To wonder whether you still read magazines?

I was just watching a film that heavily features magazines (particularly women's magazines, think Cosmo/Glamour), and realised I haven't read anything other than Radio Times and a food mag in years! I wonder how they still keep going with the changing market and abundance of stuff one can access online these days. Do you still read magazines? Which ones do you like?

I stopped years ago when I realised they just made me want to buy things.

I still occasionally read Vogue although it's not as good as it used to be, and I like World of Interiors. I'm more likely to read The Week or the Spectator these days though, must be getting old...

Roominmyhouse · 25/04/2020 22:21

I have a kindle unlimited subscription which includes access to some magazines so I read some of those, but other than that I only read them at the hairdressers. I think the last time I bought one was at the airport about a year ago to read on a flight.

Bounceyflouncey · 25/04/2020 22:22

I used to have all of the animal of farthing wood magazines, then on to top of the pops and smash hits, followed by mizz and sugar; before graduating onto more magazine ahhhh. I did actually get a magazine sub to Elle and Women's Health for Christmas, admittedly I can't afford anything in Elle but I like looking through, even at all of the adverts. I wouldn't buy either myself though and especially not for full price, because you can find most stuff out on the internet now and there's loads of articles etc you can read, I do enjoy actual books as well though so I do find it enjoyable flicking through. I'm really not sure how much longer they will limp on though, even for digital subs.

Bounceyflouncey · 25/04/2020 22:23

I sometimes buy new scientist if there's something interesting on the cover, but hardly ever as it's expensive.

user1471590586 · 25/04/2020 22:28

I bought a couple of gardening magazines recently for the free seeds, but other than that I no longer bother. None of the lifestyle type magazines appeal anymore, especially when there is so much online.

Bella2020 · 25/04/2020 22:29

I love reading magazines. It's just not the same trying to read them online. I subscribe to Woman & Home and Good Housekeeping. I'll also buy most issues of Prima and Red. Sometimes I'll read Woman and Woman's Own, too. I'd really miss print magazines if they became digital only.

Smurfy23 · 25/04/2020 22:31

Does cbeebies count? Its the only magazine ive bought in years....

BarbeDeMaman · 25/04/2020 22:33

I stopped in the aftermath of the 2008 recession. They no longer "spoke" to me. I lost everything in that time and they were still talking shite at me about rubbish I didnt need in my newly stripped life.

I had bought every edition of Red from its very first. I had bought Twinkle, Bunty, Mandy, Smash Hits, Just Seventeen, Marie Claire, and then Red. I grew up in Ireland so these magazines were always talking about things beyond my reach: BBC, Carnaby street, brands and shops I could only dream about. I paid a fortune to keep up with them and they fell from my world so badly in that recession. I have occasionally read them on RB Digital and they are so fluffy and insubstantial that I would never spend money on them again.

Even now. My teenagers have not seen their friends in 6 weeks and when I was doing my weekly shop on Wednesday I walked past the magazines and thought: maybe I'll treat them to a magazine (at almost €7/£6 a pop!) And then I realised: for them to look at ads for high end ads for brands for the sake of being a brand! In this day and age my teens are not seduced by that thank goodness. Their day has been. They are so out of touch.

MinnieMountain · 25/04/2020 22:36

I've got a subscription to The Week.

I agree with @Bella2020. They've added digital subscriptions to the print subscriptions in case the post goes to pot but I really hope it doesn't come to that.

Hippopotas · 25/04/2020 22:40

Yes by using News+ on my ipad

BertieBotts · 25/04/2020 22:42

Nope. I used to use them to fill a spare few minutes here and there - I have a smartphone that does that now.

TeaLibrary · 25/04/2020 22:43

No I dont bother with magazines these days. Usually expensive and filled with meaningless glossy adverts.

londonrach · 25/04/2020 22:45

No, not for years...loved bunty, judy, mandy as a teenager. Late bella, best. I really cant remember last mag ive read, do have some mandy judy etc comic library must dig out from a drawer

WaktiWapnasi · 25/04/2020 22:50

Not any more (unless its gardening or cooking). I used to read "womens magazines" in my twenties until I realised what a load of misogynistic claptrap they were and went cold Turkey. That is not to say I wouldn't flick through one at the hairdressers but that in itself is a rare occurrence.

rednsparkley · 25/04/2020 22:57

I used to buy loads of mags back in the days when I had plenty time to read. I used to get Bunty as a kid and then progressed to Jackie. I moved on to NME, Kerrang, The Face mags and then Cosmo, Marie Claire. I also used to love sitting in my grotty student bedsit reading Ideal Home and Living etc and planning how to kit out my furture penthouse Grin
Then I moved on to Heat and OK (never Hello) and Closer and all the other shitty sleb mags. For a while I had a subscription to Grazia and GQ but I let those slide. I started buying Woman & Home and was considering subscribing but last month they ran a dreadful, one-sided, factually suspect, fluff article about a transgender person which never once mentioned any concerns and I put my credit card back in my wallet. Shoddy journalism.

I must have spent a bloody fortune over the years - no wonder I still don't own a penthouse Grin

Bakedpotatoandgin · 25/04/2020 23:04

I'm 20, I've never bought a magazine, although I did like the Art Attack one that seemed to be popular in party bags when I was about six. DM buys gardening magazines and Good Food, which I leaf through occasionally but I mostly go online

flirtygirl · 25/04/2020 23:21

Yes around 10 every month.

I like reading. I'm in normally before lock down and I read all day.

I read books, online articles also

Ontheboardwalk · 25/04/2020 23:26

I’ve just found out that some magazines are included as part of my prime subscription. I’m going to have a look at that

ItWasntMyFault · 25/04/2020 23:27

I dont read them myself unless I'm going on a flight as they're a waste of money and too many adds.
I do pay a subscription for my elderly mother though but she can't get out much and doesn't have the internet so that's totally different.

WildOrchids67 · 25/04/2020 23:31

I get Inside Soap every week. As a teen I liked Top of the Pops and Shout, used to buy More in early 20s. I'll get Take a Break or That's Life for something to read while travelling.

PickAChew · 25/04/2020 23:46

I did buy Red, last year, as it had a freebie that was a massive tube of a face cream that I use, anyway and which cost 3-4 times the cover price.

I found it quite bizarre and nonsensical.

Pipandmum · 25/04/2020 23:51

I love magazines! I subscribed several - mostly home and interior magazines: House and Gardens, Country Living, 25 Beautiful Homes, Coast, World of Interiors, House Beautiful...
I do up properties and use tear sheets for inspiration. Pinterest is all well and good but I like the physical pages.

clippityclop · 25/04/2020 23:55

I get Good Housekeeping and Country Living. GH since I was about 19. Almost every month I consider cancelling it because so often many of the articles are on the same theme - how people overcame illness or set up amazing businesses from home, how to look younger etc. I love the cookery though. I miss She.

CorianderLord · 25/04/2020 23:57

Yes, I have a good food subscription and occasionally pick up a women's magazine

HopelessLayout · 26/04/2020 00:02

I finally let my subscription to National Geographic lapse… with regret, after 40 years! But I just wasn't bothering to look at it any more.
