Posting here simply as I don't know if voting can be enabled outside AIBU.

Vote yes- You would support further lockdown of this extent
Vote no- You would not support a lockdown of this extent after the current lockdown period

Personally, I would be happy for restrictions to slowly be lifted after this. Amongst my friends, I feel I am in the majority.

I won’t vote as though I want lockdown to end, I ultimately want these difficult decisions to be made by people better informed than me

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 25/04/2020 20:05

Loosening lockdown because people are bored/want to see their parents/grandchildren/boyfriend isn't the right thing to do

That isnt the really the reason for easing lockdown though is it?- the reason is that the country simply doesnt have the money for extended lockdown for months and months. If we dont have the money, we dont have the money. Thats it. The NHS doesnt get funded by a magic money tree- its from our taxes.

Worriedmum54321 · 25/04/2020 20:05

Lockdown was applied far too late, as a result we are probably going to have 50000 deaths in total or thereabouts (already over 40000 estimated). If this useless government had done its job we could have had an earlier more effective lockdown or controlled it via testing and tracing. Now we have the worst of all worlds.
What on earth is Dominic Cummings doing on a scientific expert committee. I have zero trust in this government.
Anyway, given the 3 week lag , community transmission will be pretty low by now. If we have the capacity to test and trace, lockdown can be safely wound down, gradually

GoofyLuce · 25/04/2020 20:06

@NikeDeLaSwoosh

Stop speaking about obese people. Like they don't have feelings you pathetic idiot.

Kazzyhoward · 25/04/2020 20:06

People vulnerable to cold might be safe, but another part of the population is the very opposite of "safe"- what about them? do they not matter? (I'm talking about vulnerable children, those in abusive homes, those not getting cancer screenings, those in dire poverty). I guess they arent as important eh?

The NHS could restart essential treatments/screenings etc without the entire country being released out of lockdown. You don't need everyone back to work, school, etc., for the hospitals to restart cancer treatments!

nuitdesetoiles · 25/04/2020 20:07

Absolutely no to further lockdown...gradual easing of restrictions with primary schools going back first even if only part time and the country back to work. The lockdown if prolonged will be what destroys this country, not covid.

lockedinfornow · 25/04/2020 20:07

No, i would support social distancing to continue and certain restrictions but not this lockdown any longer. We need to start getting back to a bit of normality.

DelphicOracle · 25/04/2020 20:08

What do you mean - “will you support it ?” ... it’s very simple - if people don’t then the restrictions will be more harsh .... it’s not up to you whether you will or not - you will simply have no choice !

LolaSkoda · 25/04/2020 20:09

Thanks @thegreenlight!

Echobelly · 25/04/2020 20:10

This level of lockdown I think does have to continue until there is at least a reasonable tracking and testing capacity, which is not yet. Cases are falling, which is great, but I suspect there will be a surge unless any reopening is accompanied with greater testing and capacity to track people.

IvinghoeBeacon · 25/04/2020 20:10

No delphicoracle, we don’t have lockdown because the general population were too naughty and needed to be taught a lesson, much as I’m sure the govt are pleased you have understood it that way. And you can not support the principle of something but still comply with it. We are still allowed to question decision-making

CherryPavlova · 25/04/2020 20:10

Yes to further hard lockdown until we can instigate effect testing and tracking.

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 25/04/2020 20:11

Put funding & physical help into helping those struggling

Again, who is going to pay for this?

People seem to forget that the government has no money of its own, it just takes it from us.

LilacTree1 · 25/04/2020 20:11

Cherry and if it turns out there’s no immunity and no vaccine?

thegreenlight · 25/04/2020 20:13

LolaSkoda try More or Less: behind the stats and look for their episodes on coronavirus (comparing countries the risk to NHS staff and birdsong, mitigation or suppression: what’s best to fight coronavirus and a few others) as a starting point.

Amboseli · 25/04/2020 20:14

Haven't read the full thread but I would not support a further lockdown. We can't stay on lockdown until there's a vaccine. It seems as if we're passing the peak and the NHS is coping.

Social distancing needs to continue but a managed relaxing of restrictions needs to start, businesses need to adapt to the new world order and implement measures for safe working, all doable with forethought and planning.

AmelieTaylor · 25/04/2020 20:15

@Frompcat

And how long do you propose it should continue?

Until there IS plentiful high quality PPE for ALL NHS & care workers and VGQ PPE for other people who need it to do their jobs safely (public transport employees/supermarket staff/teachers/anyone)

Until the R is

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 25/04/2020 20:15

Agreed @thegreenlight

The stats on the actual risk to NHS workers were quite illuminating.

Viviennemary · 25/04/2020 20:15

I'm absolutely sick of it already. I would obey a further lockdown but grudgingly. I agree we are going to have to learn to live with it. This lockdown is unsustainable IMHO. Reasons economy and people's health suffering eg cancer patients.

Molliemoo10 · 25/04/2020 20:15

Absolutely no to further lockdown...gradual easing of restrictions with primary schools going back first

Do you have primary aged children?
TBH I would be terrified of sending my DC back to school right now even with half classes etc.

EricaNernie · 25/04/2020 20:16

I go to work anyway, i walk my dog.
so cannot judge since i am less affected than some.

Nottherealslimshady · 25/04/2020 20:16

I'd rather stay in lockdown longer. I dont think the numbers are low enough yet. I miss my mum though and my SIL although we dont see them much anyway. I do not miss work.

PamwichShilling · 25/04/2020 20:16

No I would not want an extension to the current lockdown but I do support some social distancing measures and restrictions. I think working from home if possible is sensible, distancing in shops etc and no public gatherings. I think people need to be able to see close family/partners for the sake of their mental health.

Daffodil101 · 25/04/2020 20:17

One further three week period with guarantees that schools will go back at Whit (not after, we really don’t need a Fortnight holiday) provided we comply and figures Continue to drop.

Open shops with distancing, face masks and longer hours to compensate. Especially clothes and shoe shops and bloody John Lewis!

Allow people to see family.

Vulnerable to stay home for now.

Chillicheese123 · 25/04/2020 20:17

@AmelieTaylor you want people with a headache and a cough to be admitted to hospital ? To what end ?
