To wonder whether you still read magazines?

I was just watching a film that heavily features magazines (particularly women's magazines, think Cosmo/Glamour), and realised I haven't read anything other than Radio Times and a food mag in years! I wonder how they still keep going with the changing market and abundance of stuff one can access online these days. Do you still read magazines? Which ones do you like?

I buy Blocks Magazine (a adult Lego magazine) and my husband buys Airfix Magazine. I sometimes buy a craft magazine as a treat or sometimes a mag like SFX if I am going on a train journey.
I worked in a newsagents in the 90s and we were never that busy so I pretty much read everything going and when I left that job I spent a small fortune on magazines each month. Women's glossies, film mags like Empire, music ones likes Q. I was a bit obsessed.
Many of the women's ones I used to read (Company etc) are now long gone but I am always amazed that those horrible real life magazines like Take a Break are still churned out every week. Who buys them? Always horrible stories about child abuse or discovering your husbands had an affair with your twin sister or finding out you have a dreadful illness. Horrible things those magazines.

PickAChew · 25/04/2020 21:53

I tend to read foodie or crafty magazines such as Delicious, Sainsburys Magazine and Waitrose Food mag or The Knitter.

Also not averse to flicking through DS1's Buses mag.

UponTheBlueGuitar · 25/04/2020 21:54

Only Viz magazine.

Always hated the glossies tbh

BrieAndChilli · 25/04/2020 21:56

I also have Readly. Much cheaper than actually buying them, you don’t have to lug magazines around and can read as many as you want.

Notmyrealname855 · 25/04/2020 21:58

Reporting is obviously more up to date online - I look at Instagram and Man Repeller for “lifestyle” stuff

For analysis I like Private Eye and The Week

bookmum08 · 25/04/2020 21:58

PickAChew my Dad reads Buses and one of the railway ones. I have to admit I often read them when visiting. They are actually quite interesting.

PickAChew · 25/04/2020 22:00

@1Morewineplease I've found the same with Good Food. The recipes used to be proper recipes using a range of techniques with a chance to learn about different cuisines but now they're all like something off the losing team on ready steady cook. I picked up Delicious a few months ago and it was quite refreshing.

ListeningQuietly · 25/04/2020 22:00

Weekly / Fortnightly / Monthly / Quarterly magazines give reasoned analysis

Notmyrealname855 · 25/04/2020 22:01

(One of the things I hate about fashion mags is this “trendy” message of accept yourself, that all ethnicities and body types and ages are beautiful.... but the brands that advertise in them still push this image of emaciated teenage blond girls... and actually the mags seem to lazily repeat that in most of their articles, there’s no real change)

I like Red sometimes but it’s a bit Goop-y at times

Years ago I used to buy a few magazines every month, especially Prima, Essentials, Marie Claire, Paris Match and Good Housekeeping. Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair when I was in my twenties.

I stopped Cosmo, Vanity Fair and Marie Claire because they had no relevance to my lifestyle - I was not a wealthy, successful, stick-thin career girl, and had no interest in expensive fashion. I stopped buying Prima and Essentials because they changed the format and no longer included paper patterns - plus my children were getting older, so I was no longer interested in stuff about little ones.

Although I still quite like Good Housekeeping, I don’t bother to buy it anymore because there are too many adverts. Nor do I buy Paris Match anymore as I lost interest in it.

These days I only buy hobby magazines, and then only if there’s an interesting freebie with it, which covers the cost.

Pelleas · 25/04/2020 22:02

We have Private Eye on subscription - other than that, very rarely. I've no interest in glossy or lifestyle type magazines.

wiltingflower · 25/04/2020 22:03

I used to love reading magazines! A real joy of mine from childhood all the way until I left home for uni. I've not read paper copies of magazines for several years now though but have recently downloaded my local library's recommended app which has quite a few magazines with lots of current and past copies from up to a couple of years ago. I've been reading Red and Good Housekeeping mainly.

BackforGood · 25/04/2020 22:03

Only for a flight / by the pool on holiday.
Otherwise I've not bought one in 30 years probably.
I used to read them quite recently in the Drs / Dentist / hospital waiting rooms before they all got taken away (infection control ?).

Youngatheart00 · 25/04/2020 22:03

I subscribe to Grazia and Red and read them religiously, decent content.

Was a total magazine junkie as a kid / teenager.

Started with TV Hits and gaming magazines (for SNES and Mega Drive!), then graduated to J17, Sugar, Bliss, Mizz and gasp More, which was always the naughtiest (anyone remember ‘position of the fortnight’?!)

In my 20s I used to buy trashy mags like Heat, Closer and Now but they don’t really interest me now.

Pinkchocolate · 25/04/2020 22:03

I do. A couple that I subscribe to that are work related and one Celeb type magazine that I buy out of habit and skip through most of because I have no interest in Reality Tv.

BackforGood · 25/04/2020 22:03

I've not read a newspaper (in print) for years and years and years, either.
I used to like reading the paper.

Just discovered pocket mag app which gives access to 250 different magazines on every subject for 9.99 a month, it’s really good

formerbabe · 25/04/2020 22:10

I used to love magazines in my teenage years and my twenties. Would buy several a week. Haven't bought one in years.

Pickles89 · 25/04/2020 22:11

No. I would if 'Zest' was still in print though. God I miss Zest, it was my ideal mag.

Drysunshine · 25/04/2020 22:12

I bought Grazia last week for the first time and it wasn’t too bad. First magazine I’ve bought in ages. Actually found interesting bits of articles.
I’ve been hiding from the kids out in the garden and the WiFi is rubbish out there so needed something to read!

Patsypie · 25/04/2020 22:15

If you have a library card you can join Pressreader. Totally free and has thousands of international and UK mags and newspapers. It's wonderful but my interest in womens mags has waned - same old shite. I love the newspapers though

Pickles89 · 25/04/2020 22:16

@Notmyrealname855

I don't know if it's still the case, but German magazines used to use nice normal looking people for models, and didn't photoshop them to the point they were unrecognisable as human beings, the way British and American mags do. I really do think there should be a law about airbrushing to the extent 'we' do.

lakeswimmer · 25/04/2020 22:17

Yes, sometimes, but generally interiors magazines because I like interesting or beautiful buildings; mostly Elle Decoration or Living Etc.

I occasionally read Country Living and Country Life. I don't read women's magazines any more as I'm not really interested in fashion and beauty. If I'm waiting at the hairdressers I'll flick through Hello but don't generally know who any of the people in it are.

InFiveMins · 25/04/2020 22:20

Used to buy a magazine every week.

Don't buy any now other than a TV guide a magazine if that counts.
