DD punched a wall and is now in agony and can’t move her pinkie, will A&E see her?

Had a row with her BF on phone and unfortunately punched a concrete wall not considering consequences. Is now in agony, can’t move her pinky finger and her hand is visibly not right. Ordinarily would take her down straight away but the hospital is a major city university hospital and I imagine (Well, also know based on what I’ve heard through social media) swamped with CV. The walk-in minor injuries centre near us is also now focused on CV and telling people not to come in and only go to A&E if it is life threatening, which DD’s situation isn’t. Otherwise they seem to just want you to suck it up. Don’t want to unnecessarily risk exposing her or our family to CV, especially if A&E won’t see her for the hand injury. She is 17 so I’d only be dropping her off as I doubt they’d let me in. Really I want to take her but DH is against it as is terrified of CV and wants me to look up how to treat it at home.

What advice did 111 give?

ChicChicChicChiclana · 25/04/2020 05:37

Most A and E departments are very quiet at the moment. Of course they will see her.

riannonmas · 25/04/2020 05:37

Tried to call 111 but got put in a queue

My understanding is that all A and Es have been set up to keep covid patients and others separate. Also separate staff working each area

And that the non covid parts are quiet so you are seen quickly. I would take her and wait in the car. Take handsanitiser etc too.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 25/04/2020 05:38

After you've got her injured hand sorted out she's going to have to think about anger management too.

Namechangerextraordinaire22 · 25/04/2020 05:39

Take her, they will see her.

I’d get back in the queue - 111 will direct you to the best place to take your daughter.

SushiGo · 25/04/2020 05:42

You can't treat a broken hand at home. Take her in.

ditavonteesed · 25/04/2020 05:47

Of course they will see her. Take her in.

Voxx · 25/04/2020 05:49

Yes. She needs to be seen. Take her. The staff will take all sensible precautions. A broken finger/damage to hand cannot be treated effectively at home and there is a risk of permanent damage.

Purpleartichoke · 25/04/2020 05:53

Her hand could be seriously damaged. They don’t mean suck it up when the injury could mean life long dysfunction.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/04/2020 06:03

Yeah, take her in. Sounds like she's broken something, and even though it''s "only a pinkie" that can have quite serious effects on her hand's abilities.

Hellohello2020 · 25/04/2020 06:07

Go, typical mechanism for 5th metacarpal fracture (the bone the pinkie attaches to) and surprisingly common in young people.

AnnaMagnani · 25/04/2020 06:14

A+E is quiet, especially for non-COVID things.

And she isn't even in a risk group. She needs to go - she'll have her hand her whole life.

Our local hospital which was at the centre of the outbreak is announcing to us it's passed the peak. People need to turn up and deal with their health.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 25/04/2020 06:16

I fell and essentially punched the floor.

Displaced fracture of the 5th metacarpal head, I was in surgery within a few hours of entering the hospital having a screw put in, then 6 months of physio to get my ring finger and little finger to move properly.

Definitely take her in for an X-ray.

Bringringbring12 · 25/04/2020 06:16

It sunk be tumbleweed op
Seriously
Go and then report back so others know too

puguin86 · 25/04/2020 06:17

Take her to A&E actually quite quiet !!

Bringringbring12 · 25/04/2020 06:17

Sorry typo

It will be tumbleweed

Really OP. It will be very very quiet.

rayoflightboy · 25/04/2020 06:18

Unless you have x-ray equipment and a Dr in your home, you need to bring her to a&e.You don't know what damage has been done. And your DH is an idiot.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 25/04/2020 06:22

Here you go - boxers fracture, very common and describes the injury

riannonmas · 25/04/2020 06:22

Right, she’s still in a lot of pain but managed to hop in the shower. Have told her I’m taking her and she’s just throwing on some clothes.

DH not happy and is going on about how we’ll be “laughed out of the department”.

Thank you for the assurance everyone

They will see you, A&Es are split into two sides at the moment, covid and non covid do you’ll be fine, don’t worry.

Runkle · 25/04/2020 06:27

Why is everyone losing their common sense? Hmm Ring 111 they will give best advice about where to go and procedure before you enter. Better than rocking up there.

ScissorsBike · 25/04/2020 06:29

Glad you're taking her in, poor poppet

chatterbugmegastar · 25/04/2020 06:30

Let us know how she is Thanks
