To ask whether you would support a further lockdown?

Posting here simply as I don't know if voting can be enabled outside AIBU.

Vote yes- You would support further lockdown of this extent
Vote no- You would not support a lockdown of this extent after the current lockdown period

Personally, I would be happy for restrictions to slowly be lifted after this. Amongst my friends, I feel I am in the majority.

what I would say is we need to watch what happens in USA - goodness help them

flirtygirl · 25/04/2020 18:49

Umnoway

The USA has the highest nos in the world but per population ratio, it's not actually that bad.

Check out worldofmeters.

53 isn’t that old. Any takers for older?

I would support a further lockdown to an extent if I honestly though it would make the world safer to go out into when it ended.

I'm not convinced it will though.

We are both self employed. My business has grown rapidly over the last 3 years but mainly in the last year so the government help scheme will be useless. I'm very lucky that I've been able to continue working but my husband has been out of work for over 5 weeks now so I'm the sole earner and am having crippling migraines and insomnia due to stress and working online and wearing a head set for 8 hours a day plus extra hours prep. But I cannot take a day off as I'm the only one earning and keeping us afloat.

We have a 3 month mortgage holiday but if it goes on longer than that then we will lose everything we have worked for for the last 20 years including our home.

We are not all in this together at all.

I wish my biggest problem was being a bit bored and tightening our belts a little...

LilacTree1 · 25/04/2020 18:51

“"I agree, through my own stupidity, i will not put more pressure on the NHS by going to the hospital WHEN i catch covid-19"

A lot of us would sign that and make it a public document.

AlternativePerspective · 25/04/2020 18:52

So do you also think that smokers, alcoholics and the obese should not receive medical treatment? yes. If someone has been told in no uncertain terms that it is their lifestyle which is responsible for their health then it is their choice to do something about it. If they choose not to then no,I don’t think they should be entitled to treatment, especially given that treatment is less likely to be successful due to afore-mentioned lifestyles and so puts further strain on the NHS.

Popc0rn · 25/04/2020 18:52

@Frompcat

Those examples are very different from previous posters who are saying they will go against a further lockdown by visiting friends and family, organising play dates etc.

I'm not saying it's an ideal situation, but without a vaccine or treatment, the only way to stop the spread is to limit people's movements.

Umnoway · 25/04/2020 18:52

A bit surprised anyone would use the USA as a positive example right now, Christ.

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 18:52

Re signing the document - I have no problem with people taking risks and not using NHS. Up to them.

sobeyondthehills · 25/04/2020 18:52

I’m curious, as I posted previously, what are those saying they won’t support a further lockdown planning on doing? Are you going to protest or riot? I fail to see how you can rebel against it.

To be honest, there is very little I would be able to do, my partner can't go back to work and my son can't go back to school until the government lift the lockdown.

I don't drive, so can't go see my family and besides even if they did lift it, the rest of my family is shielding, so the best I could do is wave from the driveway, because I can imagine, they would probably stay in for at least another 3 weeks.

I am not sure what I would actually do that is difference as I am restricted and I didn't vote for this government, so saying I wouldn't vote for them again is not worth anything.

So the answer is probably nothing, but go to the park more often and maybe write an email to my MP saying why I don't support it. Ultimately if the government do think we should lock down further, then they need to put in place more things for people who have slipped through the cracks, while I am worried about the economy I am more worried about people who can no longer support themselves but can't get any help. They also need to come up with some come of plan to say what they will be doing, rather than the old lines of we can't say because we don't want to give people an excuse.

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 18:52

Well my granddad who is in his eighties WITH an underlying condition has also said he would rather take his chances than shield for a year, is that good enough for you Marsha?

midgebabe · 25/04/2020 18:53

There is no need at all for everyone to be exposed. None whatsoever.

Reduce the level of virus in society to a few hundred at most, then trace and trace every contact to keep the total number infected at any one time to around a few hundred

Since the population is 67,000,000
It takes many many years for everyone to be infected at the rate of a few hundred at a time

That is the only way to enable hospitals to go back to treating cancer patients, the only way that we might be able to travel abroad, the only way to avoid any more lockdowns

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 25/04/2020 18:53

I agree, through my own stupidity, i will not put more pressure on the NHS by going to the hospital WHEN i catch covid-19

So presumably you think that a smoker should be denied lung cancer treatment then?

LilacTree1 · 25/04/2020 18:53

Oh and haven’t you seen the reports about smokers being less likely to get it. I’m asthmatic, so have no skin in the game but bloody hell, it’s funny 😂

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 18:54

Those examples are very different from previous posters who are saying they will go against a further lockdown by visiting friends and family, organising play dates etc.

How? All the examples I gave put massive stress and pressure on the NHS, every year.

AlternativePerspective · 25/04/2020 18:54

Oh yes, let’s all aspire to be like the US. I suppose that at least if people are going out they can buy up plenty of disinfectant to make sure they don’t catch the virus eh?

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 18:54

Lol Frompcat not sure what you mean by good enough for you.

If he wants to take the risk go for it. I don’t (give a shit) care about his decisions. More what people are thinking when they visit their parents, hence the question.

Chillicheese123 · 25/04/2020 18:54

I’d support it if it was needed but I’m under no illusions we can completely just stop people getting this virus, lockdown is just to mitigate the effects on the NHS. I was called an idiot on my local Facebook site for expressing this and told we should get the army in and start arresting people ‘like me’ 🙁

Frompcat · 25/04/2020 18:55

More what people are thinking when they visit their parents, hence the question.

I mean probably that they are adults who can make their own choices?

midgebabe · 25/04/2020 18:55

You might sign to say you refuse all treatment if you get ill, but by going out early you force others to stay indoors much longer, because you can't guarantee you won't give the virus to other people

Utterly selfish

CaroleFuckinBaskin · 25/04/2020 18:55

A bit surprised anyone would use the USA as a positive example right now, Christ.

I wasn't using America as a positive example. You asked how people would rebel, I said look at America to see how they are rebelling.

Of course you don't actually have to look at America to see how one might rebel against a lockdown...because common sense would tell you that, um, not adhering to lockdown rules is how one would rebel against a lockdown!

Pastaforall · 25/04/2020 18:55

It’s a tough one. The damage to the economy is already going to be truly awful but then again I don’t fancy catch coronavirus.
I personally would vote for an extension in highly populated areas, London in particular, with them slowly easing restrictions in places less populated, with the hope, over time to open everywhere and not have the NHS completely swamped.

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2020 18:56

Yes and have they thought about the increased risk to their parents. It’s a simple question.

AlternativePerspective · 25/04/2020 18:56

So, people are now advocating for herd immunity? Even though they were shouting down the government a few weeks ago for suggesting it?
