Posting here simply as I don't know if voting can be enabled outside AIBU.

Vote yes- You would support further lockdown of this extent
Vote no- You would not support a lockdown of this extent after the current lockdown period

Personally, I would be happy for restrictions to slowly be lifted after this. Amongst my friends, I feel I am in the majority.

I am not finding this lockdown difficult. I would be happy to stay at home to allow others who need to go out to work to do so.

Rebelwithallthecause · 25/04/2020 20:34

I guess I’d support it but I don’t want it and believe restrictions should allow the family ‘bubble’ that the Scottish are talking about

Thisdressneedspockets · 25/04/2020 20:34

Only if they show us very clear evidence that supports it.
And offer a plan for starting to get out of it.
And show that they're not just moving a second peak into the winter months.

Iusedtobecarmen · 25/04/2020 20:35

Sorry bit mumbo jumbo
No glasses on!

2beautifulbabs · 25/04/2020 20:35

No I won't support a further lockdown either

We all need to keep certain measures in place such as social distancing in supermarkets no large gatherings no concerts both indoor and outdoor I also sadly think that cinemas pubs and some restaurants would still need to remain closed.
But I also believe that we should be allowed to visit immediate family, allowed to go back to exercising more than once a day but again maintaining social distance.
Should be able to go outside your front door more than once without fear that your neighbours are going to report you.
This virus isn't going anywhere they have already said time and time again they can't stop us getting it there is also speculation that those of us who have had the virus aren't safe from getting it again and again.
The vaccine could be months or even years away.
This lockdown was about helping the NHS cope not stopping us from getting it altogether.

I think the most people will manage is another two weeks and then everyone will start to do what they want to do it already slowly happening now

1forsorrow · 25/04/2020 20:36

I would start to allow things to open I think garden centres for plant seeds sales could be open by next weekend I know B&Q are opening some stores, does anyone know if you can buy gardening stuff or is just open for hardware stuff.

TigerJoy · 25/04/2020 20:37

I'm really struggling with this.

I think we should be cautious BUT my mental health is really starting to suffer. I haven't seen my family for more than 2 months now. I have been crying repeatedly today. I really don't know how much more I can take.

I would really like it if I could see some friends or family. Even if I could only see 1 friend and my parents it would really make a difference

StormBaby · 25/04/2020 20:37

I think another three weeks on the end of this current period would do the trick

blue25 · 25/04/2020 20:37

Yes definitely. Happy to do whatever is needed to protect the vulnerable.

TigerJoy · 25/04/2020 20:39

Even if it was at 2m distance! I'd love to be able to sit in the garden and chat with someone else.

XingMing · 25/04/2020 20:40

While I sympathize with everyone who needs a degree of shielding for health reasons, we also need to keep the economy going if for no reason apart from that it is our taxed earnings paying for the health care services that fund healthcare. The public sector can only exist as long as tax payers pay tax. If you just take the taxpayers' money, it will run out. And if you don't put anything back into the pot, then patience and sympathy will diminish. In times of prosperity, most of it can be funded. In hardship, hard questions.

SmellMySmellbow · 25/04/2020 20:43

I support it for as long as is deemed necessary for us to get antibody tests, a vaccine or good treatment, eg plasma. Lots of people saying "we need to learn to live with it", if I knew I'd live then that'd be OK - I don't want to die with it, that's my main concern!

SmellMySmellbow · 25/04/2020 20:44

And that's just at my base level of fear. I don't want anyone to die of it of course, but fear for me and my loved ones is what consumes me the most immediately.

Viviennemary · 25/04/2020 20:44

If 250,000 upper class twits hadn't gone to some event that might have improved things. Same goes for some Spanish football match. No testing at airports and planeloads of folk streaming in from CV hotspots

XingMing · 25/04/2020 20:45

So, as soon as it is feasible, we need to get back to work. Work = taxes = public sector spends. Simple, but harsh.

LaurieMarlow · 25/04/2020 20:45

I don't want to die with it, that's my main concern!

You’ll need a health service too though. And that needs to be funded somehow.

LaurieMarlow · 25/04/2020 20:46

Work = taxes = public sector spends

It is extraordinary how many people don’t seem to understand this.

TheRoyallingStones · 25/04/2020 20:46

I’m really struggling in lockdown as I live alone. But am also lucky that I still have a full time job that I can do from home, plenty of food in the house, etc I know that. But it’s still bloody hard!

But I really don’t see how there can be significant lifting of lockdown yet. Perhaps some minor tweaks to keep the masses happy without increasing the risk too much, but nothing like “lifting” of lockdown.

yossell · 25/04/2020 20:47

You shouldn't deal with people flouting the restrictions by ordering more draconian restrictions -- rather, there needs to be clarity about what the restrictions are, and those restrictions need to be enforced. What we don't need are the police getting together for a clap-along on Westminster Bridge.

Personally, I'm going to have a real problem financially if the economy doesn't start moving again in the not too distant future. I'm sure there are a lot of people worse off than me. It's possible for me to do a number of aspects of my job remotely, but because of the lockdown, I can't even do that. I think there's a real dearth of imagination and leadership to implement ways in which we can begin to do our jobs again, while continuing with a certain amount of social distancing. The idea that we either all never leave our houses again, or that we allow the virus to run rampant through our country is, I think, a false dichotomy.

cabbageking · 25/04/2020 20:48

I don't want to die yet or to see more of my family die. Even though they followed lock down rules.

We are talking life or death here. The more that ignore the lock down the longer it will continue and more will die.

We have no plans to open until June at the earliest whilst people ignore lock down.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/04/2020 20:48

The reality is that as this thing travels around the globe, we can expect second and probably third waves. The second may be worse than the first.

For my sins I’m re-reading Laura Spinney’s ‘Pale Rider - a history of the Spanish flu’, written about 3-4 years ago. It’s very striking how, even though 100 years have passed, our basic measures for dealing with this have not changed at all.

neveradullmoment99 · 25/04/2020 20:50

@TigerJoy - are you shielding? I have had to go to my mums with food. I take shopping to her. I put it on her doorstep. She comes to collect it I stay outside in her garden and have a quick chat then I go home. I feel at least she sees someone even although its at a distance and it isn't for long.

neveradullmoment99 · 25/04/2020 20:51

Just to note, I stay more than the 2 metres from her.

Findingapath · 25/04/2020 20:51

There is no point releasing lockdown until it is under control...or inevitably we will just end up with a second phase of lockdown, and an even bigger second wave of cases. The level of virus still circulating is significantly higher than it was at the start of this lockdown.

NoisyTwats · 25/04/2020 20:52

None of my neighbours are following the lockdown now so I don't see the point in extending it.
