changing market and abundance of stuff one can access online these days. Do you still read magazines? Which ones do you like?

Yes!
All the members magazines I get (RNLI, National Trust, English Heritage and the RSPB). Read them all religiously.
And I have BBC Wildlife and BBC History on subscription.

But I would put reading as my top hobby. It is almost an obsession. And the magazines are things I really, really want to know about.

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 25/04/2020 20:15

I used to read Grazia every week for years and years. I like the mix of fashion, interesting long articles, and I really like Polly Vernon's column and the guy who reviews the tv- I really like his recommendations.

But it has definitely gone on to the non-essential items list and actually I don't think I will go back to it now I have broken the habit.

Frariedeamin · 25/04/2020 20:15

Another Private Eye subscriber here. I also recently purchased the first copy of a Needle felting magazine but it was shoddy - I could have done a better job using PowerPoint. I occasionally buy a sewing mag or 2 depending on the free patterns!

Randomword6 · 25/04/2020 20:17

I stopped reading Women's mags about the same time I stopped trying to diet. I definitely think they were bad for my body image (in the 90's) Maybe some are more body positive now.

HermioneWeasley · 25/04/2020 20:17

Nope, they’ve got absolutely nothing new to say to me. I don’t care about other readers loves, or how to get a beach body, or what x celebrity is promoting, or what unnecessary tat to buy to clutter up my home.

winterinmadeira · 25/04/2020 20:22

Yes I have women’s health and fit and well each month. It takes my mind off everything and helps me relax.

Winniewonka · 25/04/2020 20:24

Yes, but I am probably older than most of you. I get Woman & Home and Country Living which were bought as subscription gifts. I swap them for Good Housekeeping and Prima with two friends so we each get to read all of them.
It takes me back to my childhood swapping the Bunty comics!

Burntmybiscuits · 25/04/2020 20:25

I do wonder how so many of these women's mags are still going when the majority of women here so far have the same opinion as me (re accessing info online, negative body image etc.). I guess we are just a small sample!

By that comment, I meant exclusively the ad riddled fashion/gossipy ones!

No, I haven’t since my teens. Used to enjoy NME magazine but it sadly no longer exists.

Lonoxo · 25/04/2020 20:27

When the internet was in its infancy, I used to buy loads of magazine. The start of sleb culture - used to buy Now every week. Short lived Look magazine. Cosmo. I liked reading Red magazine in my 20s. Now I like Psychologies magazine. I don’t buy a lot of mags though, tends to be for long train journeys only. I would be interested in Readly if I had more time to read but think it would be wasted at the moment. Maybe the subscription model is the only way for magazines to be sustainable in the current climate.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 25/04/2020 20:27

No - I got a free subscription to Red from Lloyds. I opened the first one I got and then the rest were given away unread.

No interest in them.

MilesToGoBeforeISleep · 25/04/2020 20:29

I have a subscription to a home magazine. I get weirdly excited when it arrives every month!

Ragwort · 25/04/2020 20:29

Very occasionally if someone passes one or to me but they are all so similar, used to like a Good Housekeeping/Women and Home but get a bit sick of all the articles on self made women making a fortune from brownies or chutneys .... or endless articles about ‘self help’ and ‘not doing too much’ at the same time as features on beautiful houses, fabulous recipes, diets and exotic holidays Grin - do people really live like that?

cupcakehurricane101 · 25/04/2020 20:31

I used to read my mum's Bella and Take a break as a 8 year old, then moved to Mizz, J-17, then Glamour and a few years ago Good Housekeeping!! Never thought I was the type 😅 I don't buy magazines anymore though, more books these days. Magazines are a waste of money when most content you can find free online.

Viviennemary · 25/04/2020 20:31

Not much. Sometimes I read the Good Housekeeping if there's an interesting article. Sometimes I read Ideal Home and others if I'm thinking about decorating. But reading about it is as far as I get. Used to read craft magazines but don't bother now.

Tumbleweed101 · 25/04/2020 20:33

I like a magazine to read but they have got as expensive as books lately so I'd rather just buy a book. If they were a bit cheaper I'd still buy some regularly.

SillyYak · 25/04/2020 20:36

I’ve had a subscription to Red since I picked up a copy in hospital ten years ago, but I’m going off it a bit now. Subscriptions to LRB and Private Eye also.

Does anyone remember Sugar magazine from the nineties? I loved that. Also J17, especially the reader competition where you won a makeover, shopping trip, a bedroom makeover and a date with one of their male models! Obviously I never won...

Lonoxo · 25/04/2020 20:37

I’ve never bought Vogue or Harper Bazaars. I think the Sofia Coppola film ‘Bling Ring’ and the recent J-Lo film ‘Hustlers’ were based on articles from one of those mags so there’s still good content out there. Probably the dip in quality has resulted from less money being put into mags.

Burntmybiscuits · 25/04/2020 20:39

@sillyyak I LOVED Sugar! And also J-17, Mizz and Sneak. I moved on to Glamour and Cosmo in my late teens. Anyone remember Shout magazine? My friends and I loved sniggering at the embarrassing moments and problem pages Blush

Lonoxo · 25/04/2020 20:39

@SillyYak. Yes, I remember Sugar!

Theworldisfullofgs · 25/04/2020 20:40

No. More expensive than some books and full of adverts. So you are paying for the adverts...

Lulu1919 · 25/04/2020 20:46

I buy one a week ...I read it in the bath !!!

AntennaReborn · 25/04/2020 20:59

I used to, and I still like the idea of a women's magazine, but I can't remember the last time I looked at a cover and thought "I need to buy this".

I have no interest in weight loss advice, what the celebrities of the moment have to say, or "supercharging my career" or any of the other nonsense that is normally featured on the covers.

If I buy a magazine these days, it's New Scientist, or National Geographic, or a history magazine.

I have realised that I like to learn something from what I read

Mucklowe · 25/04/2020 21:02

They're just vehicles for advertising now.
