To wonder whether you still read magazines?

I was just watching a film that heavily features magazines (particularly women's magazines, think Cosmo/Glamour), and realised I haven't read anything other than Radio Times and a food mag in years! I wonder how they still keep going with the changing market and abundance of stuff one can access online these days. Do you still read magazines? Which ones do you like?

I get Red and Grazia delivered, and sometimes pick up Closer. I like to read them in the bath.

SpeedofaSloth · 25/04/2020 21:09

Yes, on RLB library app, but I don't like the women's magazines very much anymore which I find a bit sad really. I like New Scientist and the homes/ furnishing ones better.

Babooshkar · 25/04/2020 21:10

No subscriptions but I love a good travel mag

MaybeDoctor · 25/04/2020 21:11

I buy them when I am about to go on holiday, as I enjoy them for the plane journey or poolside. Generally Red, Good Housekeeping or occasionally Psychologies.

What I like to do is keep an eye out for another English-speaking family then, on the last morning, I offer the woman my magazines. She is always incredibly appreciative!

MaybeDoctor · 25/04/2020 21:14

I know that some people might be insulted by being offered magazines, but I have done this 8 - 10 times and haven't misjudged it yet.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 25/04/2020 21:16

I've just started again because Hampshire libraries let you borrow them online for free. Amazing archive 😊

roses2 · 25/04/2020 21:17

I regularly read business magazines (~3 per week) because we get them free at work.

Since the lockdown I'm only reading online literature (mainly mumsnet!)

WineAndTiramisu · 25/04/2020 21:19

Used to get "female" magazines when younger, but only the good food magazine now, which I have an on/off subscription to. Got fed up of the fact that most of the women's magazines were 75% advertising/weight loss programs

TheSquitz · 25/04/2020 21:22

I buy The Peoples Friend because it makes me feel closer to my mum. She died last July and used to get one every week when we went shopping. When she was in hospital, I used to read the stories to her. I also like Womans Weekly as it isn't celebrity driven.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 25/04/2020 21:23

I love magazines and go through phases of which ones I buy. For the last few years I have been getting mostly house ones like ideal home, country living etc. I also sometimes get food ones like Delicious or the Sainsbury's magazine. If I'm getting a train I might get a bunch of take a break type ones. I read Red, Elle etc in the hairdresser.

FlamingoAndJohn · 25/04/2020 21:24

Dh and I were just talking about magazines last night.

I used to read Just 17 and More as a teen. The Red, Take a Break and Fortean Times. I subscribed to Fortean Times for years but I stopped a couple of years ago.
I’ll sometimes read Good Housekeeping and The Lady.

There used to be a market stall in our town that sold old magazines, new but last months. That was a bargain.

I now have Readly although not all the time. I cancelled it a while ago and they have offered me two month free so I’m having that for lockdown.

JE17 · 25/04/2020 21:26

Another Private Eye subscriber here, I wouldn't give that up. Otherwise, no, I don't read any magazines nowadays. Was a big J17 fan back in the day, and my DM buys all the Take A Break type mags so I grew up reading those.

Sparklesocks · 25/04/2020 21:28

Only if I go on a long distance train journey, and that’s only ever a few times a year. I like to get a couple of glossys and Percy pigs - it’s a fun treat. Also sometimes at the airport too.
In my mid 20s I used to buy loads - heat every week, Marie Claire, glamour - not that arsed now but it’s nice to keep up the train tradition.

Mary46 · 25/04/2020 21:28

Loved the monthly ones but so pricey now 7euro in Dublin.! I like Bella. Buy Prima every 2 months good bit in that. Red crap all glossy ads in it.

CMOTDibbler · 25/04/2020 21:29

I get Outdoor Swimmer magazine, and DH gets Camping. I did have a Readly subscription to read Womens Running and some other things, but stopped as it wasn't worth it.

notacooldad · 25/04/2020 21:30

I've not bought a Cosmo Marie Claire, Red etc for years and years. Are they.all stil going. I went over to my sport and hubby magazines such as MBR and trail but havent bought them in years either. I get the info I need from groups and National Bodies on FB.

katscamel · 25/04/2020 21:35

Good Housekeeping, Psychologies if there's a voucher otherwise can't justify the cost.
My mum has a pile of Take a Break type mags that she was given and keeps in the loo.... sone of them are so bad they're funny.
In my teenage days it was Just 17, Smash Hits, and heavy metal magazines.

Rubychard · 25/04/2020 21:35

Another readly user. Absolutely love it. £7.99 per month

SerenDippitty · 25/04/2020 21:40

I didn't for years but now have started buying Platinum, a new magazine aimed at the 50+ age group. it's quite good actually.

worldsworststepfordwife · 25/04/2020 21:42

Never read a magazine in years, I was a Red subscriber for years no idea why as I wasn’t their target market by a long stretch, I’m a suburban northern housewife not a London centric yummy mummy entrepreneur/career woman. Anyway I used to keep them piled up and sharp realised I could be a magazine journalist I wouldn’t need to open the Jan 18 issue to know what was in it I just had to open jan 17 they’d be basically the same with updated clothes that sold out a month ago rather than 13 months ago

SerenDippitty · 25/04/2020 21:44

If you belong to your local library you can subscribe to RB digital and download loads of magazines for free including Good Housekeeping, Red etc. Not Platinum at the moment, though!

granadagirl · 25/04/2020 21:44

Read them all the time on Readly subscription, I’m in my 60’s and read lots of
Different ones, and a great variety for the price. Had Readly for years now.

Maria53 · 25/04/2020 21:44

I don't read typical womens magazines anymore.

I have a subscription to Womankind which is amazing and I read Oh Comely too. Real women who are not airbrushed and stories of lots of people as well as celebs.

ListeningQuietly · 25/04/2020 21:46

I subscribe to LOADS of paper magazines
I read in bed for over an hour a night

Mary46 · 25/04/2020 21:50

Yes bought Platinum good mix in it and not full of adverts! A good read
