To ask whether you would support a further lockdown?

Posting here simply as I don't know if voting can be enabled outside AIBU.

Vote yes- You would support further lockdown of this extent
Vote no- You would not support a lockdown of this extent after the current lockdown period

Personally, I would be happy for restrictions to slowly be lifted after this. Amongst my friends, I feel I am in the majority.

*I support the current restrictions for as long as they are necessary. I've seen the mathematical models that suggest the peak will be followed by a "long tail" and an early end to restrictions would lead to a rapid rise in cases.

This is a marathon not a sprint*

I've seen articles along those lines, too, @safariboot. If lockdown is eased or lifted altogether too soon, it could all have been for nothing and we could be back almost at square one.

I'd rather have lockdown for longer than have it twice.

LakieLady · 26/04/2020 13:12

@Bathroom12345, if the number of builder's merchants making deliveries is anything to go by, your builder is having you on! Bricks, sand, gravel and enough timber to build a galleon have all been delivered in the last 3-4 weeks. (I don't spend all day gawping out of my window, honest, it's hard to miss, as anything bigger than a Transit blocks the road and then all the supermarket and other delivery vans have to turn around).

Screwfix are still kind of open too, my niece has a p/t job there. They're only doing click and collect, and at her branch, you have set 2-hour collection period.

LakieLady · 26/04/2020 13:18

You can isolate all you like but if others don't isolate then its pretty pointless unless you can guarantee you will not need to have any deliveries, tradesmen, family contact

Or see a doctor, dentist or other health professional, which would involve venturing out among people who may be carrying the virus but be blissfully unaware because they are asymptomatic.

sourcreamnchives · 26/04/2020 13:20

God no

We’re going to have it twice, maybe more, regardless.

66redballons · 26/04/2020 13:30

Depends, what are the reasons ? To slow the virus or protect the NHS?
Invest in the bloody NHS, stop selling off its property, let people train for free instead of getting themselves into debt to take bloody care of people in society.

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 13:31

Laurie yes, we’ll have it twice.

missfliss · 26/04/2020 13:33

@LakieLady
Builders merchants have been prioritising large infrastructure projects this past 3-4 weeks. For small domestic builders materials have and will continue to be a problem for some time.
British Gypsum have only just began manufacturing again and so plaster is really hard to come by.

ClientQ · 26/04/2020 13:38

@Coffeeandbeans that's the tricky part - I'm vulnerable but need to earn money, I'm not sure how that's going to look Sad unless they extend furlough for shielding people

ClientQ · 26/04/2020 13:39

To add I'm currently shielding. If there is no further financial support/choices regarding work I'll have to go back to work when we open and socially distance. Realistically I'll go to work and come home, carry on food shopping online and not socialise. That's about all I can do

GabsAlot · 26/04/2020 13:57

people moaning sham we're not france or spain totoal lockdown for about a month but people here wouldnt accept it would they

Cantata · 26/04/2020 14:02

@MargotB7 I was nearly thicker than you, as I thought you were repeating your question until I re-read your second post. Grin

ChipotleBlessing · 26/04/2020 14:03

@MargotB7 You know your dad is well past the infectious stage and it would be safe for you to go and see him?

LakieLady · 26/04/2020 14:06

*I don't care about shops and leisure facilities, I just want to be able to go for a walk with a friend

My neighbour goes for a walk with her friend. Friend turns up and rings neighbour, when neighbour comes out of her front door, her friend starts walking towards the fields that lead to the woods. They stay 2m apart, one behind the other, until they get into the field, when they can walk side by side, but still 2m apart.

They're still close enough to chat, and have to resort to single file when it comes to gates and stiles, but they both carry hand sanitiser which they use before and after each gate/stile. Neighbour told me that the only problems they've had are with families who walk 4 or 5 abreast and don't fall into single file, but expect them to leap into the undergrowth to maintain safe distance, even where the path is over 2m wide.

She concedes that it won't be possible if we get very wet weather, as the footpaths will be very muddy and there won't be a wide enough passable strip for people to pass each other safely.

Would this work for you and your friend, @hammeringinmyhead? I realise you both might have to drive separately to somewhere you can walk, not everyone has countryside on their doorstep.

Hermanhessescat · 26/04/2020 14:06

I think the government should actually come out and respond to these increasing demands for a relaxation of lockdown. As far as they can, explain what we can anticipate in terms of deaths and numbers infected if it’s relaxed, respond to claims that more will die from the financial and psychological effects of lockdown etc. They are obviously working in tandem with epidemiologists and statisticians so presumably well informed about the situation. The more people discuss breaking lockdown the more it will happen so maybe some decisive action from those in charge with all the available info will quash social media clamouring for lockdown to be lifted.
Sadly I suspect that tories being tories and dom Cummings being in charge they are quite happy for all this rumour mongering going on as ultimately they can use this seeming groundswell change in public opinion to do what they wanted anyway and get people back to work.

Spied · 26/04/2020 14:07

I'd happily lockdown for longer if that's what's needed.
My keyworker role means I have to go to work..also the supermarket for myself and older parents..
I wish I could not leave the house ever until this virus has gone. I'm terrified.

CalDani · 26/04/2020 14:09

As somebody who knows a shop worker in intensive care with Covid, she could only have caught it from the utter idiot customers ignoring social distancing, I support another lockdown.
What a selfish nation we have become if drinking yourself silly at pubs, buying unessential crap or visiting boyfriends is more important than trying to save thousands of lives.
People need to get a grip.
Who knows if lockdown is the right thing to do, but we have started it now so we need to give it a good chance to work.

DaisyDreaming · 26/04/2020 14:11

I want a harsher lockdown like spain/Italy/france. The death rate is still too high and too many people are flaunting it

AmelieTaylor · 26/04/2020 14:11

@CalDani

Well said!!

MadameTuffington · 26/04/2020 14:20

@lola777 if’s it’s done gradually then yes - I do still think that older people and vulnerable people should be protected, I think the young and healthy should be encouraged to do as much as possible (I work in a care home and recent events has really brought out the best in our 18-30 staff cohort - they have been bloody outstanding and earned maximum respect). I think there should be a part time, rotational return to school for all kids - anything else, I don’t feel I’m qualified to comment on.

I am pretty certain I have just had Covid - there has been a significant outbreak in our home - we have gold standard infection control procedures and the building is well maintained and spotless but it has ripped through our staff and our residents. I live in a small rural town in the South West with low infection rates.

No one should be complacent but we do need to move forward for the sake of everyone’s mental and physical wellbeing, UK business and our economy.

FFS read the thread. This is not what people are talking about.

We can't have any sensible, useful debate if people aren't prepared to listen and absorb other's points.

Firecarrier · 26/04/2020 14:26

Haven't RTT

Your voting system doesn't make sense...

I wouldn't support another lockdown - I don't even support this one as I think the cons seriously outweigh the pros eg economy etc even though my family are absolutely loving lockdown so from a purely personal and selfish point of view I couldn't care less!

Chillicheese123 · 26/04/2020 14:27

@CalDani bit of a sweeping statement there. Shop worker could have caught it from a member of her own family. I’m sure no one ‘gave’ it her on purpose though.

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 14:33

CalDani "she could only have caught it from the utter idiot customers ignoring social distancing, I support another lockdown"

so you're 100% sure she didn't come into contact with anyone apart from customers?
